"Warfield’s latest, “With The Old Breed,” is a declaration that they can keep up with the original wave of thrash metal and leave their own mark on the genre as a whole."

If you’ve ever read any of my reviews from any of the metal blogs I currently write for, I gravitate towards thrash bands a lot. I grew up moshing during the late 80’s to the likes of the American Big Four, the German Big Four and everything in between. Warfield is one of many bands included in the new wave of thrash metal and they’ve assimilated quite nicely within the genre. Warfield’s latest, “With The Old Breed,” is a declaration that they can keep up with the original wave of thrash metal and leave their own mark on the genre as a whole.

I definitely get an early Destruction and early Kreator vibe throughout the whole album. That’s not a bad thing, it’s more of a hat’s off to their OG influencers. Some of the riffing reminds me of Xentrix at times and the gang style backup vocals ala early Vio-lence. The production is quite punchy too, which is what you would expect from a modern thrash metal album. The low end was causing the fruit basket on my table to start moving, like it wanted to create a circle pit of bananas, apples and oranges.

There are eleven tracks on this beast with one of them being a cover of Nuclear Assault’s “F# (Wake Up).” I liked the whole album and there are some songs that caught my ear more. “Fragmentation” has this jump into the pit groove from the get-go and it really never lets up. It has those gang style backup vocals that I love and wish were more prevalent in modern thrash metal. There’s a cool breakdown right after the solo that will probably go over really well when played live. The tune concludes with a slower groove in order for you to jump out of the pit with a reduced heart rate.

Another track worth mentioning is “Soul Conqueror.” It’s face-ripping fast and has that classic German thrash sound we’ve all come to love. There’s even a death grunt mixed in for good measure! Like I mentioned early on in the review, Warfield covers the legendary Nuclear Assault and their homage did it justice. I wish more of the newer wave of thrash bands would do the same.

Now that I’ve become a little acquainted with Warfield, I’ll have to dig into their earlier catalog. That’s saying a lot from someone that’s been a superfan of the genre since some random band started trading a cassette demo called “No Life ‘Til Leather” a few decades ago. Give ear to “With The Old Breed,” your neck will hate you later.

Highs: Warfield plays with the intensity you expect from a German thrash band.

Lows: The album is just pure thrash without a lot of variety. But that's not a bad thing right?

Bottom line: Give ear to “With The Old Breed,” your neck will hate you later.
