Behold...The Arctopus Update On Side Projects

Guitarists Mike Lerner and Colin Marston appeared in the holiday issue of Guitar One Magazine and are play and sans-drums version of Alcoholocaust on the cd-rom that comes with the current issue.

Drummer Charlie Zeleny is going to Japan from February 4-12 to play duo with Jordan Rudess, keyboardist of Dream Theater. They are going to be playing Rudess Morgenstein Project and Rhythm of Time tunes with the whole thing being sponsored by Roland. He also completely finished tracking the Blotted Science drum parts for the "Machinations of Dementia" album with Ron Jarzombek of Spastic Ink, Gordian Knot and Watchtower and Alex Webster of Cannibal Corpse. The album should come out sometime in 2007.

Colin's new recording studio, Menegroth, the Thousand Caves (thethousandcaves.com) is now up and running in New York City.

Colin has just completed work on a new album from his project Byla, with Dysrhythmia guitarist Kevin Hufnagel, ex-Swans vocalist Jarboe, and Crom-Tech / Orthrelm guitarist Mick Barr. It is due out in the fall.

Blotted Science Replace Drummer Yet Again

BLOTTED SCIENCE, the instrumental extreme metal project led by guitarist Ron Jarzombek (WATCHTOWER, SPASTIC INK) and bassist Alex Webster (CANNIBAL CORPSE), has parted ways with drummer Derek Roddy (ex-HATE ETERNAL, NILE) who replaced original skinsman Chris Adler (LAMB OF GOD) only months ago. Taking Roddy's place is highly touted New Jersey native Charlie Zeleny of newly signed Black Market Activities/Metal Blade recordings artists BEHOLD... THE ARCTOPUS.

"Well, sometimes things don't quite work out they way you want them to and this is one of those instances," commented Ron Jarzombek on the split. "Derek Roddy gave us his notice a couple of weeks ago and won't be a part of BLOTTED SCIENCE after all. Everything is still cool between us. Basically, Derek did not have the necessary time to dedicate to the project — he's writing a book and has a clinic tour coming up — and, unfortunately, the physical distance between us proved to be a bigger than anticipated obstacle in the recording process. Anyway, the good news is that Charlie Zeleny from BEHOLD... THE ARCTOPUS has stepped in on the fly and he's already begun final tracking. Charlie is totally smokin' on this shit! The man is seriously skilled and besides doing lots of session work on the East Coast, Charlie is also working with Jordan Rudess from DREAM THEATER as a member of his online conservatory staff. You can get the full lowdown on Dr. Z on his website www.CharlieZeleny.com . Barring any further delays we'll have all the drums recorded by October/November and finish the album before Christmas."

BLOTTED SCIENCE's debut CD, "The Machinations of Dementia", is tentatively scheduled for an early 2007 release through a yet-to-be determined label. Among the 16 songs set for inclusion are 'Narcolepsy', 'Bleeding In The Brain', 'R.E.M.', 'Synaptic Plasticity', 'Laser Lobotomy', 'The Insomniac', 'EEG Tracings', 'Oscillation Cycles', and 'Brain Fingerprinting'.

Blotted Science Recruit Hate Eternal Drummer

Blotted Science, the technical extreme metal project masterminded by guitarist Ron Jarzombek (Watchtower, Spastic Ink) and bassist Alex Webster (Cannibal Corpse), have announced the addition of drummer Derek Roddy (Hate Eternal). Roddy replaces Chris Adler (Lamb Of God) who recently had to bow out due to other commitments. The earlier tentative project name, The Machinations Of Dementia, will now find its place as the CD's title.

"Alex and I are stoked to welcome Derek to the fold - he is an incredible drummer", enthuses Jarzombek. "His skills and abilities work out extremely well for us since we are writing and recording separately and sending files back and forth via the internet. Derek, Alex and I got a chance to meet up at NAMM last week, had a great time talking about the project, and are all very hyped to get things moving.

"Derek will begin recording at Mana Recording Studios in Florida, hopefully with Eric Rutan producing, after Hate Eternal get back from their upcoming European tour. Alex is half way done recording his bass tracks for the album and will be totally done in a few weeks. Then it's up to Derek and me to finish up mid-year."

'The Machinations Of Dementia' will feature 16 songs, including 'Synaptic Plasticity', 'Bleeding In The Brain', 'Narcolepsy', 'Oscillation Cycles', 'Brain Fingerprinting', and 'Laser Lobotomy', and is scheduled for a late 2006 release on a yet to be determined label.

Machinations of Dementia Part With Drummer

MACHINATIONS OF DEMENTIA, the technical extreme metal project masterminded by guitarist Ron Jarzombek (WATCHTOWER, SPASTIC INK) and bassist Alex Webster (CANNIBAL CORPSE), have announced the departure of drummer Chris Adler (LAMB OF GOD), who has had to bow out due to other commitments.

Said Jarzombek: "We are sad to see Chris go but with his heavy work load with LAMB OF GOD it just wasn't gonna work out scheduling-wise. Chris said that for him to do the music justice would take too much time, and he doesn't have it right now. Chris and I hope to work together at a later time.

"So we are officially putting the word out that we are looking for a drummer to complete this lil' three-headed monster. Technical proficency and dedication aside, being able to read music is a major plus as we are writing and recording separately and sending files back and forth via the Internet. As of now we have 15 songs written and 2 more to go final recordings should start getting under way shortly after that."

Jarzimbek: Progressive Metal = "Keyboard Metal"

RON JARZOMBEK, guitar shredmaster of SPASTIC INK and WATCHTOWER (Marty Friedman was a bandmate), has garnered a cult following for his progressive metal guitar eccentricities. However, he is not very inspired by what passes as progressive metal these days. Here is an excerpt from his talk with Electricbasement.com, "...And progressive metal is becoming so stale these days. I don’t even know why they call it progressive metal these days; it’s keyboard metal. That’s what I think they should call it – keyboard metal.

"I read on the Internet they don’t even call Spastic Ink prog metal. They call it math metal. I think that’s because progressive metal is keyboard metal. It’s kind of a drag."

He predicts a demise as well, "I think prog metal is headed to where neo-classical is. You know how that got so burned out? That’s where prog metal is heading. People just seem to want the same stale keyboard shit. We went through the Dream Theater clone phase; now, the whole genre’s become a cliché of itself."

He does show praise for a few newbies such as ZERO HOUR and MESHUGGAH.
