Soulfly To Record New Album

Soulfly have announced that they will be entering the studio in January to record the follow-up to 2015's ‘Archangel’, which will most likely be released in summer 2018 via Nuclear Blast Entertainment.

The as of yet untitled album will be recorded with Josh Wilbur who also worked with Max Cavalera's other band Killer Be Killed, as well as heavy-hitters Lamb Of God and Gojira.

In an interview with Backstage Axxess, Cavalera said:
"I'm actually writing right now. I'm collecting the riffs right now and getting the ideas." and added: "I'm excited, because I think the album will have a little bit of a return to some tribal sounds that I haven't done since ‘Prophecy’. So that'll be cool, to return to some of that. And then the rest of the album will be a continuation of ‘Archangel’; a lot of people like ‘Archangel’. And, of course, I think that it will be also somehow be influenced by ‘Psychosis’, 'cause ‘Psychosis’ was such a cool record that I'm sure that somewhere we'll have the influence of that on top of it too.”

In another interview with the No Limits Music Show, he explained that the next Soulfly album will be:

"... deeply tribal, very spiritual. There's a concept. I cannot tell you much about it, 'cause it's kind of a surprise. But there is a concept behind the record, and I have not done a record with a concept like this since ‘Roots’. So this one has got the same kind of feeling that ‘Roots’ has."

Stay tuned for more information in due course…

Thrashback Thursday: Satanic Rites

I've said before how despite the name, Thrashback Thursday won't be entirely dedicated to thrash metal. In today's case, we're making an ever so slight departure from the style, to look at one of the most influential proto black metal bands ever, all the more impressive when you consider they never released an album. Hellhammer was formed by Thomas Gabriel Fischer in Switzerland in 1981 and would release three demos over three years before transforming into the much more critically revered, Celtic Frost. This week, we're looking at the title track from their third and final demo, "Satanic Rites," which was their first to feature the recently passed bassist Martin Eric Ain.

While many point to "Messiah" as the essential Hellhammer track which sums up the band (and perhaps it does,) "Satanic Rites" does perhaps just as much in this respect. It begins with a build which would be more atmospheric were it not for the poor production quality, a staple trait of Hellhammer and indeed the early black metal genre which they helped mold. Before long, it explodes into a catchy but nonetheless chaotic riff, accompanied by the grunting and shrieking of Tom Fisher (aka Tom Warrior.) Warrior would later claim in the "A Dying God" documentary that he was embarrassed by the lyrics to this song and a scan over them reveals why; A series of stanzas which are perverse, yet oddly cringe worthy. While BDSM participants would no doubt find delight in the lines, "Be a good girl, And just do what I say, I whip you 'till you faint," less welcomed are lyrics about cutting off children's legs.

All of this however is what made Hellhammer great. At the time, such lyrics were even more shocking than they are now and had it been Hellhammer that signed with Noise Records rather than its successor Celtic Frost, where Warrior really came into his own as a superb lyricist, the PMRC would have been ringing wet at the prospect of taking them on. The messy sound and raw production was a result of young men (Martin Ain was only fifteen at the time) still learning their craft and budget contraints, which just like Venom before them and Bathory around the same time, proved to be an extraordinarily vital component to the Norwegian black metal sound. Ex-Motograter Drummer Blasts The Band’s Guitarist

Former Motograter drummer Noah “Shark” Robertson has now issued a revised statement regarding his forced departure from the group. Previously Robertson had issued an abbreviated version of the statement. His latest is a very lengthy read, in it he alleges that the Motograter's guitarist Matt “Nuke” Nunes repeatedly mismanaged money earned by the band to feed an alleged drug habit. An excerpt from that statement can be read below:

“I gave my life to this band for 4 years. I have never been compensated. Every single tour that we have done, Nuke has taken ALL of the money. At the end of one tour in particular, he let members disperse without any money in their pockets, whatsoever; begging for train tickets and bus tickets from their family and friends – while he went to Disneyland.

The truth is, most of the money has gone to feed his insane, insatiable drug addiction. Crack, heroin, meth, whatever he can get his greedy hands on. There were many times when we would be stranded, waiting for hours, while he was off scoring drugs. His drug use caused him to behave in a manner that is inconsistent with the rest of civilized society.

Violent outbursts, screaming at band members on a constant basis. Paranoid, delusional behavior. Angry outbursts on stage. Yelling at members during live performances and even kicking them or pushing them. It was a constant battle between Nuke and I. Me constantly trying to battle against horrible decisions and bad business. If the money was handled professionally and correctly, we could not only pay our debts, we would be well within our means to compensate band members for their time and effort.”

Another excerpt finds him explaining that his exit from the band came as the result of a heated altercation with Nunes while on tour:

“Matthew “Nuke” Nunes got in my face, screaming and threatening me, saying I’m a “piece of shit” and a “little bitch”. Threatening me with violence. I had made a snide remark about him losing my driver’s licence, which he did, but to be honest I was half kidding. After all, it was a major inconvenience to me, especially being on tour traveling the country. It was also partially my fault, as I should have never trusted him with it in the first place.

After he made a huge scene in the hotel lobby, screaming and ranting and throwing a temper tantrum, I grabbed my things and proceeded to take off. I did mention “This tour is over.” I said a few things in the heat of the moment, definitely. For a moment I contemplated going home, but in reality I just needed to blow off some steam and cool off.

I thought about my friends, the fans and the promoters and I knew we needed to finish this tour. We had just played fifty-something shows and there were only about 6 or 7 to go. As anyone who’s toured knows, especially in a van, it sometimes gets to the point where even the way somebody eats their cereal in the morning can drive you berserk. We’re a family, but we all hate each other at various moments.

It’s just the way it is. I immediately returned to the hotel and waited in the lobby for at least an hour or two. I was messaging every member of the band. Everyone was ignoring me. A few of them even walked right past me without saying a word. I then saw on social media that they were already telling people I had quit and that they were seeking a replacement. This came as quite a shock.” More...
