Imperial Triumphant Recording Album

Following last year's "Abyssal Gods" album and the "Shrine To The Trident Throne" compilation from 2014 (reviewed here), Imperial Triumphant is now working on another full-length release. The band comments:

"Heads up from the Imperial camp - we've been quiet as we've been writing the next full length. It's coming into shape and surprising us every step of the way. We will be recording with Max Gorelick as official second guitarist so anticipate a lot of dissonant counterpoint. This record will be a grand statement, solidifying our avant death music style and New York art deco/metropolis aesthetic." More...

The Best Heavy Metal Christmas Songs

It's a yearly tradition for metal bands, sometimes of the very extreme death/black variety, to pull out a few tongue-in-cheek Christmas covers around this time.

While most are just jokes or aren't pulled off with much effort, there have been a handful of legitimately awesome heavy metal Christmas albums released, and we're going to show you the ones worth hearing.

If you've got a significant other or family member who insists on Christmas music this time of year, these are the albums you want to pull out to really give them a shock!

Death Metal Christmas - "Hellish Renditions Of Christmas Classics"

Back in 2013, Hate Eternal bass maverick J.J. Hrubovcak released a twistedly unholy rendition of some of the seasons darkest hymns. The EP as a whole is a bit hit or miss, but that death metal rendition of "Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy" is absolutely killer. For all the hype this got at the time, it's a shame there's never been a follow-up release.

August Burns Red - "Sleddin' Hill"

While I'm not a huge August Burns Red fan personally, this Christmas album is absolutely phenomenal, and filled to the brim with metallic recreations of classic holiday tunes along with some originals. It's also instrumental, which is a plus, as the instrumentation here is top-notch and the band puts a heavy spin on these songs to a much better degree than many heavy metal Christmas albums that came before.

Gloson Releasing "Grimen" Album

Art of Propaganda has set February 13th, 2017 as the international release date for Gloson's debut album, "Grimen." Earlier in 2015, Gloson's originally self-released "Yearwalker" EP was also reissued by Art of Propaganda.

Although post-metal might be a very millennial creation, with peaks and valleys of creativity across an expansive spectrum, "Yearwalker" proved that fire still rumbles down below and newcomers can still offer new twists on an oft-tired subgenre. But now, with the release of "Grimen," Gloson shows that not only was that EP not a fluke, but more so that powerful, poignant art can emerge from humble beginnings and that "post-metal" is merely a springboard for bolder, more daring excursions into the beyond.

The first glimpse into Gloson's "Grimen" comes in the form of a special lyric video for the track "Cringe," which can be viewed below. The album's full track listing is as follows:

1. Prowler
2. Fabulist
3. Antlers
4. Cringe
5. Specter
6. Embodiment More...

Dawnbringer Streaming "XX"

Today Dawnbringer streams the entirety of "XX," set for international release on December 23rd via Ektro Records. Like many funerals, Dawnbringer's "XX" is sudden, solemn, and brief, a dreamlike twist of old faces, bizarre incantations, and false comforts. It meditates on the nature of death and the infinity of grief, as well as the visceral climax of a closed box being lowered into the ground forever.

Regarding Dawnbringer’s future, bandleader Chris Black managed to say this: "Clues are more interesting than explanations. Too bad subtlety is out of style. But that has always been Dawnbringer’s comfort zone. It’s great that [2010’s] 'Nucleus' turned out to be so popular, but I had a strange feeling at the time that something had malfunctioned. I’m glad we’ve been able to deflect that sensation back toward the audience in the meantime. For now, if confusion will be our epitaph, I gratefully accept."

2. Into The Maze
3. North By North
4. Earth

Joakim Brodén Voted 5th In Czech Singing Contest

Joakim Brodén, front man of Sabaton, was voted fifth in the Czech national singing competition "Ceský slavík" on November 26th. Nuclear Blast comments on the event:

"This came as a huge surprise to the Czech domestic music scene, as well as it became a source of satisfaction for Czech metalheads as Sabaton is hugely popular in the Czech Republic. Brodén got 9826 points, trailing by roughly 2,000 to a fourth place.

"Brodén, whose mother is natural born Czech and later emigrated to Sweden during communist era, has two passports both Swedish and Czech. His popularity stems not only from being a frontman of a very successful metal act, but also, of course from his cool and friendly onstage behavior. Therefore, he was able to qualify into the top 6 final in the singer’s category, pushing aside big names of the Czech music scene."

Brodén’s fifth place is sort of a miracle of its own, pointing to metal becoming part of mainstream culture and loyalty and dedication of metalheads!

Joakim made a video to thank his Czech fans. You can watch it here (in English): More...

The Mute Gods Reveals New Album

Nick Beggs (Steven Wilson, Steve Hackett), Roger King (Steve Hackett) and Marco Minnemann (Joe Satriani, Aristocrats) will return as The Mute Gods with forthcoming second album "...Tardigrades Will Inherit The Earth."

This sophomore output is set for release on February 24th, 2017. Following the release of 2016's debut album "Do Nothing Till You Hear From Me" and a Progressive Music Award 2016 win in the Vanguard category, the trio deliver adventurous rock effort infused with timely perspectives on the state of religion, politics, media, and the environment.

The Mute Gods examine these and other major queries facing our planet on a second album for InsideOut Music. It's a darker, deeply thought provoking follow-up that picks up from where the first album left off, examining societal control mechanisms and looking at the inevitable outcomes should we continue down dark, dogmatic pathways.

Musically, the album is an expansive rock effort with a heavier, more metal-oriented focus than its predecessor, yet steeped in melodicism and addictive hooks.

Nick Beggs had this to say: "I know I'm not the only person who feels the way I do. Other people understand the state of the world and what's at stake as we make one terrifyingly bad decision after another. This album asks people to take off their rose-tinted spectacles and consider the reality facing us. At this point in my career, I feel strongly that it's important to use music as a vehicle for truth, not just feel-good entertainment." More...
