Thyrfing Unveils New Album Release Date/New Song

"Jordafärd" (which translate as "Burial") is the second single to be released from Viking/Pagan metal act Thyrfing’s new album – their first in eight years. A brooding epic, "Jordafärd" demonstrates a slow and moody side of the band, in many ways different when compared to the extremely well received first single "Döp dem i eld," that was released in March this year. The track will be released along with cover artwork and beautiful visuals by Niklas Sundin (ex-Dark Tranquillity). The distinct cello parts for the track were recorded by Fox Skinner (Grand Magus) along with Dutch artist Lon Snow, and we also hear Swedish soprano Natalie Hernborg in the finale.

The band comments:
"This is the slowest and probably moodiest song on the album. A burial hymn and a longing for the end – the perfect album closer."

"Jordafärd" is taken from the upcoming album "Vanagandr," out August 27th on Despotz Records and can be heard here.

Despite there being no new studio recordings since 2013’s acclaimed "De ödeslösa," Sweden’s Thyrfing have remained active on the tour circuit with appearances at the likes of Wacken Open Air, Summer Breeze and Sweden Rock Festival, amongst many other shows. The lure of creating new music always remained however, and starting back in 2015, plans were made for what would become "Vanagandr," the band’s eighth release.

"Vanagandr" was co-recorded and co-produced by Jakob Herrmann (In Flames, Machine Head, Evergrey) at Top Floor Studios, Gothenburg, with the renowned Jacob Hansen (Volbeat, U.D.O., Katatonia) looking after the mix and mastering. The art concept for Vanagandr’ was executed perfectly by Niklas Sundin of Cabin Fever Media (ex-Dark Tranquillity) who reconnects with the band once again (he also did the ”Vansinnesvisor” album back in 2002).

Interview

The Catch Sinks Their Hooks Into The Metal World

Folk metal has come a long way over the years. From the folk influences on rock and metal pioneers such as Led Zeppelin, to the start of the sub-genre with the likes of Skyclad and Cruachan. It's even spawned several sub sub-genres such as Celtic metal, pirate metal, oriental metal and so many more. Today however, with the release of their debut single, "Sex Shark," a new sub sub-genre has been presented to the world named "heritage fishing metal" and the people responsible go by the name, The Catch.

With a very impressive list of collaborators (or co-conspirators) The Catch gifts the world something heavy, but also light hearted and frankly... Pretty damn funny. The lyrics to "Sex Shark" are probably best read when no one else is in the house and the video is just as crude and manky as the words that go with it.

To find out more about this bizarre new sub-genre, I was lucky enough to climb aboard the ship of Captain French, who granted me the world's first interview with The Catch.

WARNING: Contains some offensive and obscene language. Not to be taken 100% seriously.

Diamond Oz: So, I've been looking over the words to your debut single, "Sex Shark." I can certainly see why one would write a song about such a creature. Had you heard of the beast before you saw it?

Captain French: Well, it seems like such a long time ago but I feel like I've known sex sharks all my life as I grew up very close to a Catholic church. You see what I did there? I compared the sex shark to rapey priests hahahaha. Anyway, the sex shark is real and has plagued the dreams of my family since a few years after my death.

Forgetting The Memories Reveals New Album Details

Swedish metalcore five-piece Forgetting The Memories have announced their new album "Vemod," out 24th September 2021 via Long Branch Records. The band have also released new single "The Solstice Rebirth." You can check out the video below.

"Vemod" is the second LP by the band and has been mixed and mastered by Buster Odeholm (Vildhjarta, Humanity's Last Breath). The 10 new tracks are lyrically haunting and deal with personal setbacks, world-weariness, anger and melancholy or wistfulness (= "Vemod" in Swedish).

Forgetting The Memories commented the new single "This song is about manipulative behaviour that occurs more often than it should. We try to put ourselves in the perspective where you are being manipulated into doing things for others' cause. With that, you'll live in that mindset until the darkness has swallowed you whole. You'll become self-destructive and dangerous to others but mostly to yourself." More...

The Absence Shares "Coffinized" Music Video

The Florida-based melodic death metal quartet The Absence have unveiled a music video for the title track from their forthcoming album "Coffinized." The clip – which premiered last night on Twitch through bassist Mike Leon's channel (www.twitch.tv/MikeLeonShreds) – can be viewed below.

"Coffinized" is the second preview track from The Absence’s upcoming album of the same name, which will be released June 25 by M-Theory Audio.

Says vocalist Jamie Stewart, "We have all been 'Coffinized' at one point or another – trapped in a distant, funerary bubble, obscured under a dark, brooding outlook. As one lingers for a collective exhale, it calls out – a seeping, miserable existence disguised. Such horrors hidden by means of mental escape. But being engulfed by your own disgust and inability can be suffocating: it collapses in, embalming into your being. You become a living casket for all of your own bitter frustrations – nailed in and buried alive." More...

Varego Posts New Lyric Video Online

After the success of the first single, the Italian post prog trio Varego is glad to reveal "Tunnel," the second track taken from their new self-titled album "Varego," out on June 11, 2021. You can check out the lyric video for the song below.

The singer and bass player Davide Marcenaro comments: "Tunnel is a song with a strong emotional impact, which is why we chose it as the album opening. We tried to translate the meaning of the words and the story into music by contrasting a heavy and anxious intro with an airy and open chorus, with the guitar creating a real 'lyrical' line. The song is inspired by a story of my mother and is about the vision of a little girl in wartime, when the terrible sound of the air-raid siren was heard and consequently women, old people and children took refuge in the (still existing) tunnels that winded through the bowels of the village. One day the parish was hit by a bomb and a bricklayer working nearby was unable to save himself and lost his life." More...

Devin Townsend Confirms "Devolution Series #2"

As Devin Townsend announced earlier this year, he has been using the Covid downtime to work on new material for upcoming albums, and for a current lack of touring possibilities and encounters with fans on the road he decided to do a series of live albums, quarantine albums, and generally interesting projects that keep people entertained while he’s busy on his next larger releases. The series is called the "Devolution Series."

Devin comments:

"So we bring to you the ‘Devolution Series’: a grouping of oddities and interesting material that I would like people to hear, but don’t necessarily want to present as a ‘major release’.

"The series will include all the quarantine songs and concerts, as well as various live shows from the past few years.

"I’m am currently deep in the writing of my new projects and am very excited to be doing so. Thanks for facilitating my ability to do that, and I hope you enjoy the ‘Devolution Series’."

The second release under the "Devolution Series" moniker will be the "Devolution Series #2 – Galactic Quarantine" album, scheduled for June 25th 2021. It was recorded in 2020 in various places around the world as a replacement show for the COVID affected “Empath Vol 2 European Tour” and cancelled Summer festivals. It originally aired on September 5th 2020 on StageIt.com. More...

Brainstorm Releases New Music Video

Brainstorm will release their new album "Wall Of Skulls" on August 20th. While cover artwork has been revealed and pre-sale already started last week, the newest creation and first release from the album, "Escape The Silence" is out now.

Tenacious double-bass drums and powering bass lines, groovy guitar shreds and the uncompromising and recognizable voice of Andy B. Franck make this song a memorable top-notch and hard-hitting vigorous hymn! But talking about the singer, we should note that a very special guest was able to lay down some lines on the mic for this song. For the first time ever, the band has worked with a guest vocalist who assume a central role in the respective songs. "Escape The Silence" stars Rage’s legendary Peavy Wagner.

Peavy comments on his contribution: "A outrageously great song with a stunning video. It’s an honour for me to be part of that album. Such an excellent track and awesome piece of music!" More...

Burning Darkness Reveals New Album Details

Swedish black metal five-piece Burning Darkness will release their sophomore full-length album, "Dödens Makt," on July 2nd 2021 via Non Serviam Records.

Today the band unleashes the first single "Chiropteran Demon." Its primitive intro evolves into a progressive verse that mutates into an aggressive chorus making it a fair representation of the new album. You can watch the video below.

"‘Chiropteran Demon’ was chosen as first single because of the raw old-school energy mixed with some more modern heaviness. We felt the somewhat unorthodox mix worked really well. There are also some horror elements to the music which goes together well with the titular demon the lyrics talks about," comments Burning Darkness.

"Dödens Makt" (The Power of Death) is a more varied and atmospheric recording than the raw and intense debut. The band mixes both fast tempos and very heavy parts along with classic melodic tremolos and progressive elements. The lyrical themes of death and anti-Christianity are kept from the previous album, but new ones such as horror and Norse folklore are now present as well. The cover artwork depicting a demonic bat-like gargoyle was created by Lukasz Jaszak.

"Fans of 90's black metal will love it. We at Burning Darkness don't concern ourselves with current trends. We play the type of music we love. Still not rigidly stuck in one spot, we musically take inspiration from other genres of metal and beyond. The new album has more variation than our debut. While it goes mostly quite fast, we've added slower and heavy as led parts as well. Rawness is balanced with atmosphere." explains the frontman Per Kolderup Finstad. More...

Blood Red Throne Signs With Nuclear Blast

After nearly two and a half decades of death metal dominance with nine cataclysmic albums in their arsenal, Norway's veteran annihilators Blood Red Throne have officially joined the roster of Nuclear Blast!

Commenting on the signing, founding guitarist Daniel "Død" Olaisen states,

"Becoming a part of the NB family has been a huge goal for me for years. I always felt BRT deserved better after all these years and when I got to meet Gerardo Martinez (USA General Manager) and Oscar Martinez (Product Manager) when we toured the US 11 years ago, I kept in touch with them and tried to convince signing us even back then. Years went and albums were released and I never gave up. I knew we had a real masterpiece this time with the new album, and Gerado simply could not let it go this time. When he sent over the contract, both the band and especially myself were super excited and satisfied. Finally, after 10 years of trying! This band has so much potential and what better option than Nuclear Blast to team up with!" More...

Lacuna Coil Posts New Live Video Online

Italian metal giants Lacuna Coil just recently announced the release of a new live album, entitled "Live From The Apocalypse," to be released on June 25th.

As of now the live version of "Apocalypse," originally released on the latest studio album "Black Anima," is available on all digital platforms! You can watch the video to "Apocalypse" taken from the bonus DVD below.

"Looking at the sand gliding down through the hourglass...

"‘Apocalypse’ is factual and actual in today’s pandemic, though we couldn’t foresee this when we wrote it: the separation, the solitude, the confusion, the resilience. We keep on fighting for our will to survive." – Cristina Scabbia

"'Apocalypse' is usually a huge concept involving destruction or damage and the way the world ends. In our vision, there’s no big apocalypse just endless little ones. Ignorance, complacency, selfishness alone can bring apocalypse." – Andrea Ferro

"Live From The Apocalypse" is the fruit of an unprecedented time. Unlike previous live efforts the Italians, under the yoke of the pandemic, cleverly devised a way for their devoted fan base to hear and see them on stage by organising a special live stream event performing their latest album, “Black Anima” in its entirety, in September 2020. This very special show will now be released on vinyl and CD as well as a digital album. The physical album formats come with a bonus DVD featuring the footage of the original live stream. More...
