Irate Interviews and Features
Below are our features and interviews with Irate.
Project Independent has had an incredible year. Headed by CEO Jeff Totten, the National Band Search Program has recently nailed down a new distribution deal with Century Media Records. This is a major victory for the underground scene because this will allow the next Project Independent compilation CD comprised of top unsigned U.S. metal acts to finally reach the masses and yet not sacrifice the original appeal of its grass roots approach: to find the best of the best burgeoning talents working hard to make a name for themselves directly out of the hottest club venues in cities from coast to coast . I recently conducted this roundtable interview with Jeff Totten himself, along with Florida area promoter J-Rock of The Rock Solid Pressure Showcase, Erik Ulrich of I.R.A.T.E, Greg Bowman of Level Nine Entertainment and Rick of the Texas-based thrash metal band Grain to get a deeper perspective from all of these forces involved on the good, the bad and the ugly of this impressive band search program. Los Angeles, California's hardcore metal act I.R.A.T.E. has seen more than its fair share of adversity this year, including a name ownership battle with NYC counterparts who seemed to want to see this band crash and burn under outrageous 'character assassination' attempts and even literal 'death threats', yet still managing to even hold its own against the other enemy that needs to be worried about: a stiff wall of competition coming from countless hordes of other upcoming rock acts making their rounds on the most famous music scene of them all, Hollywood's Sunset Strip. Sure, this band has been touring the lights out across this great nation of ours with The Project Independent Tour and doing a great job at making friends and fans with their music from one city to the next, but I think what is most compelling about I.R.A.T.E. is their abiity to take all the good and bad in stride and never forget what they intended to be in the first place, a powerful and important rock n roll band. I got a chance inbetween the band's recent touring break to conduct a fresh round of Q&A with their always entertaining frontman, Erik Ulrich. More...
There's been so much drama going on lately in relation to I.R.A.T.E. (Infinite Rebellion Against The Establishment) from Los Angeles, who have recently concluded their 30 date Project Independent Tour, that I wanted to take a different route and have some fun with the bandmates and their manager, Jeff Totten of Celestial Entertainment, by conducting a basic follow-up with them. The very first Project Independent release "Brothers of The Same Struggle", for which I have written a review on here at the almighty metalunderground.com, is currently available at your local Tower Records music store. Fans of Century Media may also order through their catalog. More...
For those that have been following this metal news site over the last couple of months, you are surely to be aware of the controversial band name ownership dispute that has been raging between New York's long standing hardcore act Irate and California's I.R.A.T.E., who are skillfully managed by Jeff Totten of Celestial Entertainment for Project Independent. In my last interview, I gave NYC Irate a more than fair opportunity to speak their case before all of us and handle this heated situation in a civil manner, for their have even been threats of violence made against the west coast I.R.A.T.E., prompting the FBI to be informed of the escalating matter. I feel it is only right now to give Mr. Totten a chance to follow-up to what was said by NYC Irate, in concern with the overall debate. I personally think this is a strong lesson in the way the music business works and not how we want it to work for us. More...
There's been a bit of an ongoing verbal war between the infamous hardcore thrash metal act from Bronx, New York called Irate and the west coast I.R.A.T.E. - over the ownership of well, the Irate group moniker. My past interview with Erik Ulrich of the latter mentioned I.R.A.T.E. - who are currently travelling across the country with The Project Independent Tour - stirred up literal blood dripping over the curbs into the streets from the anger and frustration expressed by the New York Irate's devoted legion of fans. I wanted to be fair and give both sides a chance to tell their story. Jeff Totten of Project Independent has already spoken on his band's behalf in concern with this over-heated issue and now I give that opportunity to the other Irate and hopefully we can finally bury this battle six feet under. I personally thank Nando and Nick from NYC Irate for being real standup and giving me the honor of discussing not just the name ownership situation - but also giving all of us true metalers a bit more history of their band and what is to come from them as they move forward in life. I respect both sides, for I am merely a rock journalist who loves metal music and at the end of the day on all of this, I hope that's what we walk away talking about: music not destruction. Maybe the White house could learn a thing or two from this themselves.
