Marilyn Manson Talks About New Album, "Eat Me, Drink Me"

In the latest issue of Rolling Stone magazine, Marilyn Manson talks about his new album "Eat Me, Drink Me", which is tentatively set for a June release.
"Halfway though last year I was in such a black hole of depression," he says. "I couldn't make anything, I couldn't do anything. I lost hope." At the time, Manson's mother was diagnosed with a mental illness and, he says, "I got trapped in one of the classic rock and roll cliches of having people work for me rob me behind my back."
Manson says he was finally uplifted by a close friend's morbid gesture of devotion. "She picked up a butcher's knife and said, 'Here, you can stab me'" he says. "When someone was willing to drown with me, I really didn't want to drown anymore." This theme is depicted in the six-minute epic "If I Was Your Vampire", which Manson wrote on Christmas. "That song is the new 'Bela Lugosi's Dead'," says Manson. "It's the all-time gothic anthem."
The album's lyrics were written after last Halloween. That night, Manson presided over the opening of his Los Angeles art gallery. The next morning he left his home in the Valley and set up temporary digs at a studio-equipped house in the Hollywood Hills. "Suddenly," he says, "I felt liberated. I'd write a song, walk two doors down the hall and record it right then." Manson's lyrics, which were recorded over tracks crafted by Tim Skold (who joined Manson's band in 2002 as bassist), came quickly. "I was writing out of desperation and hope," he says. "The record came out in a rush-like an open wound-and I went with it."

well i am just excited to hear that he is working on new music and thsat they is a possible tour in the works, if they are playing with NIN since NIN hasnt toured in the US since the With Teeth tour this may be interesting...not to make any assumptions but then again who would open for who whatever this may not even happen.,.MM is awesome and i have liked them for a few years now and he did not sell out yet he still kept his "SHOCK ROCK" image through out his entire career and i dont really see him seeling out since he hasnt made a new album for a long time and i hope they tour in america!!!!!! anywho MM rocks cause its a long hard road out of hell....jk....lol

Okay, I'm definitely not the first one to support Manson, since he's more or less a big blackened ego. But he's actually putting his feeling into this album it seems. The best work always comes from hardships, especially in our genres. So with that in mind, if Manson's not bullsh*tting about his hardships, then this will be his best work. Mind you, it would be alot of success for a Mainstream mallgoth musician, but at least the success will be from his heart, and not just from what rhymes and sparks controversy simultaneously. But this is from a lyrical standpoint, instrumentally, I'm not expecting much past the usual simple chords and synthesizers that are now associated with industrial. But at least it will have heart...

Just let me say this. Marylin Masson is one of the greatest advertising dude i have ever seen. Everything he does is calculated so we will speak of him.. He undertands that better than anybody...he is self made and very intelligent. Don't like is music but I like is sense of publicity and his ability to manipulate the medias.

Manson is probarbly one of the greatest musicians to ever walk this planet. His sense and style cannot be recreated. He is smart, intelligent, and does what he pleases. I can see a lot of people having a problem with that so yeah everyone who hates him wants to be like him. All being said, he is awesome and cant wait for the new album.

Manson is intelligent his book is highly readable and i used to be into his music.. but No.. god no Bela Legosi's dead is one of the all time goth tracks, along with Black Celebration by Depeche Mode..
A christmas song with the word vampire in the title will not be considered a goth tune. let alone all time gothic anthem... Bearing in mind goths consider mazza manson to be a joke. and by goth i dont mean the mansonite teeny goths.

He is so good at controlling the medias and the crowd, Truly, he is very intelligent and knows how the game works. Yet, when he gets attacked or someone is asking for his opinion, he always shows great knowledge of the subject and he is well prepared.
As fat as the music goes, he did not make anything new or timeless and he should probably just thank shock rock acts like Alice Cooper who paved the way for him...he just went farther than those guys before which got him where he is today.
But after some time, he was not that shocking anymore, so he kind of lost popularity. We got use to it. now he is stcuk in a loop where he is trying to find ways to have people talk about him and pay attention but it doesn't work anymore...ah well, I guess that's the way it goes. People get shocked then get use to it...

I can't f***ing wait for this album, its been way too long now!! Manson is amazing. I was lucky enough to get backstage when he toured here in 2003 and i sat with him and drank half a bottle of absinth and talked about weird things and my boyfriend showed him his p***s.

I'm not going to say that I'm an "avid" MM follower, but I have been a fan since day one. I've noticed that there is a lot of "bashing" from people that really ought to put some thought behind the points they're trying to make. One: "Mallgoth" should NOT be used to describe Manson; It should, however, be used to describe the social "genre" that his music and image created. Two: A few of you said that Manson has changed and has "sold out". His career started with the intrests in music, money, & shock value. His intrests have NOT changed, therefore he has not sold out. About the changes: yes, there have been changes throughout the progression of his career. A successful music career SHOULD incorporate changes. People don't wander through life holding on to the same thoughts and emotions, therefore the music should reflect these changes. Bands that have a 20 year career that have the same riffs, same lyrics, same emotion (like Slayer, Morbid Angel, etc.) shows a certain degree of lack of talent. Three: This is for kjb-45at s... The fact that you (& others like you) are willing to judge a musician's talent based on his religious preferrence, shows exactly how ignorant you really are. You most likely have never really "listened" to his music and your knowledge of his career probably doesn't extend past the controversies and shock-value. You seem to be extremely closed-minded and should probably stick to gospel.

But who knows, maybe this will be the album to change my mind. I'll give it a chance. When I was growing up, we had our own Marylin Manson type artist. Alice Cooper. And I didn't care for Alice at first. He was just to shocking. To theatrical. To morbid. And then I realized that Alice was talking about real issues and making good points. I became an avid fan soon after and continue to rock out to Alice every so often. So, yea, I will give this new record a chance. Some people don't realize that musicians are human. They are not feeling the same feelings they felt 15-20 years ago today. A good example would be Metallica's ...And justice for all album as compared to Metallica's REload album. Alot of different feelings and emotions changed for James and crew over the years. He grew older and wasn't as p***ed off at the world anymore. So, we got the country songs on REload. HAHAHA!, but the point is..Is that people change. ( unless your Slayer, and stay in a constant state of p***ed. ) I love Slayer for that though. So I agree somewhat with "torridghost" when he/she speaks of change/changes. It's gonna happen people. It will happen to you. BLEED BLACK LABEL!!!!

Well. I'm excited to hear the new album. It's been a long time since The Golden Age of Grotesque, and I'm ready for some new music. I really am! I love what Manson has become. And it is a beautiful progression. It deserves respect. Im happy that not every single song of his sounds the same... He is not predictable at all. & I can't wait to see him live. I've been obsessing since I was 10 & my mom wouldnt let me watch him on the VMAs in '98. He was the forbidden fruit. =)

Oh, I am very glad about this new album. I felt empathy for Mr. Manson after his divorce. I was slightly frightened he may go on a downward spiral, hoping against it all the while. The artistic types do tend to 'drown' as Manson put it so poeticaly. He shall be bigger than all else this year, I feel. With 'Eat Me, Drink Me' and 'Phantasmagoria', he seems to be in a good cycle of creative madness. ^_^
