Its just a matter of time before Portnoy and Dream Theatre reunite. This whole scenario reminds me of Vince Neil leaving Motley Crue, Rob Halford leaving Priest and coming back, etc. DT need Portnoy and Portnoy needs DT. I think Portnoy just wants to break out of the endless record-tour-record-tour cycle of DT and just blow off his steam on working on another side projects that he otherwise could not indulge in because of the confines of DT. Once he gets this out of system and DT does maybe at most two albums with Mangini Portnoy will return.

Mike Portnoy didn't deny that he wants to go back to DT after what happened. He even announced that he tried to talk to DT (Manager, not the actual members) about coming back. But DT refused to do so. That was before they invited drum monsters like Minneman and Mangini to compete for the next DT drummer. Portnoy boldly told the fans about what happened not to gain sympathy, but to let everyone know that his pride is not hindering the fans' demand to reunite the band. Well, you can't blame them. I'm sure that Petrucci and the rest loved Portnoy and knows what it feels like without him more than we do, but to abandon your family just like that after 25 years... That's very insane. A Drummer is defined as the backbone of a band. They must have been completely paralyzed before Mangini came.

^^^ To Lacrimosa:
I agree that Portony leaving DT was a bad decision by him in the first place but Petrucci said in an interview that Portnoy asked to come back AFTER DT had already hired Mangini. Mangini was teaching at Berkley and after they asked him to join the band he left Berkley. Petrucci said it was a band decision to stay with Mangini because he had already made a sacrifice by leaving his job and all that.
