When rock fans think of Syracuse -- one of the cities in upstate New York -- they often think of hardcore punk and the straight-edge movement, which has used punk to promote clean living, vegetarianism, and spirituality. Many straight-edge bands have been avid supporters of the Hare Krishna sect; arguably, straight-edge has often functioned as a Hindu-minded equivalent of Christian rock, although many straight-edge bands have leaned to the left politically and have, in some cases, vehemently lambasted Christian pop and rock artists who supported the Republican Party. Despite Syracuse's reputation as a punk/straight-edge town, not every band that came from that area in the '90s or 2000s had a straight-edge connection. Syracuse metal band Brand New Sin has nothing at all to do with straight-edge; if anything, these rowdy, long-haired, tattooed, decadent, hell-raising headbangers sound like they are rebelling against everything that Syracuse's straight-edge scene has stood for. Kris Wiechmann, one of the band's three guitarists, showed how politically incorrect he could be when he equated Brand New Sin's self-titled debut album with "the first drink an alcoholic takes after walking out of rehab," which isn't exactly the sort of thing a straight-edge vegetarian teetotaler would brag about. Blistering and forceful yet consistently melodic, Brand New Sin has been influenced by a variety of metal and hard rock bands, and those influences range from Motörhead, Black Sabbath, and Guns N' Roses to Pantera and Metallica. There are also traces of Lynyrd Skynyrd and Southern rock in the band's material, which has the sort of bluesy, swampy edge that southern outfits like Alabama Thunder Pussy and Hammerlock have brought to alternative metal. Although Brand New Sin has plenty of '70s and '80s influences, the band has enough of a Corrosion of Conformity/Down influence to avoid sounding flat-out retro and be relevant to the '90s/2000s alternative metal scene. However, Brand New Sin doesn't get into rap-metal at all -- the Syracuse headbangers show no awareness of hip-hop-minded nu metal bands like Limp Bizkit, Korn, (hed)pe, Fat, Rage Against the Machine, and Tommy Lee's Methods of Mayhem. In the '90s, some of Brand New Sin's members belonged to a Syracuse band called Godbelow, which favored a metal/punk blend. But when they wanted to do something different -- something with more bluesy, swampy leanings and a southern influence -- Brand New Sin was born in the early 2000s. While other metal bands had four or five members, Brand New Sin had six thanks to a lineup that consisted of lead singer Joe Altier, bassist Chuck Kahl, drummer Mike Rafferty, and no less than three guitarists: Slider (who also provides background vocals), Kris Wiechmann, and Ken Dunham. In June 2002, Brand New Sin's self-titled debut album (which Peter Walker produced) was released by the Jersey City, NJ-based Now or Never Records. A year later, drummer Kevin Dean was added to the band. Brand New Sin once again joined Walker for the recording of their second album. The Black and Blue EP and the band's sophomore effort, Recipe for Disaster, were both released in 2005. Alex Henderson, All Music

Brand New Sin Return, Post New Music Online

New York quintet BRAND NEW SIN have returned with a voracious hard rock assault laden with soaring, captivating melodies and crushing anthems that are sure to get anyone’s blood flowing and fists pumping. This highly anticipated new offering, Tequila, will further establish them as one of rock’s premiere tandems, a testament backed perfectly by the track “Motormeth,” which can be streamed at the link below. Tequila is set for an October 3rd release. http://mp3.centurymedia.com/brandnewsin/tequila/brandnewsin_motormeth.mp3

Joe Altier (vocals) further describes what “Motormeth” is all about: “The inspiration behind ‘Motormeth’ was to create a song that hits you in the face and just keeps going. It’s BRAND NEW SIN through and through. The song is based on the people in your life that push you to your absolute brink of anger and then reap what they sow. It fits perfectly on our new album, Tequila, which perfectly captures our raw energy. Hopefully, everyone finds the new tunes as ‘intoxicating’ as we do. We feel that a lot of bands nowadays make things sound too polished, and we have been told for years that our albums are good but our live shows are much better, so that's what we went for. See ya soon.”

Brand New Sin Announce Name Of New Album

New York quintet BRAND NEW SIN have returned with a voracious hard rock assault laden with soaring, captivating melodies and crushing anthems that are sure to get anyone’s blood flowing and fists pumping. This highly anticipated new offering, "Tequila", will also further establish them as one of rock’s premiere tandems. The album is set for an October 3 release.

Soon after completing a six-week nationwide tour as direct support to Black Label Society last fall, BRAND NEW SIN entered Method of Groove studios in Brooklyn with producer Joey Z (Life of Agony, Stereomud) to begin tracking "Tequila". They’ve emerged with an album sure to stand the test of time. The disc, mastered by the acclaimed George Marino (Metallica, AC/DC, Guns N' Roses) at Sterling Sound, also features a guest vocal appearance by Peter Steele (Type O Negative) on the track “Reaper Man” and is the perfect representation of what this group is ultimately capable of creating.

The group also recently recorded a new version of the entrance theme music for Big Show, the 7-foot, 500-pound ECW wrestler. The theme, "Crank It Up," was first heard on the compilation CD WWE: Wreckless Intent, which debuted at #8 on the Billboard charts.

Joe Altier (vocals) checks in with the following report:

“The album is now complete. We recorded this album live as a band, and we think it perfectly captures our raw energy. Hopefully, everyone finds the new tunes as ‘intoxicating’ as we do. We feel that a lot of bands nowadays make things sound too polished, and we have been told for years that our albums are good but our live shows are much better, so that's what we went for. BRAND NEW SIN’s "Tequila" will prove authentic, meat-and-potatoes classic hard rock is chased with an undeniable raw fury that refuses to be denied.

Brand New Sin Begin Writing For New Album

Century Media Records report that BRAND NEW SIN are in full songwriting mode for the follow-up to their Recipe For Disaster album.

Joe Altier (vocals) checks in with the following report: “I want to thank everyone for 2005. We got to tour with Motorhead, COC, LOA, BLS, and make good friends with all the guys in Mercy Clinic, Bloodsimple, Scum Of The Earth, Society 1, Dog Faced Gods. I want to thank my band mates, crew and our families for once again being there for me (us) thru everything, all the extended sin family for housing us, getting us drunk, and plain just making us feel at home wherever we go. We will continue to make music, so hopefully you will keep coming out to see us.

“The main focus right now is writing the follow up to Recipe For Disaster. We will hopefully be recording this spring and the boys and me are hard at work once again 5 nights a week hammering out some new tunes. We will spend the next two months writing and demoing new material. We are very excited! I promise to keep everyone updated on the progress and news about this in the coming weeks. And as the hometown show goers know this record is being fueled by Tequila so you better watch out.”

In other news, Brand New Sin will headline at Gatherings in Phoenix, NY on February 10th. The band’s video for the track ‘Days Are Numbered’ can currently be seen at this location.

Brand New Sin Added To Black Label Society Tour

Syracuse-based hard rock quintet Brand New Sin have just secured the direct support slot on the upcoming Black Label Society tour, which kicks off in St. Petersburg, Fla. on Oct. 14. This five-week, major market trek will coincide with the release of their new video for upcoming single “Days Are Numbered,” shot by acclaimed director Dale Resteghini (Shadows Fall, Hatebreed).

Brand New Sin, who recently headlined the Syracruise bike rally (“Central New York’s largest annual motorcycle event”) in their hometown, are no strangers to Black Label Society, who are currently playing to thousands of fans each night on the main stage of Ozzfest. The group played nine shows with Zakk Wylde’s band of SDMF’s three years ago in support of their self-titled debut, including an infamous Detroit gig at which Black Label Society filmed its first live DVD - a show at which the crowd depleted the venue’s entire beer supply.

“We’re happy to be going back out with Black Label,” says Brand New Sin front man Joe Altier. “The last time around, we were out for only two weeks. Our bands fit perfectly together, and this is a great chance for us to take it around the entire country.”

Brand New Sin is currently headlining the Revolver magazine-sponsored Summer of Rock tour alongside Dog Faced Gods and Supagroup in support of Recipe For Disaster, their critically acclaimed new album. The tour will be followed by a short trek with Life of Agony, who are currently headlining the Gigantour second stage. Meanwhile, their video for lead Recipe single “Black And Blue,” also shot by Resteghini, is currently in heavy rotation on Metal Asylum and Headbangers Ball; it has also been posted online at this location.
