"'Southern Storm' not only continues Krisiun's succession of brutal death metal albums but could well be their best in years. "

Brazilian death metal band Krisiun has been going for over fifteen years and continues to improve both as a unit and musically. "Southern Storm" not only continues Krisiun's succession of brutal death metal albums but could well be their best in years.

Drummer Max Kolesne is able to play the typical death metal blast beats at warp speed, but where he excels is playing drum patterns that are creative and help Krisiun have a distinctive sound. The band delivers a potent brand of death metal with "Southern Storm." The songs are diverse, with crushing riffs speeding up into frenzied solos. Subtlety and extreme metal don't usually go together, but listen closely and you'll hear small nuances that make these songs very memorable.

The track everyone is interested in hearing is the cover of fellow Brazilian metallers Sepultura classic, "Refuse/Resist." The cover doesn't match up to the original but very few covers ever do, particularly when the original song is so well known. Krisiun is certainly able to do the song justice, however, and it's well worth a listen.

Overall this album will please not only most Krisiun fans but the majority of death metal fans in general. It's skull crushingly, ball burstingly heavy, yet still catchy with some fantastic guitar work from Moyses Kolesne.

Highs: Opener "Slaying Steel" sets a great tone of what's to come. The album doesn't stop its onslaught of brutality for a minute.

Lows: The cover of "Refuse/Resist" seems to have been a very risky choice for the band and will not please everyone.

Bottom line: This album proves that Krisiun is one of the few bands going who claim to be "brutal" and "heavy" and can actually back it up. "Southern Storm" is a must have for anyone who loves extremely heavy death metal.
