Wendy Dio Responds To Westboro Baptist Church's Message About Ronnie

Photo of Black Sabbath

Band Photo: Black Sabbath (?)

In what would seem to be in response to the highly publicized plans of Westboro Baptist Church to picket Ronnie James Dio's memorial service and the information they posted about the man and his beliefs and legacy, Wendy Dio has issued the following update on RonnieJamesDio.com:

"Ronnie hates prejudice and violence! We need to turn the other cheek on these people that only know how to hate someone they didn't know. We only know how to love someone we know!"

As it's been discussed quite thoroughly in the comments of our previous article, I'd venture to say she's right.

And, of course she heard about it.

In my opinion, the statement made by WBC was just plain sick. It was so outrageous that I honestly started to think it was a hoax.
I suppose not.

Great to see that Wendy Dio went through their bullsh** with the first 3 words ("Ronnie hates prejudice ").

That's really all that needed to be said about the WBC clowns.

I'd like to have my picture taken with them. Everyone should do it. To me, the biggest counter to what they are trying to do would be to stand right in front of them, or better yet, among them, throw up the horns, give a big smile, and have another die-hard metalhead snap off a picture.

Imagine if, rather than being disgusted by them as I'm sure they're used to and clearly desire, they were instead approached, even welcomed, by smiling Dio fans wanting to get their picture taken. Actually wanting these protesters to be part of the ceremony. It would make them like the sideshow freaks they are, the equivalent of getting your picture taken with the bearded lady. To be offended by them would be giving them what they want, to be entertained by them would most likely drive them even more batty.

I'd want them to know that they simply added to the experience, rather than detracted from it. Not only that, a photo with them would be quite the keepsake. I'd mail poster-sized copies of it to their church on a weekly basis.

I'm bringing my camera.

If you listen to fools, the mob rules.

As much as these idiots deserve a massive ass-kicking, you can't win a battle of ideas/ideals by throwing punches. And a memorial service isn't the place for a brawl any more than it's a place for a protest.

.

Besides, I think with fanatics like this, pointing and laughing is much more effective than anger.

.

They WANT anger. They WANT violence. Instead, treat them like an amusing side-show. Since really, that's what they are: a traveling freak show. They haven't earned the right to be taken seriously. So snicker. Point and laugh. I like @ICurseZoidberg's idea of everyone trying to get their picture taken with them.

They aren't worthy of the honor of an actual fight.

I love ICurseZoidberg's suggestion of having your picture taken with them, horns raised. Everyone should do that! Smile at them. Treat them as entertainment. They won't know how to handle that: it'll drive them nuts! They're pretty much immune to insults and threats: they're used to that.

Well done to Wendy for a simple, dignified and entirely appropriate response.

I spoke with a rep from the Guard Riders. He left me with some solid advice to pass along, which a lot of you have mentioned:

"This group seeks attention. Deny them that. Ignore them. Any interaction with them increases the probability of a bigger write-up in the newspaper.

Any thought of winning an altercation with them is an illusion. You can run up to one of them and bust their jaw and run away and think you've gotten away with it. The truth is that you have just let them win. They have very little interest in catching and suing you, although they might if law enforcement apprehends you.

The PGR has been quite successful at this (denying them cause for lawsuits, i.e. funding), so they are now seeking alternative things to protest where they know we will not be (this memorial).

It is possible that there would be a lot of "hype" about this group for a few days leading up to the memorial. In this instance, the media is a great supporter of this group. [Instead] Have people call in the radio and TV stations and tell listeners what I have told you.

Simply because of the notoriety of this group, I would expect the local law enforcement to be well prepared after a permit is applied for. They have their own communications networks for learning how to address this kind of event and being a large city (Los Angeles) I believe they would "lay down the law". "

Thanks to the patriots for taking time to respond. Sounds like good advice.

I'll admit-- my knee-jerk reaction when I first heard about the picket was to picture WBC vs. thousands of grieving metalheads, and hope they finally got a much-deserved ass-kicking.

But my next thought was to think that's the last thing Ronnie would want at his memorial.

And, then I realized (as has been pointed out by many people in this thread), would help the WBC douchebags more than it would hurt them.

Contempt. They are beneath our notice. Ignore them, because they don't even deserve the respect of being considered worthy foes.

They deal with WBC protests by getting people to pledge money for every minute the Phelps clan protests. Thus, the longer the WBC's hang around, the more money is earned for a contrary cause.

We should do something like this and donate the money to the Stand Up And Shout Cancer Fund.

Since all they do is preach about Satan and his work, doesn't that make them Satan worshipers? It seems that they think anyone who makes a reference to Satan is a Satan worshiper, so maybe they need to take a long hard look at themselves first. In the last week, I wish I had a dime for every story I have heard about how Ronnie always put other people before himself. I mean, who thinks they are a "god" and still holds the door open for everyone at the hotel? I don't think even the nicest Satan worshiper would even do that. You took care of it the way it should have been handled Wendy. I really wish I could be there this weekend to celebrate Ronnie's life with you. Dio will live on forever!!! \m/ \m/

I am a Christian myself and a Dio fan as well, and I gotta say did Dio go to Heaven or Hell, that I really cannot say for sure, I am not God and it is not up to me to decide if Dio went to Heaven or Hell.

One thing I can say is Westboro Baptist Church has totally twisted scripture around.

God is not hate. God is love, do I believe Heaven exists? yes
Do I believe hell exists? yes

Do I believe God sends people to hell? no, it is sin that sends us to hell, scripture says all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God but Jesus Christ died for all sinners, even murderers, rapists and homosexuals (Fred Phelps are you reading this?) if one turns away from their sins and accepts Christ as savior, they will go to Heaven no matter what they had done before getting saved.

Kerry Livgren of Kansas said when Dio recorded 2 songs with him in 1980, Dio seemed to know the truth of Christ and some interviews I read of Dio, it seems he realized the truth too as well, did Dio ever accept Christ as savior before he died? I cannot say for sure, I hope so but it is not my place to say he did or didn't and it is not Westboro Baptist Church's place to say so either, but I do have a warning for Fred if he doesn't depart from his ways, Jesus says "depart from me I never knew thee." to those who claim to follow him but prove they really do not and you appear to be one of those persons Fred Phelps.

Even the preacher in Sweden who got jailed for preaching homosexuality is a sin, does not approve of your behavior Mr. Phelps, and why not? well because although scripture lists homosexuality among sinful acts, the Swedish preacher who got arrested knows that Christ is merciful even to homosexuals, I know it too but you Mr. Phelps refuse to realize it which is obvious from your God Hates Fags rally, which has been denounced by loads of Christians, even Christians who oppose Gay Marriage do not approve of the Phelps approach.

I hope Ronnie James Dio is in heaven but regardless may God have mercy on Fred's soul and may the funeral of Dio not get disrupted by Fred Phelps and his group (I hope the Phelps group is arrested before they disrupt Dio's funeral)
