Interview

Cradle Of Filth Returns To Total Fucking Darkness

Before Cradle of Filth released its classic debut full-length "The Principle Of Evil Made Flesh," the band issued a 3-song demo appropriately titled "Total Fucking Darkness." When the group released this recording in 1992, it incorporated palm-muted guitar licks and hideously low growls. Keyboards added a cinematic touch to the romantic slant Dani Filth gained from reading classic poets such as Wordsworth and Lord Byron. All these variants helped COF stand above a wilting crop of shitty death metal demo bands.

Now 22-years later, Cradle of Filth are set to reissue these raw recordings in the grand merchandising fashion we've come to know the band for. On May 5th, Mordgrimm will Records will release the recordings as a double LP and a double CD. It will also arrive in a very limited edition box set, which is already sold out. Remastered by Tim Turan (Emperor, Thin Lizzy) at Turn Studios, these versions not only sound better but fans will get a chance to hear previously unreleased tracks.

Mordgrimm owner, Frater Nihil not only appeared on these recordings, he was responsible for releasing COF's first two studio recordings. Dani and his band mates left Nihil's former label, Cacophonous Records nearly twenty years ago, and let's just say it was not an amicable departure. As filth tells us, though, time heals wounds, as Nihil and Filth, plus Paul Ryan have once again connected to bring their fans this multi-media experience. Conducted fittingly on the day of the witches Sabbath, Walpurgisnacht, Dani Filth talks about the original recording session and how this new, remastered version has moved out of the darkness (total fucking) and into the light. Signum Regis Announces New Vocalist

Signum Regis has issued the following announcement about bringing on a new vocalist:

"Mayo Petranin has been with us as a guest singer since the last autumn. We played several gigs together, did a lot of rehearsing and spent a quite a bit of time together. During those months, we were able to tune in to the same vibe musically, we got to know each other and became friends.

"Being so happy with Mayo's work and his interpretation of our songs, we are now naturally moving forward to the next step: Mayo is now officially the singer and frontman of Signum Regis. Let us present you our new lineup: Ronnie König (bass), Filip Koluš (guitar), Mayo Petranin (vox), Ján Tupý (keyboard, backing vox), Jaro Jancula (drums).

"There was a bit of confusion about Ján missing on the official Exodus album photo. The reason for that was, that on that album, the keyboards were done by Ronnie and he wasn't so involved in the recording process of the album. Janci is a full member of the band, as he has been since the very beginning of Signum Regis.

"This new lineup will soon start rehearsing and recording the new album. There are 15 songs written already and there is also some unfinished material, that will be finalized during the next months. We will do our very best to record our best album so far. The material is very solid, so we are enthusiastic and optimistic as never before." More...

Obliterations Finishes Recording Album

Following a signing announcement at the beginning of 2014 and subsequent touring, California's Obliterations has finished tracking a debut LP for Southern Lord.

A day after returning from a Southwest U.S. tour in March, Obliterations recorded sixteen tracks with producer Chris Owens (Lords, Coliseum, Young Widows) at Dave Grohl's Studio 606 in only three days.

The record taps into the groundwork the band laid on its two previous EPs, but sheds light on a much more expansive, dark, brutal and bleak sound. Mixing will take place throughout May, with a Fall 2014 release through Southern Lord in sight. The LP's release will be joined by major US and European tour actions. More details on the impending full-length will be released in the coming months.

Hull Issues Roadburn Recap

Long-running Brooklyn sludge rock cooperative Hull recently wrapped up a two-week run of live takeovers through Europe. Joined by Boston doom bringers, Elder, the journey commenced in Tilburg, where the band leveled the stage at Roadburn. Recounted bassist/vocalist Sean Bryant Dunn from the band's final show in London:

"Our journey began in Tilburg for the Roadburn festival where we had the opportunity to play and hang out with some amazing friends, old and new. The following two weeks we burned many a mile with our new brothers Elder, reducing stages to rubble. There will not be a moment without the thought of touring with these boys. With that, I'll say thanks to everyone that helped us out, put us up, fed us and for wrecking their necks at the show. Europe truly understands how to appreciate and respect all artists. We will be back as soon as humanly possible!"

Hull also recently released a brand "new" hymn entitled, "Swamp Goat." Originally tracked in 2007, "Swamp Goat" laid dormant while the band penned material for the "Sole Lord" full-length and can now be heard at this location. You can also catch the band live:

Rivers Of Nihil Releases New Music Video

The Reading, PA natives in Rivers of Nihil continue their ascent of the death metal ladder with a brand new music video. "Birth of the Omnisavior" comes from their album "The Conscious Seed of Light" and can be seen below.

Formed in 2009, the modern death metal quintet's music is as dark and heavy as the coal and iron their home city was built upon, taking influences from some of death metal's heaviest, most abrasive hitters. Rivers of Nihil's debut album, "The Conscious Seed of Light," was recorded in March of 2013 at Mana Recording Studios in Florida with famed metal producer/musician Erik Rutan.

While "The Conscious Seed of Light" is not necessarily a concept album traditionally speaking, Rivers of Nihil began their project with the idea that they would release four separate albums tied together with one common theme: each reflecting a particular season of a year.

Bassist Adam Biggs elaborates: "The Conscious Seed of Light is intended to be representative of spring and explores various themes concerning new beginnings, growth, and an attachment to the natural world in a post-human Earth. Unlike some concept records however, we wanted to allow each song to work on its own terms. Rather than have the songs rely on each other to move a specific story structure forward; they work within their own separate narratives, but ultimately serve the album's broader concept." More...

Drakkar Recording New Album

On May 2nd, Drakkar will enter the studio to begin recording the successor to the acclaimed comeback album “When Lightning Strikes.”

Veterans Dario Beretta (guitars), Davide Dell’Orto (vocals) and Simone Cappato (bass) will be joined by newcomers Emanuele Laghi (keyboards) and Paolo Pirola (drums), plus a few special guest musicians.

According to guitarist/composer Dario Beretta, the new record, called “Run With The Wolf” and scheduled for early 2015 on My Kingdom Music, will be “a very straightforward, direct album. After a concept so complex and thought-out like 'When Lightning Strikes,' we thought it was the right moment to do something very immediate and energetic. There are also a couple of songs that make use of traditional Irish melodies and chord progressions, something we’ve never done before. As a life-long fan of Thin Lizzy, I’m pretty excited to be finally able to incorporate those influences in our sound." More...

Madball Posts New Album In-Studio Video

After releasing a lyric video for the "DNA" track, NYHC outfit Madball has posted an in-studio video for the upcoming album "Hardcore Lives."

"Hardcore Lives" is set to be released on June 27th, 2014 via Nuclear Blast and was tracked & engineered by Unearth guitarist Ken Susi and mixed & mastered by long time collaborator Zeuss. Iconic frontman, Freddy Cricien, explains the album title as follows:

"I shouted 'Hardcore Lives' on Madball's first release, 'Ball Of Destruction' - I was twelve then. It wasn't pre planned or written down... it was an ad-lib that I just threw out there and we kept it! Back then there was no choice really, not the way we were recording - two track live at Don Fury's... NYHC style! I feel the sentiment behind the expression still holds true today, maybe even more so. Hence the reason we finally chose to use it as a title.

"Sure, it's about waving the flag for our genre/culture, etc. - I've always felt that 'we as a scene' had to scream just a lil louder... to be heard! That said, »Hardcore Lives« at least to us, is not just about a cool 'catchphrase' - it's about that rebellious spirit that doesn't give in... In life, music, whatever. It's about growing, evolving, and maintaining your integrity in the process. It's about family, overcoming adversity, and respect. All the things that matter inside and outside of the music realm. It's for everyone and anyone with an open mind and heart." More...
