Hevein Seeking New Practice Space

Finnish metal band Hevein updates that they are in search of a new practice space in Helsinki, Finland for the eighth time, as the building they are currently in will be demolished at the end of the year. If you can help them in anyway find a new pad please contact: band (at) hevein.com.

The band posted a seemingly sarcastic-ridden update on the matter:

"As is in many capitalist countries rent is very very very very very cheap. Here in Helsinki there is an abundance of large, well ventilated, cheap, secure, soundproof rooms (with windows) for rent. Rooms that don't have water driping down the walls like a fucking waterfall when it rains or shoddy electricity or 10 other bands crammed in like dolphins being slaughtered in a Taiji cove, some of them secretly using and sometimes breaking your stuff and not paying for it or grannies complaining to the filth their windows resonate from your music even when they live in a different suburb of town or an entire ocean of garbage and half empty beer bottles turned into makeshift ashtrays that you accidently drink out of. These places all have clean toilets and there is never anything growing on the walls or ceiling. Yes sir... it's that easy."

Heavin Posts New Demo Online for Streaming

Hevein has relaunched their website and posted their new "Gentle Anarchy" demo that they have been working on for the past five years online for streaming.

The band comments on the new demo: "As you will hear this (if you listen to the songs) is a very different band from the 1st album. It is at times quite brutal and is the heaviest we have to offer. Due to some form of democracy some of the lighter tracks were left off this demo but you'll hear them sooner or later."

You can also stream their first album, "Sound Over Matter," in it's entirety here.

Unearthing the Violin and Cello Metal Underground

In 1996, Apocalyptica released their debut studio album, "Plays Metallica by Four Cellos," and the metal world would never again view cellos the same way. Apocalptica was no one-trick pony, however. They upped the ante and quality massively on "Inquisition Symphony" and branched out to cover other metal bands plus three original compositions. By their third album, the band was producing primarily original material, still heavy and still on four cellos.

While Apocalyptica has since broken out of the underground, it took them years to do so even while piggybacking on the success of metal gods like Metallica, finally securing a decent North American record deal and touring the U.S. after they had four albums under their belt. Yet, their success has opened doors to more classically trained musicians to explore the heavier side of their instruments and contribute to the heavy metal community in their own ways. If Apocalyptica did not start by covering Metallica, one might wonder how heavy a band of celloists could possibly sound. Not only do they pull it off in the studio, but they put on a live performance that rivals that of their idols.

Today I will introduce you to three underground bands that employ extensive use of bowed instruments, primarily the cello and violin. Not only does the inclusion of these instruments give the music a unique feel, but the musicians themselves being more classically trained has its own impact on the compositions as well. Let's get started: More...

Hevein In Pre-Production Mode

Finnish metal band HEVEIN has issued the following update:

"We're happy to announce that pre-production is going well for the second album. We have been recording riffs, lyrics and stuff on a small voice recorder just to get a feel for the upcoming album and now have around 20 songs waiting to be dissected. So now we are moving on to the next stage of recording proper demos at our rehearsal studio. The material is a mix of heavy songs and atmospheric ones. Quite like the first album, only better. We are all looking forward to playing these songs live."

HEVEIN's latest album, "Sound Over Matter", is out on Candlelight Records.
