"If you're just after some brutality and aggression, you'll find it on 'Kill.Bury.Repeat' and you'll be happy with it."

When it comes to death metal, there are almost as many sub-genres as there are of metal itself. One of the most common nowadays is brutal death metal, pioneered by the likes of Suffocation and Cannibal Corpse and known for its relentlessly punishing sound and often grizzly lyrics. It should come as no surprise then that a band by the name of Torn The Fuck Apart features plenty of gore and bloodshed, with a devastating blend of brutal and technical metal.

Five years on from their last album, "A Genetic Predisposition For Violence," Torn The Fuck Apart unleash their fifth album, "Kill.Bury.Repeat," and the title really does sum up the record perfectly. Everything fans of the sub-genre could want is present here, from the visceral lyrics to pulverising double bass drum works and meaty guitars. The guitars are actually one of the highlights of the record, creating some really cool riffs and passages that carry the album throughout. The chugging guitar work of Michael Langner feels like a chainsaw being revved before it cuts through the bones of the song.

"Kill.Bury.Repeat" starts off very strongly, with some really good parts that drive the songs along nicely. "A Statement Of Malicious Intent" is a good example, gifting the listener with grooves that will hold their attention, which are also present in "Submerged In Human Compost," another highlight of the record. "Stuck In The Trunk" also boasts a wonderful twisting guitar riff to kick things off, which leads into a plodding but malicious track, with a little re-enactment of a hostage in the boot of the car being forced and shouted at to stay put.

Unfortunately, unless you're a hardcore devotee of brutal death metal, it does become repetitive after a while. The final three songs in particular come across as very generic, which isn't helped by the tracks going on for longer than they needed to. "Autopsy Report (Inconclusive)" is noteworthy only for the spoken intro and veers into deathcore territory, while "Scratch The Bone" becomes annoying for its stop-and-start tempo, with pauses just long enough to trick the listener into thinking the song has finished. Closing number "Unleashing The Bloodthirsty" is an improvement on the two songs before, but not enough to really make a bored listener care.

Torn The Fuck Apart has their audience and their style. If you're just after some brutality and aggression, you'll find it on "Kill.Bury.Repeat" and you'll be happy with it. It's not a bad album, but it does run out of steam after a while and doesn't offer much if anything to entice people to stick around. Fans of such bands as The Faceless or Beneath The Massacre will probably get a kick out of this, while metal fans outside of this umbrella won't find a lot to enjoy.

Highs: "A Statment Of Malicious Intent" and "Submerged In Human Compost"

Lows: All songs meld into one after a while, generic at times and some songs last longer than needs be.

Bottom line: A decent brutal death metal album which will please fans, but not many other people.
