Background
Metallica was first formed by Lars Ulrich, James Hetfield, and future Megadeth member Dave Mustaine and Ron McGovney. They first played in L.A., but later found themselves at home playing in the San Francisco Bay area. The band later replaced Ron with Cliff Burton and Dave with Kirk Hammet as late as 1983.
On September 27, 1986, on the European leg of the Master of Puppets tour, Cliff Burton was killed in a bus accident in Sweden en route to their next show's location. Tragic as this event was, Metallica continued on and Cliff was replaced by Jason Newsted, who remained part of the band until 2001, when he finally annouced he would leave Metallica because of the damage he had done to his body touring and headbanging for fourteen years.
More than any other band, Metallica and their albums have been the yardstick with which to measure other heavy metal releases. Metallica practically defines "heavy metal" as a sub-genre of metal itself, although their music ranges from NWOBHM to Thrash in their earlier days. However, in the 1990s and beyond 2000, Metallica evolved a more mainstream sound, which helped them become a household name and the seventh biggest selling act in history.

James Hetfield To Play Cop In New Ted Bundy Film

Metallica frontman James Hetfield will have a role in the forthcoming movie ‘Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil, And Vile‘. Joe Berlinger, who also co-directed the Metallica documentary ‘Metallica: Some Kind of Monster‘, is helming the production. It stars Zac Efron as serial killer Ted Bundy and Lily Collins as his girlfriend Elizabeth Kleopfer. Bundy was executed in the electric chair at Florida State Prison on January 24, 1989, having confessed to dozens of murders, rapes and kidnappings.
Hetfield will enact Officer Bob Hayward. The following description was offered of Hayward‘s character: “He's a no-nonsense Utah highway patrol veteran who was the first law enforcement officer to arrest Bundy in 1975 after pulling the killer over and discovering burglary tools in his car but wisely suspecting much worse.”

Dave Mustaine Suggests Touring As "The Big Three"

With Slayer calling it quits after one final world tour, Megadeth mainman Dave Mustaine lately expressed his hopes that "The Big Four" (Metallica, Slayer, Megadeth and Anthrax) would perform at least one more show before they officially become "The Big Three".
In a recent interview Mustaine further spoke of the potential for a few more shows from the "Big Four" and the possibility that they do it without Metallica, who appear to be the holdout. Says Mustaine:
"I think if you asked the three of us that, our camps would probably say yes. If Anthrax, Slayer and Megadeth all want to do it, and Metallica doesn’t, then what do we do? The Big Three? I’m sure that a lot of people would like to see that, and that may be what it is. You know, you may end up having it be the Big Three plus No. 5 if we have Exodus play with it. But it’s not about just doing concerts for the sake of concerts. It was about the movement. It was about what we did together as a group.
Excluding Anthrax, we’re all like neighbors almost ’cause we all lived so close. It was just a half hour to an hour at at most between each other’s houses on the freeway. So, I think it would be great to do more "Big Four" stuff - do one in Japan. Do one in South America - we never did one in South America; we haven’t done one in Asia. Give the people an opportunity to see it before it goes away forever."

Mustaine's Vision With Megadeth: Destroy Metallica

When asked by a fan on Twitter what his measure of success and vision was when starting Megadeth, he answered:
“My measure of success was if I ate that day or not, and my vision was destroy @Metallica and stop living in a van. Good thing I got over my animosity for leaving the band. I’m glad we reconciled… where’s the Big 4 shows???””
Mustaine was ejected from Metallica in the early 80s for his drug abuse. Mustaine and Metallica reconciled back in 2004.

Gibson Sues Funko For Usage Of Their Guitar Design
Gibson Brands Inc. have filed a suit against Funko over its usage of Gibson like designed guitars with their vinyl figures for various rock and metal artists. Gibson sued Funko earlier this month in California federal court, arguing that it owns the trademark for the Les Paul guitar, including the use of its likeness in toys, and that the pop culture toy company didn't seek permission for its wildly popular vinyl figures to hold Gibson-design guitars. Funko has released figures of current and former Gibson endorsed musicians, including members of Metallica, Guns N’ Roses and Kiss.

Gibson Brands Inc. claims that the suit follows an unsuccesful attempt to initiate a retroactive licensing deal for the usage of their guitar designs with the vinyl figures.

Thrashback Thursday: Trapped Under Ice
Over the past few weeks, the Thrashback Thursday column hasn't quite lived up to its name by featuring grindcore songs, namely; Napalm Death's, "Suffer The Children" and Brutal Truth's, "Sugardaddy," with the proto-black metal staple, "Satanic Rites" by Hellhammer being featured the week before. While it's been made clear from the start that this column won't focus solely on thrash metal, this week we'll be heading back to the eighties to take a look at a song from thrash metal's biggest band, Metallica and the song, "Trapped Under Ice" from their beloved album, "Ride The Lightning."
"Ride The Lightning" was Metallica's sophomore full length album, being released a year after their debut, "Kill 'em All" and brought a lot more melody to Metallica's sound than previously heard, perhaps most notably on, "Fade To Black" and the instrumental closer, "Call of Ktulu." However, there was plenty of heaviness still on offer, including the twisting riffs of Metallica classic, "For Whom The Bell Tolls," the sharp shocks of opener, "Fight Fire With Fire" and the Moses biopic, "Creeping Death."
However, the track we'll be examining this week, "Trapped Under Ice," showcases everything that was great about Metallica in their prime. On the album, the song brings listeners right back to frantic energy after the preceding number, "Fade To Black" and displays a sound which is all about speed, opening with a guitar intro and breaking into a wild riff, it's reminiscent of wild horses and motor racing less than 30 seconds into the song. There isn't much in the way of vocal melody, which is actually a plus when delivering the panic stricken and paranoid lyrics, however there's still enough to create a catchy, if brief, chourus. "Trapped Under Ice" is arguably one of the more overlooked songs on this classic album, but it's a perfect snapshot of the young thrash metal genre, showcasing a youthful energy and passion which would make the sub-genre such a success and by extension, why Metallica would become thrash's biggest ambassadors, at least for the decade.
