Defiance Sign With Corporate Punishment Records
Oakland, California thrashers DEFIANCE, best known for their seminal late '80s/early '90s Roadrunner releases "Void Terra Firma" and "Beyond Recognition", have inked a deal with Los Angeles-based Corporate Punishment Records. The group will enter Trident Studios in Concord, CA with producer Juan Urteaga (EXODUS, SKINLAB, VILE) this summer to begin work on their fourth album, tentatively due before the end of the year. Upon completion of the LP, the band is looking forward to playing selected shows and festivals. In addition to the new LP, Corporate Punishment Records will also release the band's first long-form DVD, "Decade(s) of Defiance", compiling hours of live performance, interview and archival footage chronicling their nearly 20 years of existence
Part of the so-called “second wave” of Bay Area thrash (which also included the likes of FORBIDDEN, VIO-LENCE, DEATH ANGEL, and TESTAMENT), DEFIANCE officially disbanded in 1993 after the departure of vocalist Steev Esquivel (who would go on to form SKINLAB, and later RE:IGNITION), while the remaining members, with the addition of vocalist Dave Godfrey White (HEATHEN), formed INNER THRESHOLD, which would also eventually disband.
In 2005, rumors of a reformed DEFIANCE sent waves of interest through the burgeoning thrash metal community, until it was finally confirmed that the band had in fact reunited and were at work on their first new material in over a decade.
"I'm really stoked to be playing with DEFIANCE again," says guitarist Jim Adams. "We have been working on some new songs and ideas that are really heavy and complex. We are not moving away from the Bay Area thrash style that people will expect to hear from us, no detuning or anything like that. We are writing pure straight forward thrash metal." Bassist/founder Mike Kauffman adds, "We've been working hard at writing new songs and we're all looking forward to working with Corporate Punishment. We hold ourselves to a very high standard when it comes to songwriting and I'm sure our fans will not be disappointed."
In addition to the classic lineup of Doug Harrington (guitar), Jim Adams (guitar), Mike Kaufmann (bass) and vocalist Steev Esquivel, the LP will also feature ex-VIO-LENCE/TORQUE drummer Mark Hernandez.
Re:Ignition Recording Debut Album
RE:IGNITION guitarist Steev Esquivel (also of SKINLAB) has issued the following update:
"We are currently recording our debut album, 'Empty Heart Loaded Gun'. Things have been going great! With drums having been complete for a while now, things are starting to take shape. Snake [also guitarist in SKINLAB] is nearly complete with all 14 songs. The bass tones he and Kent Matcke [METALLICA, STABBING WESTWARD] have gotten are just phenomenal! Snake has really taken the time to focus on his bass tone — as well as technique...can you say BULLFRog, ohhh, yeah!
"Guitars have been coming along too. We've spent the better part getting tones, trying out different amp combinations and dealing with sneaky Mexican radio feedback, haha, when trying to split the amps! We've since taken care of all that and have been moving forward with guitar-tracking, which by the way is coming out slammin'! Tim [Howell; ex-FUELED, SACRILEGE B.C.] and I have really done our homework and are coming in the most prepared we've ever been. The guitar tones are sounding great, just straight-up heavy as hell! Dave [Moore; ex-MINDBENDER) will be coming in next week to begin tracking his guitars as well as getting started on vocals.... YES!!
"We can't wait to get this album done and share it with everyone. People are gonna be surprised by this record, straight up! Some cool label announcements coming
soon... daaaaang, we're so close, I can taste it.
"Oh yeah, come check us out January 13 with our buds THE MERCY CLINIC and DECONSTRUCT at The Pheonix Theatre, Petaluma. Also January 31st at House Of Blues (more details TBA)."
The Ghost Next Door Post Live Video Online
THE GHOST NEXT DOOR, the new band featuring guitarist Gary Wendt (ex-SKINLAB, RELEASE, SACRILEGE B.C.) on guitar/vocals, have posted a new 10-minute downloadable video of the group playing two unrecorded songs ("Forever My Demon" and "Crickets") live in Los Angeles at the Dragonfly. You can check it out at this location.
The trio, whose lineup is rounded out by Seanan Gridley on bass and Sean Haeberman on drums, are in the process of recording new material which they hope to have completed by mid-to-late November.
RE:Ignition Set to Enter the Studio
SKINLAB and RE:IGNITION mainman Steev Esquivel has offered an update on the bands current schedule:
"Hey there everyone, sorry about the lack of updates lately. We've all been hard at work writting new material and getting ready to hit the studio once again to record some more tunes. This time we're set to record with multi-platinum producer Sylvia Massy (TOOL, SEVENDUST, SYSTEM OF A DOWN) at her killer studio RadioStarStudios in Weed Ca. starting January 6th. We're honored to be able to work with Sylvia, she's been apart of some of our favorite records and have no doubt she'll be bringing out the best of RE:IGNITION. We'll keep you all posted."
The Bay Area group have just one show lined up this December:

Steev of Skinlab Set To Do Exodus Vocals on Tour
Following the firing of Exodus vocalist Steve "Zetro" Souza and the subsequent addition of Exodus to the Megadeth tour (replacing 12 Stones), it appears Steev Esquivel of SKINLAB / RE:IGNITION will be handling all vocal duties for the Bay Area's EXODUS on the bands forthcoming tour in support of MEGADETH. Also appearing on the bill with EXODUS will be nu-rockers EARSHOT.
Exodus To Open For Megadeth
Bay Area Thrash legend Exodus has been confirmed to play six US-shows together with Megadeth! Check out the dates here.
As singer Steve "Zetro" Souza left the band about one month ago, Skinlab singer Steev Esquivel will help out Exodus on vocals.
Exodus Postpone South American Tour
There are two reports circulating regarding Exodus' postponement of their South American tour. The first is diplomatic and comes from Nuclear Blast Records:
As recently released Exodus have had quite a major line-up change with the firing of lead singer, Steve “Zetro” Souza and due to complications with replacement singers Exodus have had no choice but to postpone the current dates until they can return to South America in late October with touring singer, Steve Esquivel, of Skinlab.
Top Link Productions did a phenomenal job creating a successful tour for Exodus fulfilling all of their obligations and providing the band with a great run of dates. Therefore Exodus would like to extend their deepest apologies to Top Link Productions, local promoters, booking agents and all Exodus fans planning to attend.
Please keep checking Exodus' website www.ExodusAttack.com for the rescheduled dates. Below are the dates that are currently postponed.
09/17 - Buenos Aires / Argentina - Replica Cromañon
09/18 - São Paulo / Brazil - Via Funchal (Bonded By Blood Thrash Fest)
09/19 - Recife / Brazil - Clube Internacional do Recife
09/24 - Ribeirão Preto / Brazil – Apoteose
09/25 - Belo Horizonte / Brazil - Lapa Multishow
The second statement comes from the band itself and is as follows:
The tour has ben postponed until October due to the fact that John Miller is an insane idiot and had one of his mental breakdowns the day before we were to leave. We knew he has a history of this kind of shit but we never knew it would happen this quickly. It usually takes him longer to shoot himself in the foot. It had nothing to do with Zetro not going. All shows were on until John self-destructed. I will be updating everyone soon on the details of the South American tour. But please don't blame the promoters, there were just too many changes to make to try to pull this off and we had no intention of going down there and embarassing ourselves with John Miller, so my apologies to our fans in South America. We will return soon.
