Unearthing the Metal Underground: Intolerance

While the disturbing sounds may be appealing to death metal fiends the world over, and it’s good to see the abundance of bands paying homage to the classic eighties and nineties era of death metal, the adoration has led to a noticeable over-saturation of the scene. Spain’s Intolerance, very intentionally, is not here to re-invent the wheel of death metal. But the Spaniards stand apart because of their straight-forward songwriting and jam-room feel. They’ve released a demo and a thoroughly enjoyable EP since their inception in 2015, and they’re finally about to unleash their debut full-length. More...

Depleted Uranium Unveils New Animated Video

Toronto’s Depleted Uranium recently unleashed their new album "Origins" on January 28th. The record is a fast, aggressive journey with existential lyrics delivered with full throttle vocals, coupled with technical melodies and harmonies that bring you to your bad place. It is meant to obliterate negative energy and make life a better place as everyone has something to scream for or about.

Earlier this month, the band unveiled the first half of their two-part animated video story with their track "Alpha Particles" and today they continue the storytelling with its second segment "Beta Particles".

The band adds:

"Lyrically, this song is about being socially marginalized. For whatever reason. It's about society's aim to "cure" those who are different. To assimilate or destroy vs accept, by any means necessary. Musically, it was born when we were starting to solidify in our song writing and the process was fairly quick. The big transition in the middle was due to our 4-track recorder eating the tape of the first demo recording and when we listened back, it made the song. Once Blair (2nd guitar) joined, it was the song which began highlighting the simplified dual guitar harmonies." More...

Evergrey Reveals New Album Details

Gothenburg’s finest export of darkness, Evergrey, enters an bewildering new chapter in the band’s history with their thirteenth studio album and Napalm Records debut, "A Heartless Portrait (The Orphean Testament)," to be released on May 20, 2022 via Napalm Records. This overwhelming journey through progressive heaviness and searing emotionality reaches new heights and is preceded by the arrival of the soaring first single "Save Us," in which heavy prog and melancholic beauty climax in a soulful chorus that proves Evergrey to be top songwriters in their genre!

The pounding album opener reflects everything the new full-length stands for, as it kicks in immediately with stunning guitar work and unveils a chorus sure to top the annals of Evergrey history. Listen carefully and you will hear the voices of hundreds of fans who were invited by Evergrey to send recordings of their voices to later provide group vocals for the track – making their everlasting mark on Evergrey history.

For the astonishing music video, the five-piece teamed up with longtime companion Patric Ullaeus to create a bewitching visual experience that exemplifies Evergrey.

Tom S. Englund on "Save Us":
"'Save Us' is about us. It’s about you and I. It’s about how I see our minds becoming hostages in a world where painting optimal portraits of ourselves is more important than being who we really are. It’s about my observation of watching people around me who are feeling that they’re not good enough for the world, or for themselves. I’m afraid we’re lost, and I think we need to help each other to find our way back to what is important, to rediscover a true sense of self. As we, as artists, also contribute to content and social media as a livelihood, it’s about the paradox of being caught in a world which is hard to free yourself from. I can only wish that our music brings some balance to that equation." More...

Crowbar Shares New Music Video

Next week, New Orleans, Louisiana sludge metal trailblazers Crowbar will drop their long-awaited new full-length, "Zero And Below" via MNRK Heavy. In advance of the record’s release, today the band unleashes a video for "Bleeding From Every Hole." You can check it out below.

Notes Windstein, "I really love this track. It’s kind of strange that it was written before the Covid epidemic because the song is basically what so many people went through in a metaphorical way during the shutdowns, loss of work, and social life. Things seemed so bad that no matter which way you turned it was the wrong direction. I wanted to express that there are people that feel that things are hopeless… but they do get better in the end. Your inner strength is there. It needs to be let out. I hope everyone enjoys the song. It is really one of my favorites." More...

Firebreather Streaming New Album

Swedish trio Firebreather are streaming their forthcoming album "Dwell In The Fog" ahead of release today via Metal Injection. You can listen to it below.

Gothenburg, Sweden trio Firebreather‘s 2019 RidingEasy Records debut album Under a Blood Moon was a powerhouse that most certainly established the band‘s incendiary potential. But none of us would be prepared for the suffocating onslaught that is "Dwell in the Fog." While that album was in-your-face and raw, Dwell in the Fog rumbles and rages with a fury the band had only hinted at previously.

Firebreather has a streamlined focus on driving, symphonic riffs in the vein of High on Fire, Inter Arma and their tour- and label-mates Monolord. The guitar and bass tones are, quite simply, entrancing. Paired with vocalist/guitarist Mattias Nööjd‘s guttural yet melodic howls and drummer Axel Wittbeck‘s groove based rhythms, their entire sound flows like thick, viscous lava.

"The album is a cathartic journey inwards and a musical continuation from Under A Blood Moon, but with more emphasis on groove and feel," Nööjd says. From the first notes of album opener "Kiss Of Your Blade" you‘ll know exactly what he means.

Like their preceding two albums, "Dwell In The Fog" was also recorded and mixed by engineer Oskar Karlsson at Elementstudion in Gothenburg. The band is joined by new bassist Nicklas Hellqvist on this album, who seems to have increased the thunder rumble tenfold.

From the aforementioned album opener "Kiss Of Your Blade," with its droning opening chords over a rollicking tom pattern, the band quickly shifts gears into a head bobbing, serpentine riff with a transcendent melodic hook. Elsewhere, as on the title track and "Weather The Storm" rapid-fire hummable riffs come and go in an ever-shifting mass of devastating swirling churn. It‘s like the band has such an endless supply of great hooks that to, ahem, dwell for too long on any one would undo their constantly building momentum. That they somehow give each song, and the album as a whole, a streamlined and cohesive, monolithic groove is testament to their skill. And, proof that the album must be absorbed in its entirety to experience the overwhelming swaying and lunging low end growl that drives the band‘s most captivating work to date. More...

Saphath To Release Debut Album In April

Incoming Russian death dealers Saphath will infiltrate the global metal scene this spring with the release of their debut, full-length album, "Ascension of the Dark Prophet" on April 8th. Today, the band has revealed the record's first single via a lyric video for "The Raven." The song is available now on Apple Music, Spotify and all streaming services.

Commenting on the single, vocalist Alexey Duraev states:

"The song is a reflection on 'The Raven' by Edgar Allan Poe, that began from the questioning of why the main hero stays home alone? What if there was a plague wreaking havoc on the streets of his city? Today's world can relate to it. The song is half Poe's lyrics and half mine, written in the same meter, with amazing music by the band and a stylish animated video by Alexey (Miran) Razorenov and Alexey Popov."

Hailing from the city of Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk on the Sakhalin Island in far east Russia, Saphath's interpretation of death metal is influenced by metallic predecessors Moonspell, Dark Tranquility, ScepticfFesh, Behemoth and Cradle of Filth and melds elements of death, black and gothic metal with dark symphonic ensembles. Death defies boundaries, and so do Saphath. More...
