Background

Heavy metal quartet Mudvayne formed in Peoria, IL, in 1996, its members adopting the unusual pseudonyms Kud (C. Gray) (vocals), Gurrg (G. Tribbett) (guitar), and sPaG (M. McDonough) (drums). The group's original bassist was replaced after two years by Ryknow (Ryan Martinie). Always concerned with the visual aspect of their performances, the band developed bizarre stage identities, while their sound (dubbed "math metal" in an attempt to explain its intricacies) had little in common with most of their peers. Characterised by challenging arrangements and with influences ranging from new wave, electro to metal, the result was a compelling mix of staccato riffing, raging vocals, and electronica with jazzy flourishes.

Despite great reviews in the press, Mudvayne has seemed to take the roll of Slipknot follower. Both wearing make-up and use many pseudonyms. But considering the circumstances, Mudvayne has been a major draw at metal festivals and tours.

Mudvayne reached fame through the release of their sophomore album, LD. 50. (L.D. 50 referrs to the pharmacological count for lethal dosages) Through good reviews and worthwhile record sales, the band has created a following of their own.

Bloodsimple Sign To Bullygoat / Warner Bros.

New York based hard rockers Bloodsimple have signed to Bullygoat Records with distribution through Warner Bros. Records. Bullygoat Records was founded by Chad Gray, vocalist for the rock band Mudvayne. Commenting on Bloodsimple, Gray had this to say, "Last year, Bloodsimple opened for Mudvayne in Philadelphia, and it was there that I first saw them perform. It didn't take long for me to understand that they have the songs, energy, and live performance as well as the ability to captivate an audience." As for the band's signing to Bullygoat / Warner Bros. Records Chad added, "Starting a label has always been something I have wanted to do. Having my own label enables me to help friends that I've met on the road who have great bands, get their music heard. I'll be involved with them artistically and also help guide them to make better decisions than I did early in my career. As the first signees to Bullygoat, Bloodsimple has finally made this vision a reality."

Mudvayne Address Their "Soprano's" Appearance

MUDVAYNE recently had their name dropped on hit show The Sopranos, much to the surprise, but delight of the band:

"New York, NY - For recording artists Mudvayne, being name-dropped on episode of The Sopranos was an unexpected plot twist in the band's evolution.

The episode — which premiered Sunday, March 28—featured A.J. Soprano, played by actor Robert Iler, going to a Mudvayne concert at the Hammerstein Ballroom in Manhattan. Singer, Chad Gray; guitarist, Greg Tribbett; bassist, Ryan Martinie and drummer Matt McDonough were surprised when they found out that Mudvayne was mentioned on HBO's popular mafia-drama.

"We heard that Robert likes Mudvayne and is the one responsible for bringing us into the show. It was really cool of him to do that," says Tribbett, who is a fan of The Sopranos. "I was watching the episode and couldn't believe it when I saw Robert walking out of the Hammerstein Ballroom past a bunch of Mudvayne posters. It was like a pop culture stamp of approval on the band."

"What is especially gratifying for Mudvayne," McDonough says, "is that the band was not looking for recognition. We've been asked to be on television shows before but we've always said no because we don't want to debase our music by making a spectacle of the band," he explains. "It's much more satisfying to creep into public consciousness this way – on our own terms. "

"But don't expect Mudvayne to go Hollywood any time soon," Gray assures. "The glitz and glamour is the exact opposite of what we're about," he says. "We went to the premiere of 'Ghost Ship' a couple of years ago because our song 'Not Falling' was in the movie. It was a surreal, out-of-body experience standing on the red carpet talking to people like Paula Abdul and Entertainment Tonight." "

In addition to a recent tribute album to the band, MUDVAYNE's music was also the subject of 'In the Chamber with MUDVAYNE'. The album features a string quartet interpreting the band's catalog including 'Dig' and 'Death Blooms' from L.D. 50 (2000); 'Some Assembly Required' from The Beginning of All Things to End (2001) as well as 'Silenced,' 'Not Falling' and 'Trapped in the Wake of a Dream' from The End Of All Things To Come (2002).

MUDVAYNE recently rented a ranch in Northern California where the band is writing and rehearsing songs for the band's third, as-yet-untitled, Epic Records release due out this Fall.
