Dallas Magazine Apologizes For Running Dimebag 'Casket Photo'

Photo of Damageplan

Band Photo: Damageplan (?)

A weekly Dallas magazine has apologized to the friends and family members of late DAMAGEPLAN/ex-PANTERA guitarist "Dimebag" Darrell Abbott for running a photo on the cover of last week's issue of what appeared to be Dimebag lying in his casket prior to being buried. Dallas Observer Managing Editor Patrick Williams has released the following statement regarding the matter:

"To all the fans, friends and family of 'Dimebag' Darrell Abbott who wrote and called in to complain about our image of the slain rocker on the cover of last week's issue, please know this: We did not, whatever you may think, shoot a photo of him lying in his casket. The image we published of the DAMAGEPLAN guitarist, who was slain by a crazed fan at an Ohio nightclub December 8, was an illustration created by artist David Hollenbach based on old file photos of Abbott. (Four other people, including the gunman, were also killed in the attack.)

"The band's manager called to let us know that Abbott's family was terribly upset at the sight of the grim illustration, and for that we're sorry. But at the risk of sounding both insincere with that apology and callous, we also must say that even if we could go back and change the decision to run that cover, we wouldn't. Here's why:

"A long time ago, Buzz was working at a small newspaper when news broke of a mass shooting at a McDonald's restaurant in Southern California. The morbid wits on the news desk began making the usual tasteless jokes. ('Guess someone got the Unhappy Meal by mistake.') Then The Associated Press sent over photos of the victims — yearbook photos of smiling children. The jokes stopped. Later on, we worked as a cop reporter for a bigger paper, and one of our jobs was to call on the families of murder and traffic accident victims and ask grieving people for photos of their dead loved ones. It was ugly, intrusive work, but we did it willingly, because we remembered the reaction to that earlier shooting. So many violent deaths are buried in briefs in the back pages of newspapers that it's easy to forget that each death involves the loss of a real person. Something as simple as a photo puts a face on these stories and brings the loss into clearer focus, making these 'routine' stories of mayhem seem less remote. It's the news biz's imperfect way of telling a community to pay attention.

"So it was with our somber image of Abbott, whose grieving friends describe as a vibrant, friendly man. Our intent with that cover was to help the mass of Dallas Observer readers feel something of their loss and grief. Was that worth the added pain we inadvertently caused Abbott's friends and family? You may think not, but we respectfully disagree. Sorry about that."

If it was an illustration then I dont think it was in bad taste. If it was an actual photo they are publishing, then somebody is sick in the head. But It looks too surreal to be a photo. Nice artist interpretation. No different then paintings of Jesus on the cross.

I think they just need to give the man and his family the peace they need to deal wi th this. They dont need pictures of him in his casket on evry newspaper and magazine. I think that anyone who takes a picture of that to sell to and news editor should be give the same death as jesus christ.

We will miss you with all our hearts, and remember you!
My heart goes out to his family and everyone in this life. He is and always will be an insperation for us... The Children Of Heavy Music!

Everyone should have a nice tall glass of JD in memory of Darrell Abbott

Great, thanks a lot to the Dallas Observer for turning this tragedy into a publicity stunt. That photo is beyond obscene!! Photo, drawing, computer image, whatever the f***, it's f***ing morbid and disrespectful! Dimebag's family must have been devastated. I'll tell you what, I pray that the idiot who "drew" that picture never has to see an artist's redition of his own loved one on a magazine cover!

'Pain we inadvertently caused Abbott's family?'

Horsesh**. You know as well as I do that if you do a drawing of someone's recently brutally murdered family member in a casket and stick it on the front cover of the local paper, the family's gonna get p***ed off. f*** the Dallas Observer. Flagrant tastelessness and utter disregard for the Abbott family's feelings just to sell a few more copies to the morbid f***ing hordes out there. He says something as simple as a photo puts a perspective on these things, well, here's a crazy idea, why not put a f***ing photo of Dime there instead of this casket sh**? I saw one a while ago of Phil and Dime asleep on a tourbus or something, you know, these two 'badass' guys looking so peaceful. Something like that would've been perfect for what this editor sh**s on about.

DAMN STRAIGHT! Of course they got p***ed off. i would get p***ed, you would get p***ed, in fact, we are p***ed about this. how heartless to do something like that, while i'm sure many magazines posted a photo of john lennon on the cover back in 1980, it wasn't a casket shot. it was just a picture, this papaer could've done the same thing!

Dude, a psycho gunned down four innocent people at a concert. I think people should be able to figure out that that's pretty f***ing awful on their own. If not... well, they certainly shouldn't breed, anyway...

i realize what your saying, it's not like forgetting to take the trash out on saturday. many people around here where i am really don't care that they died and that it doesn't affect their breathing. cold, huh? but it's the truth. people have forgotten, or never really knew at all, how bad this was.

I think it's because we're so accustomed to hearing about people gunned down in the media, that unless they know someone involved or were at the scene, the average person doesn't give a toss. I don't understand it, maybe it's just a self-defense mechanism to help them cope with the complete sh**tiness of this world. Either way, I'm on the other side of the globe, and it sure as hell affects me.

Mainland, about an hour north of Sydney in a town called Woy Woy. British Comedian, Spike Milligan once referred to it as the world's only above ground cemetary, and that pretty much sums it up.

For liz, that's means there are a lot of old people here, not brain-eating zombies... althought that would be an improvement. It's kind of like Australia's version of Fort Lauderdale, only much, much smaller.
