Uranium Interview With Shadows Fall

Vocalist Brian Fair was asked to help launch Juliya from Uranium’s website, www.juliya.net, by answering 10 band related questions.

1. You guys incorporate both, traditional Heavy Metal as well as elements of Death Metal and Hardcore. You have been on tours of all types, which is the most aggressive scene?

It all depends on how you look at it. We did a tour once with Hatebreed, Six feet Under, Shadows Fall and Death Threat and that was probably the most brutal tour because it drew hardcore kids and death metal kids to the same show so all hell broke loose every night. Hardcore kids definitely dance harder but metal heads seem to hurt each other more but enjoy it. When you combine the two it is total insanity.

2. The beautiful thing about your music (especially in this record) is that you have a lot of old school style riffs which appeals to an older crown as well as a lot of modern crunchy riffs with melodic and deep growling aggressive vocals. Do you see a large variety in your audiences and which style is more fun for you?

We are influenced by every form of heavy music, from old school metal, to rock n roll to thrash and hardcore. We grew up playing both metal and hardcore so all of it will be incorporated in our sound. They are fun and I couldn't imagine limiting ourselves to on specific style. That would be come too repetitive for me.

3. Do you feel that you are bringing back the essence of traditional metal?
We are not trying to bring anything back, we just…

If they're unhappy with the situation, they should use their own f***ing judgement and not be involved to begin with, or leave if they decide they don't like it. If they're marrying children, well that's more of a pedophile issue than a polygamy issue.

American has become a moralless country.
ac666, it's different here in the U.S., mostly, the underage wife gets "signed over" to her husband by her parents, because at that time, they are legally binding the marrige. if the wife gets married, her legal guardian now becomes her husband, and if they choose to leave they will only be brought back by state law, because of the law binding gurdians to their keepers.

52. sandy writes:

brokenwings (and others up there), why are you so ignorant? you need to step outside of your one-sided perspectives and take in all perspectives before you go on placing an irrational claim and opinion about something.

With regards to polygamy, there are several cultures where that is accepted. And if you are in a polygamous relationship, i think you'd be aware of the fact that your husband or wife had other partners because you were in that marriage as well. If you were oblivious to that fact, it would be cheating, but because you are a part of it, its reasonable. I don't understand what your point is for this topic...

With respect to homosexual people, you have strong opinions against them. Why are you so against them? What is your problem with someone being involved with someone from the same-sex? Why are you against same-sex marriages? Taking in account the evolutionary perspective (like someone up there mentioned), with technology now adays, it is quite possible for same-sex women couples to have children - yea, its not a natural way cuz the sperm is implanted, but the birth is still natural. With regards to same-sex male couples, they can adopt. There are so many orphans in the world and this would give the orphans a chance at developing normally. So in the end, the benefits of that outweigh the costs.

As for Canada being ignorant, what are you on? Canada didn't decide to go out and start a massive bombing spree and start WWIII. Canada has many allies. I can't say the same for the US. The people of Canada are not egocentric like the people of the US are. We are able to rationalize things and not step out of line.

As for the homosexual gene, the forthcoming of that is still in its beginning stages. So obviously we will be unable to find very many details on it until it is further researched. But just the possiblity of such a gene existing should make you think. But i forget, you're an egocentric American who can't see beyond your own perspective...

53. darkstar writes:

You'd take every chance you get to take a jab at my country, wouldn't you?

Even if there isn't a single gene that causes homosexuality, there are many other factors that could cause someone to be more attracted to the same sex, some of which may be genetic (others environmental). There are many instances in which homosexual men differ biologically from heterosexual men. First off, their brain cell clusters are found to be significantly smaller, while the fibers connecting the right and left hemispheres are a third larger in comparison to straight guys. Furthermore, genes code for prenatal hormones, which can alter sexual orientation. Fetuses exposed to abnormal levels of these hormones tend to be attracted to the same sex later in life. Fingerprints of gay men have been found to be more similar to women than to straight men, a difference that may also be due to prenatal hormones. And haven't you ever noticed that butches are anatomically more similar to men that to women? Genes may come into play here too. A study of twins show that 52% of gay men and 48% of gay women have identical twins who were also gay - again, perhaps due to genes. Scientists have been able to cause fruit flies to display homosexual behaviour with a single transplanted gene. And yes, I don't believe that they should toy with genetics like that, the results do seem pretty significant. People aren't purposely playing with people's chromosomes to cause attraction to the same sex. Homosexuality dates back to ancient times, before anyone knew anything about DNA.

Even though not every one of the findings may be true, I think at least some of them have to be true, enough for me to view biology as one of the factors influencing sexual orientation anyway. In science, NOTHING is ever accepted. There's always a small percentage (usually 5%) that the results may be due to chance. Almost everything can be disproved. There are lots of experiments that aren't being published in journals because their results may not be significant or if the scientists found no results.

It's not impossible for same-sex couples to have kids. Just because they're homosexual doesn't mean they're sterile. All you need is a sperm and an egg. One alternative to sex is sticking the sex cells together in vitro, shove the fertilized egg in an surrogate mother and 9 months later you'll have a test-tube baby.

Anway, I'd argue with you further but I've got a sh**load of work to do. By the way, have you ever seen a scenester guy? They look like women even though they're really not gay.

i don't mind if they have kids!! and i know how it works too!! you go and get donated sperm from a sperm bank and you go have in vitro fertilization done! i'm not an idiot.
and you get a test tube baby quicker than that, when the sperm meets the egg is when you get it. they're just fertilized in a test tube! big deal! heterosexual couples get it done all the time.

and how would all those gay people feel if their little world was disintigrated by an atomic weapon!!??!!!?!?!?!!?! that is why we went to war!! to stop the threat!! saddam was a threat. he was a threat to us, he was a threat to his own people, he was a threat to the whole damn world. we went to war to keep our freedoms. and if you want to take advantage of those freedoms, go ahead, you're an american. but remember, its wars and fights against tyranny that gave you those freedoms!

oh yeah, did you know that japan is twenty years further in genetics than any other country and they have not discovered this "gay gene" thing yet!!? i'm sure they would have found it years ago.

and i'm not an "egocentric american", that role belongs to the supreme a$$holes that lives in our country, like Sen. John Kerry, Sen. Ted Kennedy, and Mr. Michael Moore. Moore can't stop spewing propaganda! it just oozes from his idiotic mind. John Kerry is a sore loser and can't deal with the fact that he lost, and Ted Kennedy is just a drunk old fart who let some poor girl die. but when any of them talk, it's all aobut themselves. the reason kerry didn't get elected is because he isn't a family man. he's on his third marriage and know one knows anything about any of his children and his wife is a foreign loudmouth who doesn't even live with him or like this country!!

if people knew something about him personally, they would know how he deals with his family. Everyone knows about the lives of Bush and his family. his daughters go to Yale and UT. even knowing where they go to school gives the american people an idea about the candidate and how he deals with things personally.

Just because Japan is twenty years ahead in genetics doesn't mean they should've have already found the gene. Maybe it'll take them thirty years. Whatever. And I never said you were an idiot. I don't know where you go that from.

What's it to you if people want to marry the same sex? Shouldn't everbody on this planet, minority or not, have the right and freedom to marry whomever they choose, regardless of gender? If it's not causing you any harm or whatever, why are you so against it? And come on, marrying salad forks and can openers is a rather irrational, hypothetical reason to be against gay marriage. You're comparing human beings to inanimate objects. A gene consisting of the colour pink? That's just stereotyping.

No, you're not egocentric, just patriotic. But you don't have to put down other countries just to praise yours.

scaring me away? haha! wow. im totally amused by that. i'm sorry that i actually have a life outside of cyberspace and couldn't get back to your insults...but wait, why should i be apologizing? you're the pathetic ones who seem to think you know everything.

first off, props to brad for actually seeing history in its correct form. now that's a real American.

you are calling me egocentric? ME? HA! do you even know what the term 'egocentric' means? i was just laying out different views on the various issues so that you could broaden your perspectives, but clearly, you didn't or are incapable of doing so. Never once did i say that those ideas i laid out were my own beliefs. They were merely just other possible directions of argument.

I'm sorry your brain could not perceive them as such.

I always thought marriage was a binding relationship between two people. I don't recall it being sex-specific. If you want to go marry a can-opener, that's your business. I'm not going to judge you. However, you cannot compare a can-opener (object) with a person. They are two seperate entities in themselves.

what is this crap about gay people's children being atomic weapons? where the hell did that come from? i don't understand your logic at all. i think you should be a bit more educated on your topics before you try to come up with logical reasoning. As for the whole Saddam Hussein and threat thing, as i recall, Bush's attacking-spree began with Bin Laden, and then went on to Saddam. Who's next, huh? Is he planning on wiping out the entire nation because of falsifications ? Where is the proof to all of these alleged threats? You bring me proof and maybe i'll consider thinking about where you're coming from.

The whole research thing takes time. People discover genes after years and years of research. It's not something you uncover overnight. Have you not heard of the possibility of there being a gene for language? Obviously more research needs to be conducted in this field as well, but 20 years ago, no one would have ever thunk of such a possibility. You seem like the type of person who demands instant results. I'm sorry to disappoint you, but the world (or life in general) doesn't work that way!

And man, i almost fell out of my chair laughing when i read your justifications for why Bush was the "better" person to elect. Because he's in the public's eye? Because his children (who could be drug addicts for all we know) are university students and have been on camera? How can you justify knowing how Bush deals with things personally? You don't even know the man, for crying out loud! You just know what you see in the media. And who said that everything in the media was true? You can't believe everything you see on tv....cuz that would make cartoons real.

Just because Kerry is on his third marriage doesn't make him a worse man than Bush. Your reasoning is absurd!

" Moore can't stop spewing propaganda! it just oozes from his idiotic mind. John Kerry is a sore loser and can't deal with the fact that he lost, and Ted Kennedy is just a drunk old fart who let some poor girl die. but when any of them talk, it's all aobut themselves." HAHAHA. .... you amuse me. What kind of logic is that? OOOH don't elect Moore, he's all about propoganda. OOOH don't elect Kerry..he's a sore loser! hahaha....

Maybe you should take the time to research the past candidates' history before you go on judging everyone and rationalizing Bush as being better of them all.

I have to say, i disagree with Darkstar. You are totally egocentric. And your extreme, radical patriarchy doesn't help. I think the two go hand in hand.

Go ahead and take jabs at 'scaring me away' kids.... you'll fail. I don't scare that easily. And especially not with people who are unable to rationalize properly.

This actually really amuses me.

i was making a comparison betweeen the fact that everyone (well, not everyone, but most) in the minorities are anitwar. including gays. and they go out and yell about it. but they don't realize THAT WIThOUT THIS AND EVERY DAMN WAR THE U.S. FOUGHT CAME YOUR FREEDOMS! Why try to support a backwards cause if they're going to take your freedoms away? this is why we went into Iraq. to help the people get back their freedoms.

and i have heard many things about many genes. i wonder where you get your info from?

and how do you know that i don't know the president? i could be an adviser or even a press secretary and you don't know that.

and those weren't MY justifications! those were basically the reasons why Bush got reelected.

scaring you? i never said anything about that, that was MarineChick's deal.

now see, that's the problem, i can't research anything on john kerry because they don't have sites about that! he's mr. secret and all we hear about is VIETNAM!! VIETNAM!!! that happened over thirty years ago and he can't stop talking about what a "war hero" he was. that's right, he called himself a war hero and has based his entire campaign around that. he's not a war hero. war heroes are the ones who lost their lives over every war we have fought. that's a helluva a lot of people who let their lives go for this country and your freedoms. but i digress, can you explain how Kerry got three purple hearts in 2 months?

you want a example of "stupid marriages" a person and their cat or dog. it will happen. some freak will come along and think her dead husband was reincarnated into her new dog and she'll want to marry it. THIS WILL HAPPEN! i'm not saying that gays shouldn't have relationships, i'm saying that, when you ask for a freedom, you start asking too much and the majority never rules here because everyone goes out of their way for minorities. the gays, the illegal aliens, the liberal flaghaters, etc. if they want gay marriage to be legal that bad, move to a country that has gay marriage. don't bother here, it takes to long. they're still working on laws from 1979!!

and michael moore is an ass. he's even ashamed of his own party!

i'm not a futureseer, but i see that somehow, some time in the next or maybe the election after that. no one is going to like either the republican or democratic candidates and in a landslide victory, Ralph Nader wins the presidency!!

MarineChick, pretty much everyone not born American were trained to hate Americans. I mean, people don't like having their countries dissed. Personally, I have nothing against Americans. I rather like you guys. But I'm just sick of having to put up with condescending Americans thinking that they're so much better than the rest of the world. I'm not saying all Americans do it, just some of them.

I get my info from credible journal articles and textbooks. I don't pull them out of thin air. Anyway, the whole point of this whole genetics discussion is to back up my story that homosexuality is natural. Attraction to others is not synthetic. And we're still talking about marriage to another human being, not to animals or inanimate objects. We'll worry about those marriages when the time comes.

I don't really know what the gov't is like there. But from what my dad tells me, they sound horribly corrupt. the chinese government also kills off many baby girls because they want boys(for their military) and because of the population boom, they only allow each couple to have one child. if the couple has more than one child, the second child and sometimes the mother are killed for it.
