Lacuna Coil Spellbinds Bristol

It's been a good year for new releases, with the likes of Superjoint and Brujeria returning, as well as new albums from Vader, Testament and Amon Amarth, it's a great time to be able to see some of the bands you love. Another group which released a new full length in 2016 was Lacuna Coil, whose latest release, "Delirium" has received some of the best reviews of their career and continues to lead them down the path of acclaim and success. The band are currently performing a headlining tour of the United Kingdom, which began in Bristol last night and which I was lucky enough to attend.

Opening the show was Italian Genus Ordinis Dei, a symphonic death metal band from Cremona in the Lombardy region. The group have a very strong presence, with frontman Nick K possessing some particular impressive talents in both his growling and guitar playing techniques. As impressive as they were, one can't help but feel it was perhaps the wrong tour for them, as there were several in the audience who weren't so enthusiastic, with a few even taking refuge in the toilets because it was, by their own admission, too heavy for them. It would be great to see Genus Ordinis Dei back in the UK soon on a tour where they might be appreciated a bit more, though it must be said that there were a good number in the crowd who did enjoy their brand of death metal. Beheaded Releasing New Album

Malta-based brutal death metal horde Beheaded will release a fifth full-length next year via Unique Leader Records. Entitled "Beast Incarnate," the infernal, eight-track production draws upon the brutal and melodic approach to 2012's "Never To Dawn" offering.

Welcoming drummer Davide Billia and guitarist Simone Brigo to the fold, the album seethes with the band's Mediterranean brand of brutality belting out caustic vocals, punishing riff and crushing drum sequences.

Recorded at MKII Recording Studio in Italy and mixed and mastered by Ronnie Björnström (Teadeat, Bone Gnawer, Aeon, Those Who Bring The Torture etc.) at Enhanced Audio Productions in Sweden, "Beast Incarnate" comes shrouded in the cover art of Gabriel Alegria Sabogal. More...

Shark Infested Daughters Streaming Full Album

Calgary, AB metalcore six piece Shark Infested Daughters just unleashed a sharknado of 10 assaulting tracks (plus a bonus acoustic version of first single "Tidebringer") with new album "These Tides, Our Tombs."

The album was produced by Rob Kukla (Arbitrator) with mixing plus mastering done by Sacha Laskow (Every Hour Kills). Revolving mostly around themes of love and loss, "The Tides, Our Tombs" is officially out today and can be heard in full below.

The band comments on this new release: "These Tides, Our Tombs" is a project that has been in the works for the last two years. Our entire goal was to create an album that challenged all of us musically plus would break down the genre walls placed upon us by our previous releases. On a lyrical standpoint, the album is an emotional roller coaster touching on subjects such as loss, suicide and depression. 'These Tides' symbolizes the negativity that surrounds us; 'Our Tombs' symbolizes how we choose to deal with them. It's either sink or swim. We hope the fans will feel the same raw emotion we put into writing this record." More...

Solitary Signs Record Deal

The U.K. thrash masters from Solitary have signed a new deal with UKEM Records, which will see the release a first brand new Solitary studio album in more than eight years. Asked about the signing with UKEM, Solitary’s front man Rich Sherrington had this to say:

“We are all very proud of the songs on this album and how it sounds. Working with producer Simon Efemey gave us a renewed belief in what we could achieve, so it was essential that we signed to a label with the same level of enthusiasm and with UKEM we have found the perfect match.

"Having been on U.K. labels previously we were keen for that to continue. 2017 is shaping up to be mega for us! Having the album come out in time for us playing at Hammerfest and then returning to London with Acid Reign is perfect. Hopefully there will be more to come after that as well, but having UKEM join our existing team of metal brothers can only mean that more people will get to hear and experience our metal.”

Details of the new Solitary album will be emerging soon, but today you can feast your eyes on the new video for ferocious single "Unidentified." The video was created by Andy Pilkington of Very Metal Art, who has also recently worked with Flotsam And Jetsam, and like the song itself it pulls no punches. More...

Magnum Releasing "The Valley Of Tears"

Renowned not only for powerful rock songs but also for countless moving ballads, the British rock icons from Magnum are set to surprise fans with a very special release at the very beginning of the coming year.

"The Valley Of Tears - The Ballads" has been scheduled for release on January 6th, 2017 (US/Canada: January 20th, 2017), an album featuring ten of the band's most accomplished ballads, all of them re-mastered and in parts even newly re-recorded and remixed.

Guitarist, composer and producer Tony Clarkin comments: "The release of this album was originally inspired by my daughter. A few months ago she asked me: ´Magnum have so many beautiful quiet numbers, why don't you put together a compilation highlighting some of the most powerful tracks?` Olly Hahn of Steamhammer/SPV was immediately taken by the concept, so I set down to work on it."

The release will be supported by selected shows in the U.K. and Ireland during the run-up to Christmas and a German/Swiss trek where Tony Clarkin and Bob Catley join the "Rock Meets Classic" tour starting March 30th, 2017. Festivals for summer 2017 will also be announced shortly. More...

SOiL Take Over Bristol

For those of who grew up at a certain time, there will always be songs that stay with us. As a twelve year old, it was impossible to escape "Here To Stay" by Korn, "Rollin'" by Limp Bizkit, "Last Resort" by Papa Roach and of my personal favourites "Halo" by SOiL. Even if the young rockers of the time didn't stay fans of these bands, the idea of seeing such anthems live was a very exciting prospect and one we couldn't wait to experience. However, I did remain a SOiL fan from then until the present day and knowing that their catalogue goes well beyond one "classic" song made tonight's show so much more exciting for me. More...

Chariots Of The Gods Posts Lyric Video

Melodic death metal group Chariots Of The Gods just unleashed a new lyric video for "Resurrection" in support of latest album "Ages Unsung," which was released this past September.

"Resurrection" is one of ten shredding tracks recorded at The Grid with legendary Montreal producer Chris Donaldson (Cryptopsy, The Agonist, Beyond Creation, Neuraxis). The album also features a special guest solo from The Agonist's Pascal Jobin on the song 'Into Oblivion."

The band comments on the "Resurrection" clip: "For the third lyric video, we thought 'Resurrection' could be a great addition to our series of singles. Rotting Christ And Inquisition Burn Down London

There have been a number of tours this year that have delighted fans of a specific sub-genre of metal in Europe. Destruction took to the road with fellow old school thrashers Flotsam and Jetsam, bringing with them younger fast bands, Enforcer and Nervosa, while we've also seen some dream pairings such as Exodus and Obituary on their "Battle of the bays" tour and the recently covered Amon Amarth and Testament trek. On this night however, it was the turn of devoted black metal fans to be treated when the "Bloodshed Rituals" tour rolled into London, featuring co-headlining slots from Inquisition and Rotting Christ.

Though unfortunately missing out on opening act, Schammasch due to conducting an interview with Rotting Christ frontman, Sakis Tolis, I was able to see the second band, Mystifier, a black metal group from Brazil who themselves are longtime veterans of the genre. Founded by the charismatic guitarist Beelzeebubth in 1989, the band have not released any new material in fifteen years but have clearly created a legacy for themselves given the reception they received when taking to the stage and those in the audience wearing their shirts. The trio put on a solid performance, no doubt winning over those in the crowd who were not familiar with them during a slot which clearly meant much to them. More...

Panic State Records Releasing Anti-Trump Shirts

It has begun - bands and labels are going to start being subversive again as the political right regains control. Panic State Records just issued this announcement about a new t-shirt design:

"In honor of the most vile and disgusting human being to ever be elected to the position of 'President,' we have decided to release a very special shirt in his honor. While the front may look comical, the back shows just what we are fighting for.

"We have decided to list the most urgent and volatile issues Trump and Pence pose a threat to and show that we stand with our brothers and sisters no matter how hard the fight will be. We will be selling these shirts for $10 each and donating 100% of the proceeds to the charities listed below to send a message that our fight has just begun.

"Let's make Washington, our elected officials and Courts see that we will not lie down and go quietly. We will be there every step of the way making sure they know who we are and what we fight for. Let's not move to another country - let's stay right here and fight side by side together for what we believe in and what we demand." More...

Weapon Of Anew Releases First Single

Weapons Of Anew, the dynamic new band featuring members of HavocHate and Spread Eagle, makes its debut to the metal world today with powerful single "Killshot" via OK!Good Records.

"As we started writing for this new band idea (with Chris Manfre and Stefan 'Reno' Cutrupi), I didn't want to write another HavocHate record," guitarist Freddy Ordine said. "Granted, I'm very proud of both those records, but I felt I had more to say and it didn't have to be all about heavy. It could have awesome melodies and groove and still smack you in the face, but in a different way. I had started listening to this melody I kept hearing in my head and wrote the remainder of the song."

Enter Spread Eagle vocalist Ray West. "The chorus wasn't written as you hear it now until Ray came in," Ordine said. "I heard Ray sing the verses in this sleek kind of modal way the first time we ever played together and - ZAP!!! - I was instantly connected! The chorus pretty much jumped out of my head and onto my fret board. I knew this is what my new band was supposed to sound like!"

Added Reno: "We had a fully working old version of the song with a completely different chorus and bridge section. Upon jamming it with Ray on our first couple of meetings, we ended up removing parts and re-writing entire sections of the song and changing parts to fit Ray's awesome vocal style. We were pretty set on the original version of the song until Ray came in and we moved things around...for the better I might add!" More...

Rhapsody Of Fire Announces New Vocalist

Italian fantasy metal pioneers Rhapsody of Fire announced that Teodasia vocalist Giacomo Voli will be the band's new voice, replacing Fabio Lione, who announced his departure back in late September.

The band commented: "We are extremely proud to announce that Giacomo Voli is the new singer of Rhapsody Of Fire. As you can imagine, we are very enthusiastic to have Giacomo in the band and we can promise you that, beside his beautiful voice, he has brought new energy that we are looking forward to unleashing. Stay tuned! More news and footage coming really soon!"

In a world exclusive interview with MetalUnderground.com back on October 10th, band founder Alex Staropoli spoke about the qualities he was seeking in a new vocalist: "There are three main aspects for both: personality, technique and emotion. We want someone with the right chemistry. We want to have a lot of fun playing, performing, recording and touring together. For instance, the new singer needs to have a solid vocal background, skillful and experienced, with a wide range and lots of power. It’s important that the singer can easily communicate with our audience on stage and convey a wide range of emotions through epic storytelling. Regarding the drummer, it’s of course less about storytelling emotion but more about the fun on tour and the energy on the stage in addition to a mind-blowing technique that fits our music."

The announcement came via a video clip with Voli introducing himself and a performance clip giving a taste of what he brings to the band. Check it out here:

Diabulus In Musica Presents "Invisible"

If unbridled passion for classical music meets raw modern metal, the result is most certainly going to be Diabulus In Musica. The Spanish band is the biggest symphonic metal act their homeland has to offer, and the fivepiece has been storming Europe since 2010 and the debut "Secrets"! Two years after "Argia," the fourth album "Dirge for the Archons" ('Archon' has been named as one of Atlantis' creators) travels with us to long lost worlds and thrills with the flair of the finest operas, rough growls, epic choirs, orchestral intermezzi and pure metal. The mystical cover artwork comes courtesy of Heilemania (Lindemann, Epica, Kamelot).

Today, the band teamed up with MetalUnderground.com for the premiere for the music video for the new song "Invisible." Check it out in the player below.

Sepultura Posts New Song Online

Brazilian metal legends Sepultura has posted a new song online entitled, "I Am The Enemy," which appears on their forthcoming new album, "Machine Messiah." You can check it on Spotify now by clicking here or listen in below.

Guitarist Andreas Kisser stated: "The song 'I Am The Enemy' was one of the last songs we worked on before going to Sweden to record the album, it's really simple and straight forward with a strong influence of the hardcore scene of the 90's.

"The lyrics talk about ourselves as human beings, with concepts and pre-concepts implanted in our heads through education, religion, the environment and all of our own experiences. We are the problem and the solution, do not blame anything or anyone else but yourself, you are your own enemy. Face yourself, rethink your life and then you'll have a chance to make a better world for yourself.

"We are playing the song live already and the reaction is being amazing, now you all have the chance to listen to the album version, play it loud!" More...

Rotting Christ Discusses Rituals, Europe And Sport

Formed in the Greek capital city of Athens in 1987, Rotting Christ remains one of Europe's longest running and most respected extreme metal bands. Emerging initially as a grindcore band, they soon became one of the first names in black metal, with their demos spreading across Europe and influencing the infamous Norwegian black metal scene as well as other groups on both sides of the continent. They have since gone on to release twelve studio albums and one EP, in addition to a live album and comprehensive DVD and are still one of the most unique sounding bands in extreme metal music.

At their recent show in London, I had the pleasure of sitting down with frontman and founder Sakis Tolis to discuss their latest album, "Rituals," as well as the legacy of the band, his side group Thou Art Lord, the current political and economic climate and our mutual love of association football. You can listen to the conversation below. More...
