Iron Maiden's Official Response on Ozzfest Incident

Band Photo: Iron Maiden (?)
Iron Maiden manager Rod Smallwood has issued the following statement concerning the band's treatment at their final Ozzfest appearance in San Bernardino (line breaks inserted for readability):
"Maiden are currently returning from America and preparing for UK festivals this weekend and don't wish to waste time giving Sharon Osbourne's statement the dignity of a reply. Considering the disgraceful nature of the events that occurred they feel it's a pretty dismal effort at self justification and they don't think Metal fans are at all gullible and that they will easily see through it. They want no more to do with this sorry incident and are very much looking forward to headlining Reading and Leeds Festivals this weekend.
"I would however like to add my own comment on this. In 30 years in this business and after attending hundreds of gigs I have never seen anything anywhere near as disgusting and unprofessional as what went on that night. I was standing on our sound desk out front as usual but ran to the stage as soon as the hail of missiles began and from then on watched from the front of the stage right next to Bruce's walkway. The scale, viciousness and concentration of the throwing made it obvious that this was a premeditated and co-ordinated attack. Assaulting musicians while performing by throwing bottle tops, lighters and eggs at them from just a few yards away is vile, dangerous, criminal and cowardly. It is incredible that Ozzfest security apparently did nothing about it - aren't they there to protect the bands too? Especially when the band is concentrating on a performance in front of 45,000 people and the missiles are coming out of the glare of the spotlights. And to spit at a band on stage is unforgivable. Iron Maiden, like all the bands on Ozzfest, had to sign quite onerous legal documents part of which was promising not to throw anything into the audience, even wristbands!!! Ironic isn't it[?]
"It is well documented on the web who was responsible for planning and participating in this attack and for musicians to join in this assault on other musicians is a shocking disgrace akin to treachery. You should all be thoroughly ashamed of yourselves. We know who authorised the making of the "Ozzy - Ozzy" chant tape the day before and how it was played secretly through the PA at the very beginning and end of our set. We also know who continually turned off the power interrupting our set at crucial moments. It is a good thing that the power was turned back on before there was a riot as you could sense on stage a lot of the huge audience were getting totally pissed off at this continual onslaught on the band. The great majority of the Ozzfest crew throughout the tour were terrific and we thank them. Those who participated or stood idly by and watched as this all went down should also be ashamed of themselves and I would certainly hope they never come near a tour with which we are involved.
"There is little point in my commenting on the chap with the flag or their trying to hold up Eddie or Sharon's speech as the audience made their feelings very clear on each occasion. And in the end what was all this about?? If l had any sort of problem or misunderstanding with a band working on a tour we were involved in I would go and talk to them or their manager - not wait until the end of a tour and assault and ambush them. Or was that really it?
"I find it staggering that this ambush would take place in front of any audience, let alone in San Bernardino, the biggest audience of the tour. Didn't that audience merit any consideration? They pay an awful lot to be there in terms of prices for tickets, parking, food, beer etc. Surely if they spend this sort of money they deserve to watch the bands they paid to see be able to put in a full unhindered performance. Free of danger and intimidation. If I had paid I would ask for my money back! And this audience really were outstanding, giving the band incredible support and many voting with their feet in disgust after the set and the speech, which to many was the final insult.
"I have to say I was immensely proud of Maiden who stood up to it all and showed great courage and just got better and better through the adversity. Their heads never dropped, instead they went on the offensive. It was a truly memorable moment when Bruce went to the very front of the stage during 'The Trooper' - something which he never normally does as he is usually on the ramps - waving the flag whilst avoiding the hail of missiles and yelling "This is a fucking British flag, and these colours don't fucking run!". The imperturbable attitude and ability of the band shone through and in the end made this a truly remarkable rock and roll event, even if for all the wrong reasons. We will have no more to say on this matter except that I do think the band deserve an apology from a number of people, and you know who you are."

They could've easily threw down their mics and instruments and walked off(Guns 'n' Roses) but they refuse to let Sharon & co. win. In the end I think Sharons' rant was a desperate attempt at a verbal sucker punch which blew up in her face. Their attitude and professionalism on stage is why they're still around after 25+ years. Most bands are lucky to get 3-5 years.

Good thing Maiden finished their set after everything that happened that night. For Sharon Osbourne to rant the way she did only made her look like a childish fool. After all, when she finished her speech the audience booed her offstage and chanted Maiden's name. And if I can remember correctly the auduence didn't begin leaving en-masse until the Sabbath set began. Clearly the music did the talking and Maiden came out on top (although Iommi was awesome).

I agree, that you don't rag on Ozzy or Ozzfest, but is that what really happened? I never heard it the 3 times I was at Ozzfest. Did you actually hear it or are you just buying into the crap that Sharon is spreading?
One thing you DON'T do is to RAG ON THE FANS!! I heard a couple of bands, including your beloved MUDVAYNE talk s h i t to the audience like: " You're at Ozzfest, so act like it." and "You are all a bunch of p u s s i e s" all because those bands gave poor performances with the crappy sound system, and the crowd wasn't impressed. They were way out of line to talk to the fans like that, or a Ozzy would say: "It's the Ultimate Sin!"
It wasn't the audiences' fault that those bands sounded like s h i t ! In fact, the audience was deafening with thunderous cheers when Iron Maiden performed. Iron Maiden has always thought highly of their fans, so everybody need to take a lesson from them. Would Mudvayne continue performing if Sharon pulled her s h i t on them? Who's to say she won't? I don't give her credit for having much intelligence after all this.
I've said it once, I'll say it a thousand times, you can't treat the fans like s h i t and then expect to make money from them, right Sharon? Wait a minuite, you DON'T know that!

Some say Ozzy/Sabbath are #1
and it s u c k s that Bruce supposedly dissed 'em
Some say Maiden is #1
and it s u c k s that Sharon attacked them
BUT THE MAIN POINT IS:
THE FANS ARE #1
and The FANS were the ones who were disrespected and endangered the most!
Sharon and her followers will never have a good excuse for treating the fans like that!
Okay, now everybody has said their opinions
NOW IS THE TIME TO TAKE ACTION!!
CONTACT OZZFEST AND DEMAND YOUR MONEY BACK!!
Even if you weren't at San Bernadino,
THE S H I T T Y SOUND SYSTEM alone is enough to warrant a REFUND!
If no refund is given, then everybody get together for a
CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT!!
Ever hear of "Reckless Endangerment"?
How about "Consumer Fraud"?
I am sure there are lawyers out there just waiting to jump on this one!
IT'S THE FANS WHO MATTER MOST, WITHOUT US ALL BANDS ARE NOTHING!!
Don't be timid little sheep!
STAND UP FOR YOURSELVES AND MAKE A DIFFERENCE!
METAL UP YER A S S!!

Obviously there are a lot of things you don't understand,
But maybe someday you will if you live long enough, DEADGUY.
Why don't you tell us what band you find to be worthy of you, and so much better than Maiden? Seriously, we want to know.........I'm sure it will be amusing. Who knows, you might even pick someone decent! C'mon, give it your best shot.

Iron Maiden rocks!!! I still can't believe that we were so close to seeing them at Ozzfest here. We unfortunately were the concert that cancelled due to Ozzy not feeling well at Floatrite Park in Sommerset, Wi. We had our tickets for months and this was the first Ozzfest we were bothering to attend and that was totally because Iron Maiden was touring with them. Does anyone know, is Maiden planning on coming back to the states to tour in the future? Hopefully, somewhere close to the St. Paul/Mpls, MN area so that we can see them.

Marcus, I think yer right, he's dead, or most likely, scared.
Cindyweg, Ozzy should have just let Bruce take over, like before. According to Dave Murray, they will be back at the end of this year or the beginning of the next. Go to http://www.ironmaiden.com for the first postings of upcoming tours.

I have one thing to say......Thats dissapointing....Bands should be more mature than this...Neither one of the bands had the right ot od these things to each other ! Maiden shouldnt have said the remark...Sharon shouldnt have gave the audience permission to throw dangerous objects at them !! This was so unprofessional its disgusting !! If Ozzy himself had handled this..None of this "non sense" would have happened..He is an Old fashioned guy..Who believes in talking..rather than violence !!!

24. writes:
I think Iron Maiden Is the best band to ever bless Ozzfest with their presence!!
Sharron Ozzbourne is nothing more than a spoiled rich b**** with a serious problem
No disrespect to ozzy but his wife should realize who the greatest band really is...
It was a childish display to egg a band that has the best guitarist and singer in the world at least bruce can talk and you can undestand him.

xmetaldrumer86x, you are one god damn stupid mother f***er. Like the other guy said, i'm not surprised either you ended up statement with Mudvayne kicks ass. They were the worst band on that tour. I went to ozzfest, more of the bands kicked off, but they are a joke! Mudvayne isn't metal in the least. Blaphamy for them to open up to the Gods of metal, Iron Maiden
I think the rest of the loyal fans on here, can back me up on this when i also agree that this year, it was MAIDENFEST!
I lost alot of respect for the Osbourne Name

Thank you Mr Smallwood-I too was appalled at the behavior of not only the assailants in the crowd, but of Sharon Osbourne as well. She sure made a fool of herself. I am proud to call myself a Maiden fan, and it was with great joy that I brought my 19 year old daughter to her first Ozzfest to see Iron Maiden, as far as I was concerned, THE headlining band. After the display of Sharon, we had no desire to stick around for Black Sabbath-doesn't Ozzie realize how foolish she made his camp look? Bruce and guys-you absolutely rock-Steve Harris-you are the reason this girl wanted to learn how to play bass-saw you guys in Long Beach in the late 80's and fell in love. Keep up the great work and give 'em hell like the TROOPERS you are-Love and respect-Peg, metalmom
