The Rockstar Ramblings: Rockin with Dokken

Dokken has released a brand new music video for the single "Empire", taken from the band's 11th studio album 'Broken Bones.’ For serious Dokken fans, there is a DVD, which features a comprehensive "Making of the Album" documentary. This begs the question, are there non-serious Dokken fans?

'Broken Bones' is produced by Dokken front man and namesake, Don Dokken. The new set features a return to the band's classic sound of catchy melodies and is high on production. The current lineup of Dokken is: Don Dokken (vocals), Mick Brown (drums), Jon Levin (guitar) and Sean McNabb (bass). Random Don Dokken quote: "We've never had a #1 hit; we've just kept touring winning fans over one by one." Okay then, onto their latest video:

There is a tattooed girl joined by a badass in big boots entering a door that appears to go nowhere. We quickly find out that it actually leads to a basement that looks suspiciously like the place my friends and I would meet in High School to smoke pot. Just to clarify, the pot we smoked was not Dr. Dre type week, but rather heavily cut with oregano.

The band (Dokken) is playing here. If you take away the arm bands, add a couple of pounds, and add a knit hat you can still see the old Don Dokken (squint and it becomes clearer).

So apparently the girl is a photographer and there is some strange tie-in with satellites. When putting together this song there clearly was an agreement that no guitar solos would be cut, “LEAVE THEM ALL IN DAMMIT!” Overall the band sounds like, well, Dokken. The video itself is fairly bland, especially because of my memories of the basement in High School; of course, the tattooed girl never showed up to take pictures of us. We just smoked our oregano and kept wondering if we were high yet…

I SAW DOKKEN OPEN FOR AEROSMITH AT THE WORCESTER CENTRUM, WORCESTER, MA, IN 1987. THIS WAS THE TOUR IN SUPPORT OF THE "BACK FOR THE ATTACK" ALBUM. GEORGE LYNCH WAS ALWAYS ONE OF MY FAVORITE SHREDDERS, AND DON DOKKEN'S SMOOTH VOCALS WERE A GOOD CONTRAST TO LYNCH'S GARGANTUAN GUITAR TONE.............I MISS THE DOKKEN/ LYNCH PARTNERSHIP, BUT THE NEW ALBUM, "EMPIRE" IS STILL A SOLID EFFORT OVERALL.
