Swallow The Sun Parts With Keyboardist

Finnish melodic death / doom group Swallow The Sun is now parting ways with keyboardist Aleksi Munter, who issued this statement:

"Tomorrow's show in Houston, TX will be my last show with Swallow the Sun and mark my departure from the band. I came to this decision during late summer 2016, when I had a burn out which I'm still struggling with. For the past 6 years I've been touring and working so much that it's a small miracle this didn't happen earlier. Not wanting to leave the guys hanging, and looking for some kind of closure for myself, I decided to force myself to do the shows for this year - even though I barely could find the energy for 1 show, let alone 40 - and then step down.

"In addition to burning out, I also sort of had enough, which I believe is as valid a reason as any. I've always had things I've had a passion for, but never could find the time or the energy to follow up on: photography, graphic design, my own music, among others. I will first take some time off, and then pursue these things I've pushed aside for all these years.

"Then there is my beautiful soon-to-be wife Olenka, whom I have barely seen for the last year or two. With Aleah's tragic and untimely passing I became painfully aware of the fact that nothing lasts forever, and I want to cherish the days we have while we're both healthy and well. I'm afraid I have already damaged my own health, and I don't want to end up there again. More...

Pit Stories: Protecting The Van

Ready for a new Pit Story metal fans? This week's come courtesy of Canadian group Malacoda, and moves away from the pit and onto the road where bands spend countless hours travelling to bring you the craziest shows in the music industry!

Tour van break-ins are a fact of life for metal bands, and there's usually not a month gone by that we don't post about some crowd funding campaign to recover lost items after the latest robbery.

Some bands have taken up preventative security measures to prevent such activity - but they don't always work out as planned. Brad Casarin, guitarist of Malacoda, recalls his road story like this:

We were in Vancouver playing a show and the venue was on Hastings. Anybody that's been to Vancouver knows this is one of the worst areas in North America for drugs and drug users. After the gig half of us got to sleep in a hotel room while two of us volunteered to sleep in the van in front of the venue.

Around three in the morning we are woken up by a hand reaching into the van - older vans used to have these push out windows that you could just squeeze your hand through. The hand was trying to unlatch the pull up lock! Luckily I remembered I had packed a cO2 cartridge BB hand gun. So I reached for it as the hand was feeling around for the lock and I unloaded it 10 - 12 times about three inches away into his hand.

The perpetrator screamed in agony trying to get out of the tight fit he had maneuvered his hand into, all the while screaming "Please, oh God, please stop!" from outside the van. It was then that I recognized the voice as our drummer who had come back to the van to grab something. His swollen BB filled hand eventually healed up in a week and he could drum again at full capacity!

Malacoda's six track EP "Ritualis Aeterna" was released last week (December 2nd, 2016) and can be streamed in full below. More...

2017 Grammy Nominees Revealed

It's Grammy Award nomination time again, which is always an odd experience for metal fans. There's only one actual metal category - Best Metal Performance - and no category for actual metal albums to win.

Best Rock Album occasionally has heavy metal releases, but usually only of the most well known bands that aren't representative of the best metal had to offer in any given year.

In a move that literally left the audience scratching their heads, earlier this year Ghost took home the Best Metal Performance for the 2016 Grammy Awards.

Today the nominees are announced for the upcoming 59th annual 2017 Grammy Awards. These songs are now in the running for Best Metal Performance:

- "Shock Me" by Baroness
- "Silvera" by Gojira
- "Rotting In Vain" by Korn
- "Dystopia" by Megadeth
- "The Price Is Wrong" by Periphery

Alright, it's prediction time: who do you think is going to win the 2017 Grammy Best Metal Performance?

Gojira's "Magma" album also managed to land in the Best Rock Album category alongside the likes of Blink-192, Weezer, and Panic! At The Disco.

Stick To Your Guns Releases New Video

Orange County hardcore band Stick To Your Guns has debuted a brand new video for “Better Ash Than Dust.” The song is the title track from the band’s recently released EP that is available now from Pure Noise Records.

Never ones to mince words, Stick To Your Guns takes a bold political and social stand against racism, police brutality, corporate greed, complacency and overall American gluttony at the expense of others in this seething new video.

“With the eyes of the world on what is happening in North Dakota and the Dakota Access Pipeline, I think this a perfect time to release this video,” says vocalist Jesse Barnett. “So much of what is happening to the indigenous people of what we call America is not only horrifying, but down right unacceptable. This is not just an injustice against these people, their land and their water, but it's a perfect example of how what we call a civilized society can, more often than not, be barbaric and disgusting. The support that the whole world has shown for Standing Rock has been and inspiring thing to watch and this band stands in solidarity with them.”

In support, Stick To Your Guns, Pure Noise Records and Good Fight Entertainment will each be donating a dollar per share, up to a thousand dollars each, to Standing Rock front line warriors. Stick To Your Guns recently wrapped up the U.S. “Better Ash Than Dust Tour,” and will be headed to Australia and Europe in early 2017. More...

'De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas' is widely considered one of the most influential black metal albums of all time, and this is the first time in history this classic album from 1994 is performed live in its entirety." "'Hellfire' is a depiction primarily based on the tragic events surrounding the Malaysian airline flight MH17. Despite the storyline's foundation, the lyrical and visual narrative transcends into other pertinent, global subject matters. Civil unrest, guerrilla warfare, media propaganda, and social inequalities are just some examples of the multifaceted issues marbled throughout 'Hellfire'. A poignant illustration of an unfortunate yet timeless reality." More...

Heavens Decay Premieres Full New Album Early

Next Monday, December 12th marks the release of "The Great Void Of Mystery," the debut album from Heavens Decay.

A week ahead of that drop date, we're letting you in on the mystery of the void early with a full, exclusive album premiere! Check out "The Great Void Of Mystery" below, and if you dig it, be sure to pre-order your own copy here.

Led by Julio Viterbo (Tormentor, Shub Niggurath, Cenotaph) the music is primarily NWOBHM-inspired music infused with the range of influences from Viterbo's impressive career as a musician.

After a long and illustrious path in death metal as a guitarist in the aforementioned bands, Viterbo decided to reconnect with the classic heavy metal that enveloped him as a youth and gave meaning to his life. This change in direction led to the launch of Heavens Decay.

After composing several songs, Viterbo invited Oscar Clorio to join him on the journey as drummer and the pair then recruited Nick Hernandez (Stone Magnum) as vocalist. The songs were completed via the Internet, as Oscar lives in Mexico City, while Julio and Nick call Chicago home.

Finally in July 2016, Heavens Decay recorded "The Great Void Of Mystery" in Chicago's Minbal studios. The album was engineered by Matt Russell and mastered by Dan Swanö in Unisound studios in Sweden. Artwork was created by Arturo Vargas at Souls Crematorium Art Studio and the full track listing is as follows: More...

Arduini/Balich Announces Debut Album

Arduini/Balich is the result of two very powerful figures in in the metal scene. Victor Arduini needs no introduction, being one of the founding members of Fates Warning. The same can be said for Brian "Butch" Balich, the mighty voice of Argus.

The project has released a preview clip showcasing the forthcoming debut album "Dawn of Ages." While only a mere fraction of the nearly 80-minute long record, the teaser video serves as a taste of what's to come when Cruz Del Sur Music releases this "doom-laden progressive wall of metal" next year. Check it out further below.

"Dawn Of Ages" will be released on February 24, 2017 as a deluxe 6-panel digipack embellished by a wonderful, original Michael Cowell's (Alunah) artwork (shown below). The vinyl version will be released as a gatefold colored vinyl double LP with three incredible cover songs as a bonus: Uriah Heep's "Sunrise", Beau Brummels' "Wolf Of Velvet Fortune" and Black Sabbath's "After All (The Dead)."

"Dawn Of Ages" is one of the most ambitious records ever released on Cruz Del Sur Music. A monumental piece of music on the level of While Heaven Wept or Atlantean Kodex's releases. A rollercoaster of emotions, an album that captures the collisions of two worlds, progressive and doom. The final result is a really amazing journey inside human soul. Through six original compositions that last for more than an hour, the audience will be captured and hypnotized by the eclectically familiar Victor's guitar melodies empowered by Butch's passionate interpretation. Indeed "Dawn of Ages" is an album that could have been easily recorded in the mid/late 70s for the total dedication that transpires through each and every note of it. It is not an album that wants to please any old or new trend in metal, rather an intimate expression of two musicians who have always put their passion for heavy music before anything else.

The track listing for the album is:

1. The Fallen
2. Forever Fade
3. Into Exile
4. The Wraith
5. Beyond the Barricade
6. The Gates of Acheron
7. Sunrise (Uriah Heep Cover)
8. Wolf of Velvet Fortune (Beau Brummels Cover)
