Dimmu Borgir To Pen New Broadway Musical entitled "Abracadabra!"
Today is a big day for symphonic black metal band Dimmu Borgir. Not only is Mike Portnoy signed to be their new drummer, but Dimmu Borgir has also entered into a contract with Theatre Direct International to write a new Broadway musical for the upcoming 2011 Fall Season. The joint press release is as follows:
“Theatre Direct International and Dimmu Borgir are pleased to announce a partnership for the 2011 Fall Season to produce the new musical "Abracadabra!" It will replace “Rain: A Tribute to the Beatles” at the Brooks Atkinson Theatre, and will showcase how far music has come in the 40-plus years since “Let It Be.” Shagrath’s innovation, grandeur and eye for dramatic flair should make this the most successful Broadway Musical of the season!”
The plot of "Abracadabra!" is fairly straightforward: it follows two young children on their trek from the depths of hell to salvation in the glaciers of Norway. While the spoken dialogue will be in English, the music itself will be mostly in Norwegian. Noted make-up artist Stuart Freeborn will work on makeup and costumes along with Shagrath, as Freeborn’s work on “The Empire Strikes Back” (which was filmed near Fince, Norway), gives him a leg up on design elements of Norway’s frozen wastes.
While Silenoz and Galder are planning to be included in the writing and production of "Abracadabra!" as full members on Dimmu Borgir, neither is making long-term plans. Silenoz told Metal Hammer UK yesterday, “Mustis and ICS Vortex would have been really handy to have around for "Abracadabra!", but you see what happened to them. So I’m not taking anything for granted.” That said, Shagrath is rumored to be very excited to include Galder and his massively bald head as the lord of the frozen wastes. No official word yet on how Portnoy will be involved in the production, although Broadway insiders close to the project believe Portnoy will push for his boxing robe to be included in the costume menagerie.
