Ascend Announce New Release

ASCEND is a new collaborative musical project between Gentry Densley (Iceburn, Eagle Twin) and Greg Anderson (sunn 0))), Goatsnake, Engine Kid). Both have been making music that has crossed paths several times in the last 19 years, the most notable being during the 90s when Anderson's band Engine Kid toured with and shared a split album with Densely’s band Iceburn. During that time both were heavily experimenting with the fusion of jazz (Mahavishnu Orchestra, Miles Davis, John Coltrane) and the dark behemoth tones of influences such as The Melvins, Gore, Slint, and Caspar Brotzman.

Hitting stores on May 27th, ASCEND re-visits some of the tones and moods of their past works as well as traveling into uncharted territory all done with the utmost focus on heaviness and power, with the album "Ample Fire Within." Of particular note is the vocal performance by Gentry Densley. His voice is deep and ominous with a subtle Tom Waits influence within the growls and gruffness that is emoted. Anderson gushes enthusiastically: "we were extremely fortunate to have a lot of help from our friends with this recording. Andy Patterson pounded the hell out of the drums, and Steve Moore (aka Stebmo, also in Earth and often times sunn 0))) ) added some trombone (“Obelisk of Kolob”, and “Dark Matter”), organ (“Her Horse Is Thunder”, “Dark Matter”) and some amazing wurlitzer (“Amplifier Within”, “Divine”). His playing brings a dark, sophisticated jazz atmosphere to the album. On the track "V O G" we were blessed to have Bubba Dupree (Void) AND none other than Kim Thayil (Soundgarden) put down some incredible lead work!"

The entire album was mixed by Randall Dunn (Earth, sunn 0))), Kinski,) and mastered by Mell Dettmer who is turning into the "house-mastering wizardress" for the Southern Lord label.

Below are a few samples from the album:

Maniac's Skitliv To Release Special Edition MCD

SKITLIV, the band formed and fronted by former MAYHEM vocalist Maniac, and featuring SHINING’s Niklas Kvarforth on guitars, is releasing two special editions on the UK Label Cold Spring. The CD version, due out at the end of February, comprises two studio tracks; one a special mix of “Slow Pain Coming” exclusive to Cold Spring, and the other, a version of “Amfetamin”, with guest vocals by current MAYHEM and SUNN0))) front man Attila, and includes bonus tracks from the band’s recent live performance at the Camden Underworld, London. Following later will be a limited 12” etched edition.

The release illustrates the subtle shift away from the narrow confines of Black Metal that Maniac has taken recently, expanding into the realms of the Doom/Noise genre whilst still maintaining his original roots. His cooperation with Current 93’s David Tibet and Andrew Liles is also highlighted in the intro to the live performance that was recorded by the two musicians especially for SKITLIV. The Tibet/Liles recording used for live performances differs from the version that they recorded as an intro for the “Kristiansen and Kvarforth Swim In The Sea of Equilibrium While Waiting…” MCD that was recently released by the band for their European tour.

Maniac commented “Justin of Cold Spring has been a friend for a long time now, and we have always talked about doing a one-off project together, but you know how it goes, you tend to get side-tracked by other things, or the time is not right for one or the other. Then he came up with the idea of the etched vinyl that was something that really appealed to everyone involved. It also came at the right moment in terms of us all having a free window at the same time, so we were able to re-record and re-mix a couple of tracks especially for him in between recording the MCD and preparing for the tour”.

You can check out a song from the MCD on the band’s MySpace page.

Celtic Frost To Appear On HBB This Weekend

Swiss metal band CELTIC FROST will be appearing on MTV2's "Headbanger's Ball" on Saturday, September 30. The segment was taped when FROST played in New York City earlier this month. The show will also mark the "Headbanger's Ball" premier of the video for "A Dying God Coming Into Human Flesh", taken from their 2006 release "Monotheist".

"The tour and the audience's reactions have far exceeded all of our expectations," said bassist Martin Eric Ain, checking in from Calgary. "We have worked very hard to bring the FROST back, and the support of the people we have met so far during these shows has made it more than worthwhile. We are one-third into this tour, and we'd like to think there is much more to come and that we have much more to give."

Currently 14 shows into their 47-date North American tour, the band will perform Victoria, Canada Saturday night. On October 3, the band will be joined by SUNN O))) and GOATWHORE, replacing current supporting artists 1349 and SAHG.

Khanate Calls It Quits

"Extreme doom" metal band KHANATE, the brainchild of Stephen O'Malley (THORR'S HAMMER, BURNING WITCH, SUNN 0))), LOTUS EATERS) and James Plotkin (OLD, SCORN, ATOMSMASHER), has disbanded. In a statement, Plotkin writes, "I have decided to leave KHANATE due to the lack of commitment of certain members. The decision was a difficult one, as I've put six years and immeasurable amounts of creativity into the band hoping to take it as far as possible. The past year has brought about many missed opportunities and the realization that some players are more concerned with personal careers and day jobs rather than the advancement of music as an artform.

"I will continue to work with drummer Tim Wyskida on a number of other projects, mainly KHLYST and our improvisational duo.

"Gratitude to all those that have supported what we have done and acknowledged our importance in modern music.

"The companion album to 'Capture & Release' is currently being mixed. This yet untitled work consists of spontaneous recordings made during the 'C&R' sessions dating back to February 2005. This will be my final work in KHANATE. There are plans for Japanese issues of the self-titled and 'Things Viral' CDs with expanded packaging and bonus discs with unreleased material."

The Rise of Art-Metal

Jon Caramanica has written a surprisingly excellent article in the New York Times about the shift in metal and the rise of "art metal" and "post metal," the latter label I dislike more than the first. Here's an except to get you started:

You might not have known it from looking at the audience, but when the Chicago instrumental band Pelican performed at the Knitting Factory in late July, it was playing metal.

Instead of long hair and all-black outfits, the crowd was displaying the trappings of brainy, slightly nerdy indie rock. Young men wore artistically cropped hair and tight-legged jeans, and there was even a smattering of young women in librarian glasses and worn-out Chuck Taylor sneakers.

This is not your older brother's metal crowd. "I've been wearing my Def Leppard T-shirt on tour recently," said Laurent Lebec, a guitarist in Pelican and a fan of that archteypal 1980's metal band. "People come up to me and ask, 'Is that a joke?' I have to tell them that I don't wear T-shirts as a joke."

The particularly dark and aggressive strain of rock called heavy metal has been around for more than three decades. In that time, it has spawned a range of offshoots, but none have been as unlikely as the recent wave of bands using metal as a jumping-off point for a range of experimental styles, dabbling in free jazz, minimalist post-rock, noise and even modern classical music.

This is art-metal, a curious scene populated by a new generation of metal acolytes onstage and younger fans often unfamiliar with metal's headbanger heritage.

"Metal in general has long been unjustly maligned as solely the province of knuckle-dragging meatheads," said Aaron Turner, a founder of the influential Hydra Head Records, which has released three CD's by Pelican, including, recently, "The Fire in Our Throats Will Beckon the Thaw." "That said, there's never been a group of musicians like there is now, who are helping to advance the form."
