Kerry King Warns Manson About What Not To Play

MTV.com reports: Guitarist Kerry King can’t even remember the last time his band — the iconic speed-metal maelstrom that is SLAYER — played a gig it didn’t close out. That’s because, with more than 25 years in the business, SLAYER have been a headlining act for quite some time. When SLAYER take the stage, no one else follows. Or at least that’s the way things were before the band decided to team up with MARILYN MANSON.
SLAYER’s summer co-headlining run with MANSON is set to kick off July 25 in West Palm Beach, Florida, and will hit 25 cities before concluding September 1 in San Antonio.
“[This tour has] been in the works for a good part of this year, and the way it started out was, we were looking to do another Unholy Alliance this summer,” King explained of the festival, which featured MASTODON, LAMB OF GOD, CHILDREN OF BODOM and THINE EYES BLEED last year. “Then, when we found out we’d probably be touring with MANSON, he didn’t want to call it [the Unholy Alliance]. So, we were like, ‘Fine, man. Let’s just go out and do a big tour.’ He basically said [playing festival runs] wasn’t who he is anymore, and we were like, ‘All right.’ It didn’t make much sense to me, but that’s who he is now, I guess.”
So, while this summer’s trek is billed as a “co-headliner,” King said each and every date on the tour will end with a set from MANSON.
“It is completely co-headlining, except that he wanted to close every day, and we’re like, ‘Hey, knock yourself out,’” King said. “We’ve been in so many situations like that, and sometimes, it’s better not to be the last band on. So, we’re just kind of happy about it. I don’t have the ego that makes me — and I’m not saying MANSON does — but I don’t have the ego that makes me have to close every show. I won’t be playing any longer, and we’ll be done with our show and be able to chill for a change.”
But, while some speculate that the two artists have vastly different fanbases, King said the pairing does make sense to him. And if MANSON plays his cards right, he might not witness a mass exodus of SLAYER fans leaving each venue once King’s crew is through.
“It’s definitely going to be weird,” he admitted. “My whole thing is, it depends on what MANSON plays, whether our kids stay or not. If he comes out and plays ‘Tainted Love,’ half the place is going to leave. No offense to MANSON — I’m just saying what’s up. I want him to come out and kick ass, because I’m an old-school fan. He can succeed on this tour, if he chooses the right set.”
SLAYER fans might be pleased to know that this summer’s tour will coincide with the re-release of 2006’s Christ Illusion on July 24. The limited-edition set will contain the previously unreleased cut “The Final Six,” as well as an alternate version of “Black Serenade.” The reissue marks the band’s first collaboration with new label home Columbia Records; SLAYER left Warner Bros. when longtime producer Rick Rubin jumped ship to head Columbia back in May.
“This version of ‘Black Serenade‘ is the version [guitarist] Jeff [Hanneman] originally wrote, and during the miscommunications of recording, it came out the way it did,” said King. “I like the original version better. And ‘The Final Six‘ was a song that just wasn’t finished in time for the record, because [frontman] Tom [Araya] had to head home for [gall-bladder] surgery.”
“The Final Six,” said King, “isn’t going to sound out of place, because it was written for Christ Illusion. So, it’s just another song off of that album, and it’s not separate at all. The track was recorded by the time Christ Illusion came out — we just had to have Tom sing on it.”
The reissue will also boast a bonus DVD called “Slayer on Tour ‘07.” It will include the “Eyes of the Insane” video; a live rendition of the band’s 1988 LP South of Heaven that was shot in Vancouver, British Columbia, on last year’s Unholy Alliance run; and a behind-the-scenes, five-minute documentary-style montage of footage shot earlier this year when the band performed in Florida and Australia.
As for SLAYER’s next album, King said it will be a while. The band hopes to book another tour toward the end of this year but has no definitive plans to write or record anytime soon. “It would be awesome to have football season off,” King joked.

Manson's closing EVERY show? Then there's no "co-headline" about it. That's merely a marketing label.
And I might be a fan of Slayer's music, but Kerry King is an egomaniac and even a fan like myself will admit that Slayer couldn't sell out venues THIS large without help from another band.

I don't think it's going to be a very good tour. Depending who the other band is going to be, I would want to show up late because I don't want to sit through Bleeding Through. I would really only want to see Slayer and when they are done I would leave because I don't care for Mansons stuff. But its very sh**ty they MM is closing all show that is disgusting

Well, it's still co-headlining because they will be playing the same length sets. Yes, there will be Slayer fans leaving the gig early but there will also be plenty of Manson fans who might hate Slayer and have to sit through their set so... tit for tat I guess.

The once great Slayer are now a money machine, get used to it. Waste of space, waste of time. They sound different, act different and think different. Lyrics are laughable, image is in tatters and the fanbase is a nu-bunch of 15 year olds who need a commercial metal act to tag on to and make themselves look cool.

I've seen slayer on numerous billlings, festivals, solo headline and co-headline (with slipknot). Every time they gave it 110%, and not an ounce of ego. If they've made a pile of cash, they've earnt every penny. If Slayer_losers has ever been to a Slayer concert then he needs to get his eyesight checked - clearly cannot distinguish kids from adults.

Um..hey slayer_losers the almighty SLAYER has been around for 25 FRIGGIN' YEARS how are they supposed to keep everything the same for that long? You want them to still be wearin spandex and facepaint? They've changed, but for the better. Like citrus said they got a lot of money but they earned every last cent.

I figured Manson would have enough respect for Slayer that he would say "hey no.....I insist...you guys go on last" but no...becuase he's the allmighty f***ing manson he has to be the last performer....which honestly is a good thing...now I don't have to sit through garbage

i dont get what people have against commercial bands, theyre commercial because they make rockin music and naturally if a song/album is good enuff thyre gonna get noticed by more and more people, also manson should be headlining slayer are old as sh*****e and getting to that overrated stage

17. writes:
i wouldnt worry about people leaving after slayer because if most slayer fans are like me and my friends a fight is gonna start at the f***ing doors, manson sucks, and manson fans are fags, most manson fans will be disappointed and scared because theyll walk in and find a real mosh pit not a bop ur head and share ur feelings circle

I highly doubt manson cares about half of you all staying for his show. He got your money your money already. Hell IF EVERYONE left after slayer manson could save cash and go drink n do drugs. Either way if im giving manson my money im watching his show. Sorry but im not spending alot of cash for front row just to see slayer. Love slayer... but im paying for all of it.

Manson is just an act. I wish people would realize that. It's called Shock for a reason. When people start blaming you for the assault of a highschool, you're either honestly trying to promote such things, or you're doing a damn good job faking it.
I've never been one for Slayer's vocals. Love their guitar work and drum work, but the vocals. . .eh, shut not my style.
But this is one odd f***ing tour. Slayer, Bleeding Through, and Manson really have nothing in common except they all have shirts for sale at Hot Topic.

music is commercial because it sells, not because its good. it sells because everyone can get into it, its easy to listen to. theres nothing challenging about it. i can think of tons of bands that are popular commercial but musically are f***ing terrible, i mean just listen to any numetal band, or any of these supposed new "hard rock" bands like the atrocious hinder and nickelback. have you paid attention to popular music recently? american idol anyone? and youre going to say because that sells that its rockin or good? you logic is insane.
and on another note, why the f*** is marilyn manson headlining? there would be no marilyn manson if there wasnt a slayer. i want to see a slayer show, but going to this and having to sit through bleeding through and having to deal with a bunch of numetal kids in huge pants is too much for me to handle. i used to be into manson when antichrist came out and it was cool to rebel because i was a teenager, but now i notice hes just a one trick pony, a washed up one trick pony with every new cd just being worse and worse.

24. writes:
"Are you kidding? "There would be no marilyn manson if there wasn't slayer?" hahahaha i can't even respond to that man. i'm sorry."
so youre basically saying that bands like slayer whos songs have the same themes that manson had at one point in his career had no affect on little brian warner? yea ok dude. i'm pretty sure that he had looked up to slayer quite a bit in his youth and early career. and no, im not forgetting about alice cooper and david bowie either.
