Hank Shermann Comments on Denner/Shermann Debut

Glen Tipton and K.K. Downing, Jeff Hanneman and Kerry King, Adrian Smith and Dave Murray, Kirk Hammett and James Hetfield are all considered legendary twin-axe assassins. Michael Denner and Hank Shermann certainly deserve to be part of this conversation. The two are responsible for creating absolute magic on classic early Mercyful Fate records “Melissa” and “Don’t Break The Oath” (and Shermann on every MF recording).

From balls-to-the-wall heavy riffs like the devilishly delightful post chorus dirge on “Come To The Sabbath” or the infernal trot on “Black Funeral” to dark spiritual levitation of notes that lead into the black heart of “Desecration of Souls,” their guitar play is technical, memorable, melodic and chilling, often further enhancing King Diamond’s ghostly wails.

While Denner left Mercyful Fate in 1996, he appeared with the band in 2009, Shermann and Denner reunited in the early 2000s to form Force of Evil with other King Diamond/MF alumnus Bjarne Holm and Hal Patino. Now, nearly a decade after releasing the last Force of Evil album the duo is at it again, this time using their namesake. Mercyful Fate has largely been inactive for a decade and a half, so for many this newly assembled band provides a needed fix of Mercyful Fate. While there are certain differences between this group and MF, the two guitarists have a writing style that just can’t get away from Mercyful Fate comparisons. If you like the guitar play in Mercyful Fate, there is a good chance you’ll enjoy Denner/Shermann.

“Satan’s Tomb,” the debut EP from the dynamic duo was released by Metal Blade on October 2nd. Composer Hank Shermann spoke with Metalunderground.com about the making of said album, assembling the players, and of course what’s going on in the Mercyful Fate camp.

Serpents Lair Signs With Hellthrasher

Hellthrasher Productions posted this message online about inking a deal with Serpents Lair for an album release early next year:

"We are proud to announce our new signing and first release for 2016 - Serpents Lair's debut full-length 'Circumambulating the Stillborn.' Formed in Denmark, Serpents Lair is one of the most talented and devastating black metal acts to come out of Scandinavia in a good while, crafting a very distinctive brand of dissonant, kaleidoscopic black metal, both complex and abrasive in its execution.

"After 2014 demo MMXIV took the underground by storm last year, the band returns with a full-fledged offering, made up of seven tracks sharing the aesthetic of Deathspell Omega, Svartidaudi and Carpe Noctem, yet unique in their own way. To be released on CD in January 2016 via Hellthrasher Productions. Vinyl version will be available from Fallen Empire Records (USA) and Duplicate Records (NO)." More...

The Fifth Alliance Announces "Death Poems"

Following 2013 debut album "Unrevealed Secrets Of Ruin," Dutch five-piece The Fifth Alliance now returns with second album "Death Poems," due out October 31, 2015. Consouling Sounds Records comments:

"Powerful and dark, 'Death Poems' consists of four new tracks that masterfully blend gritty and harsh sludge with emotive, gloomy post-metal moments. With this record, The Fifth Alliance has taken a significant step forward and developed a more powerful and emotionally intense sound, especially in the vocal delivery of Silvia Berger.

"There is something deeply disturbing and touching about the singer's performance as if she is lamenting the loss of a loved one. If you are a fan of doomy, harsh and emotive post-metal, then 'Death Poems' is going to be one of your favourite releases of 2015." More...

Tales Of The Tomb Releasing Debut EP

Canadian death metal band Tales Of The Tomb will release debut EP "Volume One: Morpras" on November 27, 2015. Tales Of The Tomb is a three-headed vocal attack layered with grinding blast beats, injected with Cerberus-esque barks and finished with shrill and raspy vocals - a sound straight from hell. Drummer John Thomson comments:

"Out of the gates we have just under a year have played over a half dozen shows and recorded our debut 3-song EP entitled 'Morpras.' The name is old English for 'secret killing of a person, unlawful killing.' The EP is a compilation of serial killer themed music not celebrating but elaborating on the heinous crimes committed by infamous murderers. It is old school death metal with its blending of melody and groove, gives 'Morpras' its unique sound.

"The first track 'Snowtown' will ease you into this murderous journey with a heavy groove and plenty of vocals. 'Pig Farmer,' the 2nd song on the EP is as fast and brutal as the slaying of Robert Pickton; the song is also accompanied with our lyrical video which will be available on Youtube. 'Dr. Death' also makes an appearance as the final track, a chilling slower tempo song that depicts the heinous crimes of Harold Shipman."

This concept album about murder was recorded by Greg Wright at Hillbilly Wizard Sound Studio, and mixed/mastered by Euro-death metal master Dan Swano (ex-Bloodbath, Unisound) and is just the first of many more sonic crimes to come from Tales Of The Tomb. More...

Silent Line Posts Full New Album Online

Bonnyville, AB death-infused melodic metallers Silent Line are now streaming the entire "Shattered Shores" album online as it sees official release today. The band also comments:

"'Shattered Shores' is a concept album – our first attempt at one – that depicts a tortured island stuck in time being slowly worn away by an endless ocean. Themes of frost, snow, fire, night, and stars are used to illustrate feelings of hopelessness, fear, and loss.

"A single person is referred to throughout the album and everything is told from their point of view as they wander, stuck on the island unsure of how they got there, and unsure if they will ever leave. Lots of references to snow and frost are used as we live in Canada, and there is a lonely but beautiful character to the long winter we experience. Another recurring theme is the storm, which brings change and renewal; it is – for lack of a better term – the symbol of hope and of a brighter future.

"Overall, 'Shattered Shores' has a melancholic feel to it. It is definitely darker than our other albums, but we feel that it is much more mature and identifiable with an audience. It’s not meant to be depressing, but it deals with real issues and lots of the time those are not pretty. While it is a darker album, the message is not. Overcoming internal issues and feelings is the prime focus, and to describe how important that is, it is necessary to spend time describing the more pessimistic side of things and what makes it so crippling.

"The songs are more involving and deeper in meaning and structure than our last release, and we took a step back technically on purpose. Individually, the instruments are not as “crazy” as before, but we had a vision for the songs this time, we could see the end product and knew that to get there we didn’t have to play the most technically demanding things as fast as we could. The songs, while more simple, have far more feeling and emotion than before and we are very proud of what we have produced. We hope that everyone listening to the album can find something they enjoy, something they identify with, and something that makes them want to continue listening." More...

My Dying Bride Posts Behind The Scenes Video

My Dying Bride just posted a behind the scenes video from the shoot for "Feel the Misery," the title track off the group's latest album. Vocalist Aaron Stainthorpe commented:

"Shot in beautiful Pembrokeshire, off South Wales, 'Feel The Misery,' the video, was captured amidst crashing waves and total darkness by director James Sharrock and his crew of merry men and women.

"Influenced by the painting The Raft of the Medusa by Théodore Géricault, the video begins with the aftermath of a tragic loss of a vessel and the miserable survivors left clinging to a makeshift raft. Perishing one by one, the sole lass slips beneath the waves to a watery death, to be discovered later on the shore by a gnarly old sea dog scrounging for oddments. Distraught at his find, the man carries the maiden to his hovel (St. Govans Chapel) and lays her before the altar as is his pious want.

"Shot in this most beautiful part of the world through treacherous rocky conditions with an incoming tide and only a storm-lamp for lighting at 2am the feeling of the misery has indeed been captured perfectly."

If you missed it, the full music video for "Feel The Misery" can also be seen at this location. More...

Hegemon Streaming "Hatred From The Core"

Hegemon is premiering a new track taken from forthcoming album "The Hierarch," which has been scheduled for worldwide release on the 13th of November. The French black metal veterans are streaming their venomous song "Hatred From The Core: Tempus Incognito" below. Regarding the new track, the band comments:

"We have deliberately chosen 'Hatred From The Core: Tempus Incognito' as the opening track. The title says it all: humanity is full of hatred from its very beginning, in its cosmic roots, and since the inception of this universe. Violence is the essence of mankind as chaos has ruled ever since the primal spark set everything alight. We have been trying hard to establish order, but that has always only led to another pandemonium. We are morally and physically corrupted from inside as we fail to harness our seething nature. We are the sons of stars."

The album's track listing is as follows:

1. Hatred From The Core: Tempus Incognito
2. Interpreting Signs For War: Aruspicine (streaming here)
3. Elysean Expectations, Earthly Deceptions

Loudguns Posts New Single

The Finnish six guns are at it again, creating hits to rock the hell out of every 80's rocker out there: the new Loudguns single "Who Needs A Heaven" is a little taste of the new album "Revolution Days" set to be released in 2016.

This 3rd album from the band won't be featuring the voice of singer Lassi Vääränen anymore, as Loudguns enters the studio with a new singer in January. Sami Pilve comments:

"We're truly awesome friends with Lassi and forever will be, it's just that all the schedules became impossible to fit in, so it was Lassi's decision as a gentleman he is to leave the band for as he didn't want to be the one slowing things down. I really appreciate it and we wish Lassi the best of luck with everything! With this said 'Who Needs A Heaven' is the last song with Lassi on vocals and it won't be featured on the 3rd album, so it's a super special release." More...

Stielas Storhett Signs With Wormholedeath

Russian one man post black metal act Stielas Storhett signed on with Wormholedeath Records. The third full length release "Drownwards" is expected on December 1st.

The brainchild of Damien T.G (The Unhallowed), Stielas Storhett was formed in 2005 and spewed forth such critically acclaimed albums as "Vandrer.." (2006) and "Expulsè" (2011).

Damien commented: "2009... the birth, 2013... the recording, 2015... the release of the new album of Stielas Storhett - 'Drownwards.' As a rule it takes from few months to years 'till the recordings turn out to be a release. That’s why right after every album’s release I have dramatically new stuff to record. Who needs alike albums? I do not. I did my best and I tried hard to make 'Drownwards' more rough and bellicose compared to my previous works. During the recordings I was feeling exactly the same and tried to spread all that energy and emotions which break out of my chest with my music. I’m sharing it with you! I appreciate my friends’ participation, they, vocalists from different bands, have left some parts of their souls in a few tracks of 'Drownwards.' Lovely tragic vocal tunes have added obscurant atmosphere to the songs. I vouch that the nowadays form would not hide the familiar subject-matter of the new Opus. Ab ovo usque ad mala STIELAS STORHETT IS DAMIEN T.G., DAMIEN T.G.IS STIELAS STORHETT.” More...
