Sunday Old School: Avenger

It seems to be a common sentiment that since the Midlands, Birmingham in particular, produced many of Britain's best heavy metal bands, it must have also been the hotbed of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal. While it did produce such excellent groups as Diamond Head and Cloven Hoof, the north east of England had perhaps just as many great names to their name, including such heavyweights as Venom, Raven and Tygers of Pan Tang. Speaking of both the Midlands and the north east, it was from the ashes of Leicester based band Blitzkrieg that another of Newcastle's heavy hitters emerged, who go by the name of Avenger.

Avenger was born when Brian Ross, Mick Moore and Gary Young, all former members of Blitzkrieg, decided to continue writing music together in 1982, along with guitarist Steve Bird. They would make their recording debut for the Neat Records compilation, "One Take No Dubs," for which they contributed the song, "Hot 'n' Heavy Express." This was to be their only recording with Bird, who quit shortly afterwards due to hearing problems. Nevertheless, the recording impressed the label enough to offer Avenger the opportunity to release their first single, which was released in October 1983 under the title, "Too Wild To Tame." More...

The Green River Burial Announces Final Album

The Green River Burial just issued this announcement about breaking up following the release of a final album:

"We’re calling it quits. It has been pretty quiet from our side for some time now, but that doesn't mean there hasn't been much going on for us. After a long time of contemplation regarding the future of this band, we came to a decision that while being one of the hardest to make as a band feels like the right thing to do.

"It is with honor and gratitude that we today announce the end of the 8 year long history of this band and the adventure it has taken everybody involved with it on.

"All of us who stand under the banner of TGRB now - as well as the ones that were part of this
band for some time - have been shaped by the things we were allowed to experience. We want to thank every friend we made on the way and every partner that enabled us to create, express and release our music and travel the world playing it.

"Over the recent years we have formed a very solid and productive constellation that made writing and playing music the most rewarding and fun it has ever been for us. At the same time we have been experimenting a lot with our sound embracing the new possibilities that suddenly opened.
As a result we have written a full-length heavy album over the past year that shows the band’s full capability and probably the best material we have ever created. More...

White Lung Singer Says Allegaeon Are "Dickless"

Vancouver, B.C based White Lung's frontwoman Mish Barber-Way has written an open letter to Allegaeon (via Clrvynt) concerning the band's recent decision to attempt to crowdfund their band via Patreon. In a foaming diatribe the indie-rock band's singer states:

"Dear Pussies,

"I just stepped off the airplane and the first text I got was a link to an article about your Patreon page. Apparently, you need some money to keep your metal career alive. Well congratulations, Allegaeon! You are officially the laziest, most pathetic, sub-human beta males in America.

"Rock isn’t what it used to be. Some guy named Neill already schooled you about that in Decibel Magazine. I’m not going to repeat what he said regarding over-saturation and personal responsibility. I’m just going to add the things he was too polite to say.

"Your begging video was a complete joke. As I listened to your TM [tour manager] spout off all the money you owed (over $8,700), I was shaking my head. If you were a small business, you would fold. I listened to your tour expenses, and you guys are such morons. You are paying people you don’t even need. First off, management. If your manager was doing his job, you wouldn’t be in this position. Fire him. Two, a driver? Can none of you drive?" More...
