Graspop Metal Meeting 2017: Day Two
After one hell of an opening day and a second night of camping, those attending this year's edition of the Graspop Metal Meeting festival had by now settled into the routine and were ready for another day. Once again, the day promised a mix of legendary names, young blood and cult favourites (or perhaps in the case of one Norwegian act, that should be "kvlt" favourites.)
Following a delay and miscomunication, I was unfortunately unable to catch Axel Rudi Pell and so my second full day at Graspop opened with a trip to Main Stage 2, which was being graced by Devildriver. Though they're not the biggest metal band of recent memory, performing at ten past one in the afternoon was something of a surprise. This did not deter the group from playing with full force and intensity and getting so many rockers' Saturday off to a great start. Frontman Dez Fafara was able to interact very well with the crowd and the high energy the group displayed at the very least impressed those in the audience who are not fans of Devildriver and delighted those who came to see them intentionally. Mayhem To Use Euronymous Hologram
In recent years, it's becoming increasingly (and frighteningly) common for dead musicians to be brought back to the stage using holographic technology, with the likes of Michael Jackson, Tupac Shakur, Elvis Presley and even Ronnie James Dio all being seen by live audiences again. While the use of these projections a great deal of debate and controversy, mostly owing to the ethics of using the likenesses of musicians who died before they could give any consent to such use of their image and the argument that the holograms cheapen both the memories of the musicians and the live experience overall, it is nevertheless becoming a more common sight. It has now been revealed that the latest band to use the technology will be Norwegian black metal legends, Mayhem, who will use it to recreate the image of deceased guitarist Øystein "Euronymous" Aarseth.
Mayhem will be hitting the road this year to perform their classic debut full length, "De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas" in full and to mark the occassion, the group has teamed up with Eyellusion, who worked on the Ronnie James Dio hologram to bring back Euronymous and give fans who never got the chance to see him in person the opportunity to do so. No word has been given yet on whether his image will be used for one song or for the whole performance, but it's sure to be a decision which is divisive among fans.
Aarseth was infamously killed in 1993 at the hands of Burzum mastermind and former bandmate, Varg Vikernes, who performed bass on the "De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas" record. He was given the maximum Norwegian prison sentence of 21 years, but released in 2009. More...
Mayhem Gearing Up For Spring Tour
The Norwegian black metal icons from Mayhem are commemorating the release of their 1994 landmark "De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas" full-length with a worldwide live takeover performing the monumental record in its entirety.
The band recently wrapped up the "Purgatorium Americæ Septentrionalis MMXVII" tour with support from Black Anvil and Inquisition and will return to the road for a near-month-long European jaunt in just a handful of days.
Set to commence on March 24th in Karlstad, Sweden and run through April 16th in Munich, Germany, this European leg of the tour includes stops at the Vienna Metal Meeting and Dark Easter Metal Meeting. Support will be provided by Dragged Into Sunlight on select dates. See all confirmed dates below.
"Mayhem brings 'De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas' to Europe once again," comments the band. "After hugely successful tours in South and North America, several festival shows, as well as a short tour in France, Netherlands, and Poland last year, the band now embark on a longer European run. In addition to main support Dragged Into Sunlight, who will be present for most of the shows, other local supports have been specially selected to ensure the right atmosphere." More...
New Bands Added To Brutal Assault 2017
A bunch of new bands have been announced for the 22nd edition of Brutal Assault, which takes place this year in Fortress Josefov near Jaromer in the Czech Republic on August 9-12. Returning once more are heavy-weights Hatebreed, who last graced the fortress stages in 2012 and 2013. This is reportedly in response to festival-goers requests for more hardcore in the line-up.
The Dillinger Escape Plan will be including the festival in their series of farewell dates. It looks like the band's appearance here won't be affected by the bus crash that caused some European tour dates to be cancelled last month. Dillinger last played Brutal Assault in 2015.
Thrash veterans Overkill, touring in support of their recently released 18th studio album, "The Grinding Wheel", have also been added. No stranger to the fortress stage, Overkill last appeared at the festival in 2013.
Helsinki's Wintersun are newcomers to Brutal Assault, appearing for the first time. Can we assume they will be playing material from their long-awaited third album? There's no official word as yet. More...

"The first time I heard from Mayhem was in '91-'92 when I received a letter from Euronymous. I did not know that letter was gonna change my whole life... Of course I said yes to their offer and in 1993 we recorded the album called 'De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas' one of the most magical recordings of all time. More...
