Actually, he has a point Branded. Are any of the bands on the bill worth shelling out that much cash? Oh! That's right, you'd pay 15-20 bucks to see ANY of them with an opener and a local band. Morons like this guy skoff at dropping 20 bucks on a show with 14 bands when we know heavy hitters like Wilco who fly to Europe for a festival and don't drop a tear doing it. Some people's kids...

wow, I never thought I'd be one to advocate spending money on things, when you can get it free, but I guess some people don't see that maybe these bands, who may not be well known, could use some money to help them get their product out...but, alas, there are some whiny a$$es that always need something to complain about or else their day isnt fully enjoyable.....
BG: would you travel from AZ to TX to play a free show after shelling out possibly hundreds of bucks on gas alone to get to and from the show? or would like to get some money to help you with maybe food, a place to stay for the night, or some gas money home? Yes, I am a downloader of music instead of paying $20 for a cd, but sometimes even I will shell out a $20 bill to see bands in a live setting that I dont know that well to help them out with some expenses that come with bands traveling long distances for a gig. It's called showing support!!!
5. writes:
No doubt about it. I'd take the gas money (because at 20 bucks a pop split between 14 bands; a little for gas is all they're gonna get). A better question would be: would you rather see the musicians get up on stage, play the gig and hop on the bus to the next show or watch them grovel for gas and meal money at the merch table, because that's what it comes down to.

Obviously, you have no clue what SXSW actually is. People pay more than $1000 to see sanctioned showcases and can choose from over 1,000 acts. This year alone we will be seeing DevilDriver, Asking Alexandria, Dying Fetus, Amoral, Ancestors, Corrosion of Conformity, Black Tusk, Deafheaven, Early Graves, Impending Doom, Hull, Skrew, A Storm of Light, Fear, OFF!, Junius, Scale The Summit, Therapy?, with a ton more metal bands to be named soon.
In addition, there are several day shows, not affiliated with SXSW, that bring the metal to the kids who can't afford a SXSW conference badge. And guess what? These shows ARE FREE!!! Always!!! With bands who are not a part of the conference proper. It's tradition. Has been for over 25 years.
For some dumbasses to come in and think they are going to get more than a tiny handful of patrons is laughable. Especially when there are already going to be FIVE FREE day shows this year, with much bigger bands than this line-up, and, oh yeah, did I mention that they are all GOING TO BE FREE?!?
No need to insult you personally since you are simply clueless. Wouldn't be fair now, would it?
9. writes:
so, you are saying to hell with giving something back to some bands who have given something to the fans. Well, if people are payng $1,000 then how does $15-$20 make such a huge difference, especially to someone who has already said they will not be attending those specific shows? enjoy the shows you do attend, and let others enjoy theirs witout having to hear the crying of of someone who feels that bands are not deserving of some payment for services rendered. Maybe its not the bands doing at all to begin with. Maybe its the venue you should take it up with. Maybe this specific venue didnt get the big money people to come in and pay the $1000 for a showcased band/bands. maybe the venue its trying to pay its bills so it doesnt go under for having a free show. Maybe they will be able to give out discounted rinks for having a cover charge when other shows are free....It appears all you care about is a free show and cant accept the fact that not every venue will have some free things for your whiny self.

10. writes:
Yep, tried to give you the benefit of the doubt, but you're just another ignorant meathead who has no clue what goes on at SXSW. It's worthless trying to get through the fourteen layers of fat between your ears, so I will simply direct this to the bands playing the bill.
NO ONE WILL BE AT YOUR SHOW!!! Not when there are other FREE SHOWS going on at the same time. With FREE BOOZE and FREE BBQ!!! That's what the day shows are all about.
Enjoy your piss poor turnout and don't let branded there see you ticked off afterwards because he might get all internet tough guy on ya and call you "whiny."
Scary.

13. writes:
Yeah...... there's gonna be some way better free shows than this sh**...... he makes a good point......
SXSW is HUGE though, of course this show will fill up.....
But uh, I had to pay for some of the ones you claim were "free". Crowbar and Helmet was $15 and barely anyone without a wristband got in..... Enslaved and 1349 was $10..... And Metallica was badge only, that was a big deal that year...... so either you're lying or got lucky.....
The free shows are really good promotion for kids, it was always the thing to do in high school on the Saturday of that week......

14. writes:
@Chains: The Helmet show was at the Red 7 three years ago, immediately after the Enslaved/Motorhead/Napalm Death/High On Fire FREE SHOW!!! About 5:00pm and they played later that week as part of SXSW. Helmet also played last year as part of Metal Alliance for a proper showcase.
Enslaved (again) played a daytime free show with 1349 on the east side of town (near the Smoot Inn, I believe) as part of the Scion stage FOR FREE!!! and then went over to Red 7 for an official showcase with 1349, Sabaton, and Goat The Head. Enslaved and 1349 switched places for the latter show.
Crowbar had a very private show three years ago. Sorry you weren't invited. At least you got to see them last year at an official SXSW showcase as part of the Metal Alliance tour.
Metallica absolutely was free. Packed, but free. Again, sorry you didn't know the right people then either.
Just because you don't know about 'em, doesn't mean they didn't happen.

15. writes:
"again, a whiny a$$ crying that the show isnt free.....typical of todays pathetic group of people who demand everything free............"
Hilarious coming from a meathead who openly admits in this very forum to stealing music.
Ignorant and hypocritical. The perfect negative stereotype of a metalhead. What an embarrassment you are to the metal community.

18. writes:
"lifer" definitely just found out about the IP logged script, heh magic beaner/lifer?! the reason i D/L music is because the record companies are ripping off the bands by paying them verylittle of the money they make on record sales, yet i will gladly "pay" to go to a show where the bands get direct payment for playing the show and buy merch as well. you can call me a hypicrit meathead or w/e it doesnt bother me at all.....
20. writes:
I had not thought about it much, but I think Mr. Lifer may have jumped to a conclusion as well to spark this whole flame war off (and didn't exactly make the first comment with any intentions aside from b****ing). Given that there are 14 bands on the bill, I was under the impression that this show would go well into the night (unless there are 2 stages).
Most of the day shows I attended last year started around noon or 1pm and ended around dinner time. Yes, those are free but the night shows are not, so whether you show up at this one at 3 or 6 or 8pm, it will cost the same whether or not folks choose to see free day shows early on. You may be correct in that people will be out at other free shows for the early portion of this show, but I'm not sure the comparison to the free day shows and complaining is entirely warranted.
I'm not yet sure what the "competition" looks like for this night yet. All I know is last year there were generally about 1 or 2 decent day shows each day and a TON of night shows to check out. But the night shows with the big names fill up fast too.
For a night show, this lineup certainly feels a little more on the underground side (which is fine by me). I saw Havok on the MetalSucks day show last year and they blew me away, so I'm looking forward to seeing them play again this year, as well as catching a few others on this bill. They can't all be big shows and we are proud to support the metal underground at SXSW. Despite the lack of big names, this lineup looks to be a night of thrashing good madness.
21. writes:
So my point directly to SXSW Lifer is to maybe not be such a d*** in stating your opinion and people wouldn't be so quick to jump all over your comments. I think you raise a valid concern, but present it as an entitled whiner who knows it all.
We'll (Darren aka Rex_84, and I) be there supporting the MetalSucks show and whatever other metal shows we can make it to. Unfortunately, it's just not possible to make it to them all. But come say hi if you see us - obviously we'll be at this show, but we'll be at many others too.

23. writes:
@deathbringer: Of course you're going to defend this show, you're sponsoring it!! And, yes, I did make an apples-to-apples comparison. There are free shows all day long. As the conference gets closer check Austin Showlist for all of the free shows during SXSW. They happen to go on during the morning, the afternoon, the evening, and late into the night. Sorry you're such a n00b.
As for people thinking I'm a d***, I could give two f***s. The real d***s in this case are Motorbreath Entertainment for attempting to gauge metalheads for $15/$20 a pop when there will be far better shows all week long. Oh, and MetalUndeground for supporting this paid show.
Enjoy hanging out with your unpaid writers, the production guys, and the bands' girlfriends, because no one else with any sense is going to throw down that kind of money.

I support, 100 percent, everything Death Bringer said. This is technically not a day show. $15 is not steep for what basically amounts to a thrash-metal festival. SXSW 2011 was dominated by down tempo and stoner acts, so I'm sure the thrashers are looking forward to something faster.
Besides the Hull show, all the shows I've been were at or above capacity, and the people at the Hull show were happy to be there. Last year we had over 200,000 attendees and the number is supposed to be higher this year.
@SXSW Lifer, either you're trying to slander our partner because he's not part of your elitist club or you're just trolling. I suppose I should thank you for the attention, though. All the comments should pique our readers' interest.
27. writes:
i weep at being called a thief....hahahahaha....is that all you have, call me something truly unique and have not been called before...calling DB a noob is showing how trully pathetic you are because you got shown that you have to change your name and try your best to make yourself sound like you are someone that knows everything when you are nobody of any importance and never will be.....
30. writes:
Please list some of the free metal shows at night from last year. I must have missed them and I'm curious what I missed. I am asking in all seriousness.
Every night show I went to was a paid show and I don't regret going to any of them, even though a couple were largely bands I didn't care for - just good headliners. Should I have boycotted them all on principle alone and demand free shows? They were all pretty packed too, regardless of charging for entry.

31. writes:
@BG: Hahahahahahahahaha!!! So you played a gig for free? Or, at least one badge, cuz that's all the bands get. Way to be hypocritical. BTW, how'd that rock career thing work out for ya?
@branded: Wasting words on troglodyte meatheads is better left to those who give a rat's ass.
@Rex: Not sure what this means -- "all the shows I've been" -- now I understand why no one at MetalUnderground gets paid.
SXSW 2011 stoner fest? Hmmm, let's see. Havok, Kvelertak, The Faceless, Animals As Leaders, Veil Of Maya, Bad Brains, Arson Anthem, Haarp, Warbeast, Structures, All Pigs Must Die, Trap Them, The Red Chord, Goes Cube, Meek Is Murder, T.R.A.M., The Acacia Strain, Within The Ruins, Dawn Of Ashes, The Funeral Pyre, Across The Sun, Wormrot, Horse The Band, Skrew, Skatenigs, Pentagram, Ken Mode, Agalloch, Amber Asylum, Evergreen Terrace, Asking Alexandria, Emmure, I See Stars, Trash Talk, Liturgy, Ringworm, Magrudergrind, Kill The Client, Owen Hart, Helmet, Crowbar, Tombs, Grayceon, Castevet, etc. Nary a stoner band among the bunch.
Guess you don't even know basic genres of metal. Again, obvious why you don't get paid.
Oh yeah, and Hull played an official showcase last year and A FREE SHOW!!!!! I guess they don't support other metal bands, huh?
As far as drawing any attention to this PAID SHOW, I'm not concerned. The amount of people reading here is negligible at best. And I can bet you the overwhelming majority of them won't be anywhere near Austin during SXSW. Nice try though.
Me and the elitists (you know, those of us who like FREE SHOWS!!!) will attempt to have fun without you. Shouldn't be difficult.
@Deathbringer: I see you moderated my additional post about Hoek's Death Metal Pizza 7-day Metal Fest which is ABSOLUTELY FREE!!! And goes from noon until 2:00am every day. And, oh yeah, did I mention that it was FREE?!?!?!
33. writes:
Lifer: Yep, more than once. It's never really been a career for me. Cant say it's ever paid all my bills but I did get to tour the US and Europe on someone else's dime so I guess you could say Im pleased with how it all worked out for me. What about you? You ever been out of Texas before? I heard you take rope to the face in the airport restrooms down there. So much so that your face looks like a painters radio. Hows that workin out for ya? You gettin your fair share of uncut tips to the jaw?
34. writes:
SXSW Lifer: post approved - it was flagged automatically. Well the more you talk, the less I care. Being elitist about free shows is silly to argue about. I had an amazing time last year. No regrets. I did not make it to a show at Hoek's because I always had something else going on and those bands just didn't catch my eye. I did get their pizza, but don't think I ever saw the inside of the place to see how big it is. Sure, I like free, but I would not have missed Kylesa, Agalloch, Pentagram, St Vitus or the many other great shows I saw for another show just because it was free. I saw many of the bigger name bands for the first time as well as tons of more underground bands. So arguing about free shows (which I saw many good ones too), is pointless.
35. writes:
And to back of Darren's comment: yes, a lot of the shows had a down-tempo vibe, and I felt a big style shift from what I normally listen to while down there. Sure, there were fast, thrashy, extreme bands too, but many of the shows I went to and bands I saw were very sludge and doom oriented. With so many options, it could have just been where we landed though.
36. writes:
@SXSW, I must have forgotten to add the word "to" to my statement. Oh wait, my college is on the phone. They said they are revoking my degree. Obviously, you don't understand the modifier "down tempo" because you listed several bands that play at slower paces--Pentagram, Agalloch, Amber Asylum, Haarp and Crowbar. Also, my patience is wearing thin. You see my picture, add glasses to it and you can find me. Come disrespect me to my face and find out what happens. It must feel good to have the Internet as a safety net, as well as your anonymity. It makes your feel like a tough guys because we all know punks like you who talk smack from behind their computers are only getting revenge for all the beat downs you've received. I know most of the metal heads around town, so I'll find you. Watch your back!

Wow! Holy fvckin anger! SxSW or whoever he is,is a fvckin chode! Calls out Branded about downloading, then makes a big deal about a 15$ cover charge. Sounds like he's got scene connections, gets in to all the exclusive shows for nothing. Fvckin tosser! Hell,id pay 15 bucks for a nights entertainment,no problem. Anyways, off topic; when will the MU's best of '11 be announced? Just curious. Thanks.
39. writes:
exactly, i would gladly pay $15 to see 14 bands in a festival type atmospehere anytime!! I d/l music, but have no problems at all at paying to see a live show where i know the bands get the money owed to them. also, i buy merch and that shows me exactly where my money goes to,

I'd wager it's because he got his arse chewed by the manager at McDonalds for overcooking the fries or some sh!t. It makes for a valid argument for free shows if you can't afford 20 bucks to buy a ticket or a coupe of bucks for a slice of pizza. These things seem to be very important to the lad.

50. writes:
Well, that was fun! Sorry I missed it...
I will say that Tex C0CKsnout4life has a valid point: roughly $1 per band for a multi band thrash fest is a MAJOR fvckin ripoff!! :)

definitely failed if he thinks he got under my skin about anything....he is just your typical faceless internet coward who has to smack talk in order to feel tough. if he has to cry about $15 being too much that shows you how he feels about the any of the bands involved in the festivities, because he has shown he wouldnt pay a small cover for a show and show any kind of support to the bands..........
54. writes:
And a total hypocrite to boot, branded. Call someone out for downloading, then make a big scene and production about a $15 cover, and there being too many free shows to pay such a HIGH charge to see 14 bands! Crazy! Hell,i pay $10 cover to see five or six nobody bands at the local Knights of Columbus hall,so 15 bucks isnt nothing. Some people...

If $15 for a show is to much for you, then why do you attend shows in the first place? if your just in it to see a band for free, you 1. don't support metal music. 2. don't support the bands that travel from all around the US to play for YOU. and 3. you just aren't a fan of music in general.
music is so downloaded nowadays to see a great killer show for $15 is no problem for me whatsoever,
expecally if it's all my local metal bands from colorado thrashin up the stage in ATX.
sxswlifer, it's a shame you think so highly of the music at sxsw but you don't look at the broader picture of the music.
anyways, have fun at your free shows man, i'll support the musicians so that we all have a fun time down there.

And that's before we even know what SXSW metal showcases will be happening later that night.
Smoochies, sunshine!!

You should count your blessings you can attend ANY free events, I live in a place where u have to pay a huge amount to see anything!!!! The bands that do come here charge a fortune! Most bands don't even come close to this place so I have to pay out for flights, hotels, car rental etc. but if music is your passion, it's worth it! Nobody here cries about it - pay up or shut up!
SXSW Lifer - I'm sure you'll find more than that up BG1's a$$ - maybe if u reach in really deep you'll find some free tickets ;)

Sorry you don't agree with the price tag on the show that we've sponsored. Free or not, there will be many options and I'm sure there will be people at all of the shows. But it does not give you the right to come here and troll and especially attack anyone about it. Pretty ridiculous that these guys are going to be charging a cover of $15 to $20 when every single other day show will be free. Yes, I've seen Enslaved, Helmet, Motorhead, Hogh On Fire, 1349, Napalm Death, Metallica, Kvelertak, Red Fang, Havok (who is playing this gig), Meek Is Murder, Crowbar, Skrew, Kylesa, etc. in the past two years for absolutely no money. Didn't need a badge either!
This is a joke! Enjoy the 10 people in the audience.
All of you other metalheads be sure to go to the Full Metal Texas day show, the MetalSucks day show, the Artery Foundation day show, etc. ALL FREE!!!
