Pit Stories: Marshmallow Girl In The Lion Onesie

Remember the chicken guy who used to go to all the Baltimore/D.C. area shows in a full body chicken costume, or that masked midget who would order people around in the mosh pits of California?

Rock and metal shows are known for their interesting characters, but its not just the die hard fans or musicians themselves who show up in interesting attire... sometimes its the journalists like us who cover the shows!

For this week's Pit Story we've got our own Amy Dyer sharing how she likes to hit up music festivals and live shows and make an impression wearing something just a bit out of the ordinary:

When I photograph gigs, I take a bag of marshmallows with me and throw them into the crowd during the wait between acts. I have now earned a reputation as Marshmallow Girl. I once went to a gig as a punter and someone recognized me as marshmallow girl and bought me a pint XD. More funny than interesting but it's still makes me laugh.

I've gained a similar reputation at festivals when I spend the entire weekend in a Lion onesie. Andy Copping (owner of Download) has no idea what my name is but does know I'm the photographer in a lion onesie XD.

Amy was kind enough to share a few photos of this lion outfit below... including one where she's meeting a very bemused Marilyn Manson!

What's the strangest thing you've seen someone wear to a festival, and what's your preferred show-going attire? Let us know in the comments section below!

Tyrants Blood Dishes On Vinyl Re-Issue

Originally released in 2013, a new vinyl edition of "Into The Kingdom Of Graves" from Tyrants Blood is due to drop via Tridoid Records.

Coming very soon (December 23rd), this vinyl edition features liner notes from guitarist Marco Banco along with a digital download of the "Coven" compilation release.

We had the pleasure of originally premiering music off this classic extreme metal record three years back, and can't wait for the new version to hit the hands of a hungry fan base.

With that re-issue just about here, it probably shouldn't come as much of a surprise that Tyrants Blood also has new material in the works and lots to share about what's been keeping the band busy lately. Read on for a full new interview with Marco Banco about all things Tyrants Blood! More...

Reality Slap Posts "Lone Wolf"

As War Records prepares to release the new "Limitless" EP from Portuguese hardcore outfit Reality Slap in January, a new track titled "Lone Wolf" has come online. The band comments:

"'Lone Wolf' is about soul search. It's about trying to figure out what you are, and understanding what's important personally. It's about being okay with being yourself. Not following what's expected, not feeling ashamed. It's okay to be different and it's something to be proud of.

"We see it too many times happening in hardcore where you're expected to act in a certain way and say the same old thing, but that's not what this scene is all about. Rather than looking outside, I feel it's time people start looking and focusing on their own being in this sense and embracing how they feel and how they are. Be angry, make yourself be heard, this scene needs that."

War Records will issue "Limitless" on vinyl, CD, and digital formats this coming January 13th, 2017. More...

The Flight Of Sleipnir Releasing New Album

Following on the heels of 2014 album "V" (reviewed here), the 6th full-length album from The Flight Of Sleipnir will be titled "Skadi" and is coming January 20th, 2017. Record label Eisenwald comments:

"Taking inspiration from earlier recordings which work as the creative drive, they forge their trademark sounds ahead once again in Nordic spiked splendour wrapped in a new life-form. 'Skadi' creates another extraordinary venture, full of extreme metal and polarizing tension.

"There is a certain fresh simplicity in structure, though the further you delve in, the more complex and soaring it becomes. From pulsing waves of doom & stoner, decorative rock and prog to expanding glances into folk spiked with black metal-esque sparks. Whether you consume it at an intimate campfire or throughout stormy evenings, with ‘Skadi’ they have created one of their most passionate and artistic recordings to date.

"'Skadi' was recorded during 2016 and then mixed/mastered by Clayton Cushman. It features the striking artwork courtesy of the band's own David Csicsely, that once again becomes a crucial force in The Flight of Sleipnir's artistic appeal." More...

Crowd Funding Campaign Setup For Team Rock Staff

Yesterday we reported about the various Team Rock staff - including members of the Metal Hammer print / online publication - losing their jobs as the company is in serious financial difficulty.

Today we learned that the employees were not notified in advance of this impending lack of employment, and many of the staff members discovered they had lost their jobs through social media.

A crowd funding campaign has now been setup to help those former employees, who have received no severance pay of any kind. You can contribute right here. Orange Goblin's Ben Ward comments:

"Today, 73 members of the Team Rock staff were told that the company is going into liquidation and that they are being made redundant with immediate effect with ZERO pay.

"These are good, hard-working, committed people that through Metal Hammer, Classic Rock, Prog Rock, TeamRock Radio and more, have supported the rock and heavy metal scene in this country for decades and now we, the rock community, need to pull together to help give something back. Please spare what you can so that everyone may enjoy the festive spirit." More...

Eths Disbanding, Announces Original Lineup Shows

Although it seemed like the band had a promising future, Eths is sadly calling it quits and lining up some final shows. Season Of Mist comments:

"Sad news for all fans of Eths. The French modern metal stars have announced the end of their career and are calling it quits. Season of Mist regrets to hear this decision, but of course fully respects it. We wish our long-time partners and personal friends for many years all the very best for their future as musicians and persons."

Eths had this to say: "These last few years, a number of ordeals slowly pushed us towards different musical yearnings while dulling the fun that we have had playing as a band. Eths has always been about honesty and fun, but we have to face the fact that our hearts are not in there anymore. Therefore we made the joined decision to call it quits - in order to fully focus on our separate musical endeavors and to find our joy in music again.

"From the bottom of our hearts, we want to extend our deepest thanks to all the fans, old and new, who supported the band through thick and thin. Thank you also to all musicians, road crews, bookers, radio DJs, directors, graphic designers, photographers, producers, journalists, and all other professionals of the music business, who helped us out in one way or another along the way. We have experienced unforgettable moments thanks to all of you and we will cherish those times forever. Just one more thing: you haven’t heard the last of the band yet and can expect one final surprise from Eths." More...

Asphyx Releases "Candiru" Video

Dutch doom / death metal division Asphyx continues to promote latest album, "Incoming Death," which was released at the end of September via Century Media Records and nominated as one of our best metal albums of the year.

Asphyx is now launching a new music video for the album's merciless opening track "Candiru." The clip was shot during a recent appearance at Turock Open Air festival in Essen, Germany and was edited by Maurice Swinkels / Younique Film, who most recently worked with Asphyx on the "Forerunners Of The Apocalypse" clip.

Vocalist Martin van Drunen comments: "'Candiru' is a no-nonsense, non-compromising 3 riff containing fast Asphyx death metal track. A gory story about a revolting little fish from the Amazon that can nest itself in human genitals to suck blood after it got there via the urine stream. Only removable through amputation, so be careful there were you relieve yourselves folks! The video was recorded at this year's Turock Open Air in Essen Germany, which we can almost call our second home. The very first time we ever rammed that tune on stage. We had a ball, as always, so hope you do too while watching this." More...

Borealis To Release Re-Recorded Debut Album

Canadian progressive power metal act Borealis will release a fully re-recorded version of the debut album "World Of Silence" on January 27th via AFM Records!

Dubbed "World Of Silence MMXVII" - the release is an entirely re-recorded and remixed version of the debut. Originally released in 2008, this 2016 remix now sees the songs officially made available through a label for the very first time! The diehard fanbase surely will be amazed by the massive improvement on sound and performance over the original recordings. "World Of Silence MMXVII" is a must have for all progressive power metal lovers!

"We were in talks with AFM Records about re-releasing ‘World Of Silence’ when we suddenly thought 'why not re-record the entire album for this occasion?'," Borealis singer/guitarist Matt Marinelli says.

"It was originally self-released in 2008. A lot has happened since then. The band has evolved a lot and two more albums were released in 2011’s ‘Fall From Grace’ and 2015’s ‘Purgatory’. So making this re-issue of ‘World Of Silence’ a representation of what Borealis is about in 2017 made sense for us. We are in the fortunate position that our drummer Sean Dowell runs his own studio, so recording, mixing/mastering didn’t cause any problems for us in this case.”

After finishing work on "World Of Silence MMXVII," Borealis has two more exciting projects for 2017: in April, the band will re-release their 2011 album "Fall From Grace" via AFM Records and has already continued songwriting for the upcoming new studio album, which will drop in Autumn 2017.

The track list for "World Of Silence MMXVII" is as follows:

1. Lost Voices
2. Midnight City
3. From The Fading Screams
4. Forget The Past
5. Eyes Of A Dream
6. World Of Silence
