Tales From The Pit: Standing Up For The Ladies
We've been talking to bands and fans everywhere to get their favorite mosh pit stories. This week Johnny K from Vancouver's Omega Crom shares a pair of stories from shows he's attended:
Cannibal Corpse at Studebakers, some dude grabbed my friend Angel's tits, she was getting pissed off so me and my friend Ryan were moshing around and came down the stairs from the bar with our arms locked together and clothes lined this dude and bent him backward over the edge of the stage, needless to say he didn't bother her again. Later on I was headbanging forward as the guy in front of me was headbanging backward and I bashed the bridge of my nose off the back of his head, ouch.
Megadeth at Studebakers the first show they played without Marty I was in front row and center. This nice girl comes up before the show and says you look strong you should protect me. So I put her between my arms. When Megadeth came out the crowd pushed forward so hard I couldn't hold the weight and I was being crushed against the rail and this girl was getting crushed by me. After Holy Wars ( the first song) the bouncers clued in and pulled her outta there, never saw her again. I stayed there the entire show and my ribs were broken afterwards, it was worth it.

Tales From The Pit: The Extended Crowd Surf
We've been talking to bands and fans everywhere to get their favorite mosh pit stories. This week Special Ops guitarist Akbar shares a fun crowd surfing story with us:
"Mosh story, Crazy out door show, I think it was Vans Warped Tour or something, I forget the band that was playing, I was a bit too inebriated. lol. Been in the pit all day and by now the batteries are starting to run a bit low after 4 hrs.
"Last band goes on, and all I feel is the waist band of my pants being pulled up along with my feet being grabbed, next thing I know I'm lying down on top of the crowd staring at the sky with the band rocking out, then all of a sudden they sit me up. Here I am sitting on people's hands like it was my lazy boy watching the show, so I start asking them to move me around and they did, turned me around and I saw a sea of heads! All I could think of was man I need to play that stage, and we eventually did :)) and who, next thing I now I'm being turned over on my belly, and being shoved towards the front - still kinda cool in the mental state I was in, but then, a pair of strong ass hands grab my shoulders and the rest keep pushing but the shoulders are staying put, seconds later I'm in an inverted cross position facing the crowd, thinking HOLY SHIIIIIT DON'T DROP ME! while smiling of course. lol
"Anyhow, it turned out to be a good friend, and he threw me on my back again and into the crowd, only this time I didn't end up standing on my head, they started tossing me up and down, and then they gave a big throw, tossing me a good 3 feet in the air, and they cleared, leaving me to fall a good 8-10 feet flat on my back. Very very dangerous and stupid move on their end, I could have been paralyzed if I wasn't smart enough to grab someones shirt to get me to hit the floor ass first which hurt, but not as bad as if I had landed flat on my back.
"That was the longest surf I had done ever, and probably the most fun. to anyone out there thinking of dropping people on their backs, you can really hurt someone while doing that. \m/\m/"
Special Ops just recently signed to Thorny Bleeder Records for the release of their third album, "Through The Heart of The Infidel" (reviewed here), which will see an official release soon. You can download an MP3 of the song "Pressure" off of "Through the Heart Of The Infidel."

Tales From The Pit: Escaping Devildriver's Pit
We've been talking to bands and fans everywhere to get their favorite mosh pit stories. This week Devildriver frontman Dez Fafara points us to one of the largest pits witnessed:
"The Tale I have can be viewed online! DevilDriver in the tent at Download, almost 15,000 people and a huge pit takes place. Everyone is cool, taking care of each other and suddenly, from the stage, I see some dude scrambling up a pole in the middle of the pit to get up and away from the mayhem! He stayed till the song was finished and we caught it all on tape. Other stories include random broken legs, arms, noses, teeth knocked out, pitters passing out and the always fun ‘I’ve fallen and can't get back up!'"

Devildriver recently wrapped up a tour with Suffocation and Goatwhore where they were doing a little work on some new material as well. The band will be heading overseas to take part in Hammerfest from March 11th - 13th, 2010 in North Wales.

Tales From The Pit: Mutiny of the Vans
We've been talking to bands and fans everywhere to get their favorite mosh pit stories. This week AJ Jacobs of Mutiny Within tells a story that many of us can relate to, either because it happened to you or because you remember it happening to someone at a show.
"I was about 15 years old, went to see Children Of Bodom live, my favorite band at the time. So I was crowd surfing, screaming along with the lyrics, etc. Then I got into the pit, and oh man, I got my ass kicked. Not just that, but my sneaker came loose and I lost it. I had those big VANS sneakers, so it's no wonder it fell off.
"Anyway, so I only have 1 sneaker on at this point and I'm getting pushed further and further back in the venue. Then I saw an object getting thrown all the way to the ceiling several times. And of course, it was my shoe, people were just throwing it around.
"By the end of the show, I made it up to the barricade. When the last song ended and people started clearing out, I saw a bunch of random sneakers near the security guard. I said "Give me a left shoe!", so they did. It wasn't mine, but I wore it for the next week until I bought some new shoes. Needless to say, I steered away from VANS ever since."
Mutiny Within is currently touring North America with Sonata Arctica in support of their self-titled debut album, which was released on February 23rd. The band also had a track featured on the brand new "God of War III" EP. Finally, the band is only a few episodes into a 12-part documentary that can be seen at mutinywithin.com. New webisodes in the series are posted every Wednesday.

Tales From The Pit: Hugging It Out In The Pit
We've been talking to bands and fans everywhere to get their favorite mosh pit stories. This week Phoenix, Arizona post-hardcore/metalcore band blessthefall's lead singer Beau Bokan shares a "heart-warming" pit story:
"So we're on tour with Silverstein, playing a show in Denver, Co and it's a packed house. Kids are getting rowdy. I could tell there were a couple obvious 'tough guys' in the crowd who were getting a little too excited. So I was keeping an eye on them. Before you know it, two dudes were in each other's faces and one of the guys throws a punch totally knocking the other one down. I made the band stop playing immediately. I told both of the dudes that if they were going to fight they could go outside and finish fighting otherwise they would have to hug each other if they wanted to stay in the show. So they hugged it out and the show went on. It felt awesome to make 2 strangers who were at each other's throats ACTUALLY hug it out just to stay in the show and see them have a good time."
blessthefall recently announced that they will headline The Bangover Tour this March/April with support from Miss May I, Greeley Estates and Before Their Eyes. The U.S. and Canadian run follows up their slot on The Atticus Tour late last year.

Tales From The Pit: Losing An Arm To The Crowd
We've been talking to bands and fans everywhere to get their favorite mosh pit stories. This week guitarist Carl Porcaro of New York hardcore act Killing Time shares a tale of losing limbs:
"I’ve seen a lot of crazy shit but some of the craziest shit I’ve seen has been with our own band. A lot of people don’t remember this but our singer (Anthony Comunale) used to have a trick arm and it would come flying out of the socket. We’d be playing songs and kids from the crowd or our road guys would take his arm and try to put it back in the socket and he’s screaming while this is going on. That happened very close to me at shows and I got a great view of it. There was one time where he came running down the stairs when we were playing this show and he says 'What’s up, this is Killing Time!' But then he goes flying over the monitor and hits the barrier they’ve put up so people don’t stage dive. He busts his arm out of the socket all of 15 seconds into the show."
"Funnily enough one time his arm came out of the socket during the first song and no matter how many people tried to help him he could not get it back in and was rushed to the hospital. We finished the set with all the kids in the audience singing led by our buddy cwolf who became our bass player 10 years later."

Tales From The Pit: Pint Glasses And Shoes
Every week we talk with bands all over the world as they share some of their favourite stories involving metal's answer to line dancing, the mosh pit. This week, Seregon frontman James Moore told us of a new use for shoes.
"We played a show in Bristol and everyone was going apeshit, broken glass, faces, bodies and shoes flying around etc. I see one guy who gets shoved so hard he flys into the wall and his arm smashes through several pint glasses and heads straight back into the pit fist in the air with blood pissing out of his arm. The same pit with shoes flying around, one guy who is walking around pumping his fist in the air catches a shoe, then starts hitting people with the shoe all around him and then concentrates on the bloodied thrasher, quite simply the most beautiful thing I’ve ever seen!"
Seregon recently released a new seven track EP entitled, "Disposable Suffering" and will be touring all over Europe this year to support the record. You can purchase the CD by heading here.

Tales From The Pit: Wall of Death FAIL
We've been talking to bands and fans everywhere to get their favorite mosh pit stories. This week, Eddie from All Shall Perish shares quite a different wall of death experience from their previous one.
“Wuddup, Eddie from All Shall Perish here and I can recall one time we were in Dallas, TX and I called out a wall of death. Everyone immediately spread like wildfire and I was thinking that it was going to be incredible. Sadly though when shit went off I only saw maybe ten kids run at eachother. The saving grace to these kids being too scared to run at each other was watching this one guy clothesline another guy and seeing the kid who got hit do a complete backflip. He layed on the floor for the rest of the breakdown and I was too taken back to keep singing I just pointed and laughed at how incredible watching some WWF type shit go down was. I'm happy to say the guy was more than stoked and actually came and gave me a hug later! Thank you Dallas!”
All Shall Perish was recently confirmed for a European tour with Caliban as well as an appearance at Graspop 2010.

Tales From The Pit: Sea-Sick w/o the Cruise Ship
We've been talking to bands and fans everywhere to get their favorite mosh pit stories. This week’s story is from Henri Sattler of God Dethroned:
"We played Quito (Ecuador) on the South American part of our War Propaganda World Tour 2009 and there we had a slamming pit in which the whole crowd was participating. I felt like we were playing on a floating island since the whole stage was moving from its place! Even the sound desk moved from one place to another in the venue. Amps tumbling over, etc. I was the biggest madness I’ve ever experienced in my life on stage, and i was happy to leave the stage with all my teeth being in my mouth still..."
God Dethroned was recently confirmed for Austria's Kaltenbach Open Air 2010 festival and has an extensive US tour planned with Overkill, Vader, Evile, Warbringer and Woe of Tyrants early this year as well.

Tales From The Pit: Primordial On Pit Justice
We've been talking to bands and fans everywhere to get their favorite mosh pit stories. This week’s story is from Alan Averill Nemtheanga, frontman of Primordial:
"During the last show of the Paganfest Tour in LA in the pit some fucker was giving me the finger for the whole first half of the show, why you would go pay into a band to do that is beyond me. He was wearing a Dimmu shirt if I remember correctly so no doubt that says something about his taste in music. Maybe I fucked his girlfriend, sister or mother or something when she was on holidays in Ireland who knows? So I called him out on it and told him it was no problem to meet after the show and I would kick his fucking head in. 18 hole gettagrips got to be used for something right? Well I didn't need to as, as soon as the next track started he got hauled into the pit by some Irish boys and they kicked his ass big time. That made me smile, and here's me thinking Metal had lost it's edge o)..."
Primordial recently posted a new trailer online for their forthcoming new DVD release, "All Empires Fall." Meanwhile, the extreme metal side project Blood Revolt that Nemtheanga handles vocals for will enter the studio to record their debut album this winter.

Tales From The Pit: Korpiklaani Averts Disaster
We've been talking to bands and fans everywhere to get their favorite mosh pit stories. This week’s story is from Finnish folk metal band Korpiklaani:
"Generally, an audience has been very positive and in good mood at our shows, likely because of the fact that our music is pretty enjoyable and lively. For this reason, we have barely experienced anything serious because of moshpits during the concerts. Usually we would remember if something negative occurred and unfortunately something like that has happened for a couple of times. The only time, when our playing was interrupted during the song took place in London, while playing there for our first time.
"The venue was entirely filled with crowd. A lack of security barrier was another difficulty. In addition there were not any kind of security personnel between the audience and the stage. Immediately after starting the gig, I noticed that the front line of the audience was seriously suffering. The behaviour of some of the persons in the front row was too aggressive, as well. For the violent behaviour, I was forced to give a short notice to the audience, without any effect.
While a particular period of time during the concert, I recognized a woman falling to the ground, being under a pressure of others peoples' legs. This occurrence was followed by a really aggressive attack towards the surrounding people, made by this woman's partner.
"We stopped playing. I grasped the woman in the hand in order to pull her onto the stage and finally to the backstage. The woman was absolutely shocked and she had hurt herself severely. The security personnel still didn't lift a finger and were not interested in having control of the front line. Subsequently, the band started trying to get the violent fight stopped in the frontline. The fight wasn't stopped until bringing the partner of that woman from the audience through the stage to the backstage.
"After our concert, the couple was already drinking beer at our backstage, with pleasure. They were extremely grateful for what we had done to save them from a disturbing situation. Sometimes we were told that people have been hospitalized because of the moshpits. Broken
legs, etc. have been occurred. Fortunately we have succeeded in avoiding bigger dangers throughout the years."
Korpiklaani will be touring the US on the latest installment of Paganfest and plans to record a new album in 2010.

Tales From The Pit: Tearing Down The Venue

We've been talking to bands and fans everywhere to get their favorite mosh pit stories. This week Hoarfrost vocalist Ryan Suche shares a cautionary tale to venues who may want to cut off fans from the bands:
"Okay, so there's a bit of a preamble I have to get through first - gotta set the scene here, right?
"Late in 2008, a local venue called the Zoo installed a big honkin' fence in front of their stage. I heard there was some hardcore show where people were hanging from the ceiling and running around everywhere and some beer got spilt on the monitors and, well, the Zoo was sick of replacing the monitors or something like that. So, they installed this massive 4 foot high fence that just totally cuts you off from the band, and people fucking hate it.
"Which brings us to March of this year (2009). My band Hoarfrost was playing a gig with a local band called Tyrants Demise and TD was building up this crazy pit; the place was packed! And the front row was just bashing their fists against that fucking fence TD's entire set - BANG! BANG! BANG! BANG! BANG! And, as it goes, the shit hit the fan and those fuckers tore that fence right off it's mounts. People don't like that fucking fence. At all."
Hoarfrost recently self-released their debut EP "The Cold Plains." Samples from the EP can be heard at the band's MySpace page. Hoarfrost also announced in a recent interview with Metalunderground that they will soon start writing new material for an upcoming release.
Tales From The Pit: Ain't Got Time To Bleed
We've been talking to bands and fans everywhere to get their favorite mosh pit stories. This week Evergreen Terrace guitarist Josh James shares a true hardcore pit story:
"We recently played in Columbus, GA on our 'Almost Homeless Tour.' During our set I saw a guy push pitting hard as hell. He had shirt off, tattoos showing, muscles flexed and enjoy the set thoroughly. Pretty standard except for one small detail: blood. I noticed that he had a little bit of blood coming out of his back. I thought to myself that he must have been scrapped up in the pit or maybe fell into something during the show. Two songs later I noticed more blood. I kept my eye on him for our last three songs and notices he was becoming more and more bloody after every song. When the show finished I found out that right before our set there was a fight outside. He was jumped by three kids, one of which had a knife. That kid stabbed him four times in the back. After he got stabbed he beat the shit out of the kid who stabbed him and ended up beating the shit out of the rest of the guys who jumped him. He said he didn't want to go to the hospital cause he loves Evergreen Terrace. That's a true fan."
Evergreen Terrace recently wrapped up their Persistence Tour 2009 date with Ignite, Biohazard, Walls Of Jericho, Death By Stereo, and have a couple of dates planned with Ignite in January.

Tales From The Pit: The Moshing Bassist
We've been talking to bands and fans everywhere to get their favorite mosh pit stories. This week Guilt By Association bassist Britt shares one with us:
"I was on tour with my band Guilt by Association and we played a show at the Monkey Bar in Huntington, WV. We were mid set and it was really hot on stage. The riser puts you up really close to the lights and I needed a break from the heat. My guitarist and I ran off stage and started playing in the middle of the pit! He had a solo coming up so he only stayed a minute and then returned to the stage. Maybe the people in the pit thought I ran out too cause right then they all started moshing again instead of just circling around. I wasn't gonna be trampled so I pushed back and rocked out with the fans and right before I made it back to the stage this guy ran into me and I split his eye open with the headstock of my bass! He kept moshing and took his shirt off the stop the bleeding! After the show we were signing autographs at the merch table and I figured he'd be long gone but I looked up and there he was. He said 'I have to shake you hand and tell you you fuckin rock.... now I'm gonna go get some stitches!' He was die hard... it was awesome!"
Guilt By Association recently announced in an interview with Metalunderground that they are in pre-production for their upcoming EP "Chapter 2." Sample tracks from their first EP "Chapter 1" can be heard at the band's MySpace page.
Tales From The Pit: The Power Of Joose
We've been talking to bands and fans everywhere to get their favorite mosh pit stories. This week The Carrier drummer Mike shares one with us:
"Well Rain Fest 2008 was our first fest ever, and our first ever show on the West Coast (Or Northwest, whatever). It was also the first time any of us had ever had Joose, the most unbelievable and magical malt liquor known to man. Well, I guess in the end, after about seven or eight juices, Anthony, who is bigger than most silverback gorillas, decided to mosh during Ceremony's set. It didn't take long for Anthony to knock some dude unconscious. In fact, he hit the kid so hard that the kid landed on some other people, in turn knocking all of them over as well. We don't know what happened to the guy. Hopefully he is okay. That's the power of Joose."
As previously reported, The Carrier has confirmed dates for a European tour this winter with Dead Swans (UK). The Carrier, after touring all summer, has also started working on material for a new full length record. In the meantime, check out some of their music on their MySpace player.
Tales From The Pit: A Front Flip Facial
We've been talking to bands and fans everywhere to get their favorite mosh pit stories. This week IMPIOUS drummer Mike Norén shares a story from a show they played in Germany:
"We did a show with Cataract at Markthalle in Hamburg back in 2005. I stood next to the stage and watched the entire Cataract set; I was really into the 'With Triumph Comes Loss' album at that time. And on the last song 'Reborn from Fire' I ran right out on stage, threw myself head first towards the monitors, grabbed them just before my head was about to smash into them and did a front flip right off stage. I remember my feet smashing into these German kids’ heads right before my entire bodyweight came slamming down on top of them. After the show a kid came up to me and told me in broken English/German how I 'put my foot in his head.' It was great fun."
I'm not so sure that kid has such fond memories of that night as Mike does! Perhaps it was lost in translation, but no blood, no foul.
Impious' new album "Death Domination" was just released in North America this week and will see an Asian release on December 23rd. You can check out some of their music here.

Tales From The Pit: The All Ages Mosh Pit
We've been talking to bands and fans everywhere to get their favorite mosh pit stories. This week guitarist Matthew Bile of Walking Corpse Syndrome shares his story of an all ages mosh pit in Deer Lodge:
"Montana gets a bad rap for being so sparsely populated, and the small towns in Montana get an even worse rap. But we'll play most any place people want to see us. So when folks in Deer Lodge, where the state pen is located and our drummers are from, wanted to see us, we played a show. We rented a venue. Our friends and family ran sound and lights. And half the town showed up. The other half was busy trying to shut down the 'devil worshiping' music. It felt more like a state fair than a metal show. All ages there really is all ages, from babies up to great grandparents.
"We've also noticed that there's an inverse relationship between size of town and intensity of mosh pit. The less stuff there is to do, the crazier the kids get. And Deer Lodge kids took home the trophy. There were no fewer than 4 mosh pits going on, segregated by age group (high school, junior high, and middle school) and gender (a chick pit is a sight to behold). It was a like a scene out of that movie Fight Club, with punches thrown, pile drivers driven, and even a kid slammed into a garbage can and kicked across the floor. I almost stopped the show because I was getting a little sick watching the mayhem, but not for a single second did I see the smiles leave their faces."
Tales From The Pit: A Bone Crushing Wall of Death
We've been talking to bands and fans everywhere to get their favorite mosh pit stories. This week, Ben of All Shall Perish prefers to let the video do most of the talking:
"Full Force Festival was probably one of the most memorable mosh pit's All shall Perish has ever created. The crowd busted one of the biggest wall of death's I have ever seen! check out the video from the Jumbotron:
"I heard from a few that attended that day that some kid broke both of his legs... Sorry about that!"
All Shall Perish just wrapped up a co-headlining tour of the US with Born of Osiris and will be heading to Europe in January for their "The Black Procession" tour with Machine Head, Hatebreed and Bleeding Through.

Tales From the Pit: Owning The Indie Mosh Pit
We've been talking to bands and fans everywhere to get their favorite mosh pit stories. This week Jason from Winter Storm shows those indie kids how it's done:
"Me and my friends went to a Metal/Indie night for new year's eve, turned out to be 90% indie, we moshed the whole night through and totally owned that night club!!! I think we easily made up for the lack of metal heads HAHA!!"
Winter Storm is playing the Femme Metal Fest on November 7th and is currently recording their first album "Serenity In Darkness," due out February 2010.
