New Contact Form, Change In Email Addresses

I've posted a new contact form that can be used for contacting us for comments and suggestions or for sending news tips. Due to enormous amounts of spam, we've been forced to shut down several email addresses that we previously used such as news@metalunderground.com and my direct email deathbringer@metalunderground.com. If you've sent news tips within the past month or two, I apologize if they were not posted, as I stopped checking the news account regularly, but was only just now able to get this contact form posted with some free time I've had over the holidays.

Thanks for your understanding and the many news tips to come.

Browser Display Bugs

I'm aware that with the official release of Mozilla.org's Firefox browser, there are some bugs with the display of metalunderground.com. I will be looking into fixing these in the near future. These bugs should only be graphical in nature and not affect the functionality of the site. Thanks for your patience.

More On Comments

You might notice now that it is required to be logged in to post as a registered user's name. I've tried to make this as painless as possible by providing the means to do so on the comment form itself if you need to login. So if you'd like to prevent people from impersonating you, register now.

Also, I'm fiddling with some different styles on the comments. Let me know what you think about them and the site design in general. I have some changes in mind, but other priorities first.

Got Gmail?

In the wake of the Metallica 'So What' giveaway, I'm giving out gmail invitations. (Gmail is Google's web-mail similar to Yahoo's or Hotmail, which offers 1GB of storage space; accounts are available via invitation only while Google beta tests the interface and scalability issues.) The first 6 people to post their email addresses here - in the form of name AT domain.tld (to prevent email harvesters from reading it) - will be sent gmail inviations.

Our First Giveaway: So What?

UPDATE: The winners have been chosen and notified. This giveaway is now over.

Random House has been kind enough to provide Metal Underground.com 3 copies of the recently released book "SO WHAT: The Good, the Mad, and the Ugly", the official illustrated Metallica chronicle, by Steffan Chirazi and Metallica. It's hard-cover, full-color, and contains tons of photos, images of hand-written notes, and is the first and only fully authorized Metallica book.

Here's straight from the press release:

Edited by Steffan Chirazi, full-time chronicler of the band and editor of So What! magazine, a quarterly that is mailed to the 22,000 members of the Metallica fan club, SO WHAT! illustrates Metallica's journey from the inside-including its milestones, memories and darkest days. A collection of both new and archival materials, SO WHAT! lavishly chronicles all aspects of Metallica's rise to fame from its small but fierce cult following in L.A. through the late 80s and early 90s when the band attained massive success, becoming the best-selling rock act of the 1990s, to the present day where they can be found on the "Madly in Anger" tour- So What! magazine has been there for for all of the highs and lows, and everything in between.

SO WHAT! includes original interviews, handwritten notes from the band, intimate journal entries, and more than 1000 exclusive photos. With the intimate involvement of current band members, James Hetfield, Lars Ulrich, guitarist Kirk Hammett, and bassist Robert Trujillo and compiled with the hard and humorous attitude that has earned Metallica their place in the rock-god stratosphere, SO WHAT! provides an all-access pass to the backstage including:

  • Transcripts of exclusive interviews, including the first-ever Metallica round-table discussion, an in-depth perspective of the band from Lars' father, Torben Ulrich, and an exclusive Spring 2004 band interview;

  • Intimate access to the band by way of notes scribbled throughout the book, lists of favorites, snapshots, and personal contributions;

  • Journal entries and one-on-one interviews with each of the band members where they wax eloquent about life, each other, the music and everything in between;

  • Honest discussion about more difficult times such as the search for a new bassist, James Hetfield's rehabilitation, and their extended hiatus from 1999-2002;

  • Thousands childhood photos, the band's early days, tours, vacations, and the recording studio.

The one and only authorized Metallica chronicle, SO WHAT! is an intimate look at the musical, physical, and emotional life of Metallica as a band and as individuals. As James Hetfield says in his personal Introduction to the book, "We want something that goes beyond just information. A deep and honest look into us as humans and the fun and pain we go through. This book (in our best attempt) shows our warts and all inside and out. Reminding ourselves that we are 'works in progress.'"

All you have to do to enter the giveaway for a chance to win one of these 3 copies, is to sign up as a member of metalunderground.com. You must provide a real email address, as notification of the winners will be done via email on September 15. Failure to respond within a week will result in a new winner being drawn.

Member Signup Coming Soon

A member signup form has been on my to-do list for while, but with recent impersonations, etc going on in the comments and a giveaway looming, I decided to bump it up to a priority. There will not be any other immediate benfits of having a membership on metalunderground.com, but there are plans for a full-blown forum and personalization options in the future. Keep an eye on the site for the official announcement...soon.

Introducing darkstar and blacksun

With my heavy workload as of late, I brought on board two more contributors, darkstar, of Vancouver, BC (Canada) and blacksun, of Portugual. Both have jumped right in and have already been posting news and helping with band bios and such for a few weeks now, so give them a warm welcome and horns up!

We're Baaaaaack

What was a server upgrade turned wrong when we had a hard drive failure. To make matters worse, the most recent data backup was corrupt, so we've lost much more news, comments and band info than we expected... I've exhausted all means to retreive this information and decided the only thing left is to move forward.

With that said, I've learned a lot from this disastrous experience and it won't happen again! Despite the loss, the server has been upgraded and better backup procedures are already in place. There's still more metal news to come and new site features coming in the near future for metalunderground.com.

Thanks for your patience and support.

(PS - past interviews will be restored shortly)

We Sold Our Souls To MTV

Hey, Metalunderground.com got a mention on MTV.com for the April fools stories posted the other day!

The Metal Underground (www.metalunderground.com) truly got into the fraudulent spirit with over a dozen phony headlines and message-board threads. These included ones suggesting that Slayer had broken up, with Kerry King leaving to write songs with Avril Lavigne and the rest of the band starting a side project with Creed's Mark Tremonti; Fred Durst, following his request that his band be known as limpbizkit, had legally changed his name to fredurst; Metallica and Megadeth had repaired their relationship and would tour together next year; and details about a "Summer Sanitation" tour featuring such bands as Def Tone Loc and PullMyFinger 11.

Props to siN's Metal News and The PRP for the mention of their hoaxes and full-site makeovers as well. They were done well, er purposely not well, er something.

So does this mean we've sold out now that MTV has mentioned us? Oh the jokes abound, but alas April 1st is past... But I still think that's hella cool to get mentioned like that.

Gotcha Suckaz - April Fools!

We hope you enjoyed the April Fools gags yesterday. We sure did, and the comments were even more entertaining in some cases. Things got a little carried away by the end of the day, but CorrosiveMind and I made up after the bleeding stopped. We’re no Infernal Combustion, but we all like to have a little fun with our true passion – metal – too.

If you happened to bite and thought the stories were real, then we apologize. Each story had many clues to tip your off that they were fake. I'd call you gullable, but spellcheck is telling me it's not in the dictionary...

If you missed the stories, you can still read them all here. (Note the date on each story, however.)

We now return to our regularly scheduled programming of Real MetalTM news.

F***ing Censored Comments

As several people have pointed out, I recently implemented a script that translates swearing/cursing/vulgarity, etc. on the comments into "bleeped" versions. (E.g. "what the f*** is up with the f***in censoring of our f***in comments?")

I personally dislike censorship and did not want to do anything of the sort until it dawned on me that there are so many technologies out there trying to make the 'net a "safer place" [for kids], that by allowing mass amounts of swearing on the site would, in effect, result in this site being censored by other parties such as AOL, Google, and many other directories and third party software. Many of the search engines display "safe" results BY DEFAULT, which really sucks. Other sites or third party software may ban metalunderground.com content altogether if it were to contain excessive swearing.

So yes, part of me hates the script I put in place. But the fact that many of you have happened upon this site in the past 6 months (traffic has increased almost tenfold) makes me happy that I have made this site and the news and information we present more accessible for anyone to find in the long run. Afterall, one of the main goals of metalunderground.com is to get underground metal bands exposure, and that is not done by getting censored by a large percent of the 'net in the first place.

So go ahead, lemme hear what you f***in think about it! But in all fairness, I think you f***ing get the point even with the godd*mn f***ing "bleeped" profanity, so stop yer b****ing! ;-) If it makes anyone feel better, your unedited comments are actually stored as-is, so if I decide to update or remove the bad language filter, it'll all be shown just as you typed it.

In the end, like everything else on the web, "getting it right" is a technical endeavor. As such, I'd appreciate it if anyone becomes aware of a site or software that is filtering/censoring metalunderground.com, please let me know about it so I can look further into the situation for a possible resolution.

Thanks to all of our readers who've stuck around and exchanged ideas and opinions on this site (even when it's only a "F*** Slipknot", "F*** Phil" or "Linkin Park f***ing sucks!"). Trust that we know what you mean.

Bands Database Surpasses 500 Metal Bands

Metalunderground.com has surpassed 500 bands in its database! Since linking the bands database to news, our bands list has grown tremendously. While not every band page is complete with biographical information, links and discography, every band page does have band-specific news at this time.

We’re working hard to fill in the details for as many bands as we can. And while we appreciate the good intentions, we do not need this information sent directly to us, as it is more a matter of time than availability. Besides bios, we’ll soon have a link submission form and band discographies. Live and CD reviews, and underground band features are also in the works shortly thereafter.

So check out the bands page, and find your favorite bands and news about them.

Help Wanted!

As we move forward into another year of metal news and more, metalunderground.com is looking to bolster its staff and smooth out the coverage (across times of day and metal tastes/genres) more. We're looking to bring onboard another couple metalheads to help out with the news and band information (and reviews, interviews, and more later). We're especially interested in people who can post some news during the morning/day hours (Eastern Time), or someone in the midwest or west coast (US), or the UK, Europe or Australia, both for the time differences and for the difference in metal outlook and local scenes.

The only requirements other than a few (15-30) minutes a day to post news (and some time to occaisionally do a review or interview), is that you are fluent and can write well in English. And of course that you're a metalhead / headbanger, regardless of your specific metal tastes.

If being able to contribute to the metal community and underground (via metalunderground.com) sounds satisfying in itself, please contact me to help out, and become part of a rapidly growing website!

Post Mortem 2003

2003 has been a good year in metal music and for metalunderground.com. Metalunderground.com has increased its readership by more than 250 percent this year, added two new contributors (Slaughtered and ZmetallicA), and I've tweaked the site design and got a lot done on coding new features into the site (band pages, news by bands, commenting on news, and more).

I thank the contributors here on metalunderground.com for such a successful year, as well as all of the readers and those who make themselves heard and make this a more interesting place to hang out. And as always, thanks to the metal bands - known and underground - for keeping the metal spirit alive.

I've always had huge plans for this site (it's just a matter of time), and I plan to work on more cool site features in 2004. Here's hoping 2004 is as good a year in metal as well!

Keep coming back and KEEP METAL ALIVE!

News By Band

The Bands page has been updated, and you can search for bands and get news by band. Simply find the band you are interested in and go to that band page. Related news is shown at the bottom of every band page. Furthermore, each news article (on the details page - click the headline to get there) shows which bands it's related to. You can click on those band names to view the band info and more news about that band.

Sometime in the future, you'll be able to specify your favorite bands and easily view news about only those bands on one page.

I just wanted to point this feature out, since the amount of news can sometimes be overwhelming and make it difficult to find only news in which you're interested.

Post Your Comments

The latest feature on metalunderground.com is that you can now comment on news items. Simply click the article headline or the "X comments" link and the form to comment on the article is at the bottom of the article. My hope is that this will bring our readers together and let them share opinions, and in the process hear about new bands and other metal happenings.

Please respect your fellow metalheads and enjoy this new feature.

Hi my name is Zack. I am a new admin on this site. I'm 19 from New Jersey.

I like all types of metal:
Favorite bands include Blind Guardian, Iced Earth, Demons & Wizards, System of a Down, Amorphis, One Minute Silence, Lacuna Coil, The Gathering, Therion, Symphony X, Nevermore, In Flames, Dark Tranquillity, Angel Dust, Borknagar, Dream Theater, Liquid Tension Experiment, Lamb of God, Arch Enemy, Joe satriani, Beseech, Divinity Destroyed, Evil Adam, Am I Blood, Face to Flames, Manmade God, Opeth, Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, and well too many more.

I'm a music freak when it comes down to it. I have a band of my own, which I may give updates about in the future, though we just formed. Though i do play guitar in the band and stuff, my real focus is on recording bands. I currently have a small studio set up in my room.

Oh yeah a small note: metallica is in my SN cause they were the first band that I loved enough to pursue other bands like it thus begining my dive into the metal community.
