Varego Shares New Single

Italian post prog trio Varego recently announced their return to the scene and today they are proud to unveil the details of their new self-titled album, "Varego," out on June 11th, 2021.

To celebrate and to give a first taste of their new sound, the band presents the first single and visualizer for "Limbo," which can be seen below.

"Limbo was the first track on the new album that we created. The powerful bass intertwines with heavy rock guitar riffs, while the drums bring us back to a connatural rhythm.

"The lyrics talk about all those stalemates in our lives, where we think we are conditioned by events but in reality it is us and our fears that cause this state of life: by destroying them we can become the food for our dreams," says the band. More...

Suidakra To Release New Album In June

German/Celtic death metallers, Suidakra, have just finished working on their new album, "Wolfbite," which is set for release on June 25 via MDD Records.

Musically, after more than 25 years of band history, Suidakra has succeeded in presenting a mixture of their entire past work with a decidedly fresh breeze, giving the impression that the band has virtually risen from a fountain of youth.

Wolfbite is bursting with power, uncompromisingness and joy of playing, and from the very first note, any scepticism about whether Suidakra still sound like Suidakra as 2021 vanishes. More information about the nine songs on this upcoming masterpiece will be available soon.

A glimpse of the front cover, which as always is the visual realisation of the album concept by Kris Verwimp, can be seen below. More...

Massacre Signs With Nuclear Blast

Nearly four decades after their unholy conception, masters of Floridian death metal, Massacre, have found a diabolical union with Nuclear Blast Records with plans to release their fourth studio album, and first in seven years, later this year.

Commenting on the signing, vocalist Kam Lee states:

"I would first like to give my appreciation to Nuclear Blast for signing Massacre. It’s a long time dream of mine to be a part of the metal family under the NB flag and I am even more so grateful that it’s with my signature band. We have a lot of plans for the future of Massacre, and what a great place to be making such a proper return other than one of the best independent metal labels in the world."

Bassist Michael Borders adds:

"It's a privilege at this point in our careers to be associated with the big name in metal labels, we did our best to make this a proper Massacre release, an authentic sounding representation of a band we started over thirty years ago." More...

Aborted Working On New Album

Belgian deathgrind veterans Aborted has checked in with an update on their Facebook page confirming that they are in the studio working on a new album, their first since the 2018 release, "TerrorVision." A message from drummer Ken Bedene reads as follows:

"When working on this record, we actually had the plan to jam with the band for a good week before tracking to really flesh out the songs. Well... we all know what happened last year, so we were left with the choice to wait or to try something different.

"I think all of us wanted to avoid the thought of 'the pandemic is going to lessen our album quality'. Luckily for us, we’ve written music apart from each other for over 10 years now, so the writing process wasn’t too much of a change; recording, however, was a bit different.

"As far as drums go, finding a studio, room, and an engineer who can work intense death metal is a must for us. We were fortunate enough to work with Zack Ohren and find a way to work around the pandemic to actually get a record that I think everyone will be insanely stoked on. I for one was very excited to finally get a chance to work with Zach, since I’ve lived in California my whole life and known of Zach’s work for half of it.

"Trust me when I tell you that not only did we pull off the covid record, but we managed to pull off one of our strongest records to date and I can’t wait for you all to hear it."

Vokonis Frontman Takes Us On An "Odyssey"

No matter how much metal evolves, there will always be a place for the Sabbath influenced grooves and Lovecraftian horror themes. So it is with Vokonis, the three piece from the Swedish town of Borås, who in just a few weeks will release their fourth album, "Odyssey" through The Sign Records.

To find out more about the record, the band, the influence of seventies progressive rock bands, artwork and more, I spoke with guitarist/vocalist Simon Ohlsson. You can watch the interview in full below. More...

Year Of No Light To Release New Album In July

Year Of The Light are celebrating their 20th anniversary as a band this year. On the occasion of this, Pelagic Records are releasing not only their new album "Consolamentum" on 2nd July, but a wooden box set containing their entire discography of 5 studio albums, several split EPs, and the collaboration with Belgian composer Dirk Serries from the 'Live At Roadburn' recordings, on 12 vinyl records.

Sometimes adding more weight to something that's already heavy feels like relief. When the staggering build-up of layer on layer of guitars and synths towards the end of 'Aletheia' reaches its boiling point, when the tension and drama become too suffocating to bear, the sudden discharge into the following upbeat part, based on a single power chord gallopping away at the speed of no light feels strangely alleviative. This is the moment when the feet leave the ground, and the bones of the arms of the heretic crack, being pulled up in a strappado behind his back. One of the most agonizing and arguably one of the greatest moments in heavy music of the past decade.

Year Of No Light's lengthy, sprawling compositions of towering walls of guitars and sombre synths irradiate a sense of dire solemnity and spiritual gravity, and couldn't be a more fitting soundtrack for such grim medieval scenarios. But there is also the element of absolution, regeneration, elevation, transcendence in the face of death. "Consolamentum" is dense, rich and lush and yet somehow feels starved and deprived.

New single "Réalgar," described by the band as, "a mineral dive in the interzone, a journey between several realities and a confrontation with our inner demons" is out now. More...
