Ysgaroth Releases New Single

With their debut album "Storm Over a Black Sea" coming up soon, Vancouver extreme metal band Ysgaroth allure metal fans around the world with a new single, "Forward Unto Death."

One of the shorter songs on the album, it was the last song written, and it is Ysgaroth stripped down to its core elements: harmonies, black metal atmosphere, and at least one riff born of caveman brutality. Lyrically this song is about everything mankind is doing to the Earth, and the true cost of climate change: everything. We’re not just destroying the Earth in some abstract sense, we’re slowly killing ourselves, and very quickly driving every animal we can extinct.

Probably the most stylistically varied song on the album, the verses evoke 90’s black metal, with the pre-chorus drawing influence from power metal and the chorus being pure 2000’s melodeath. The outro channels the muscular death metal of Deicide and Cannibal Corpse, and the solo is Steigler’s best Trey Azagthoth impression. The band comments about the guests on the song:

"We had already reached out to our friends Jessie Grace and Erik Leonhard of KOSM about having them on the album, and we wanted to do something a little bit different with 'Forward Unto Death' by having Jessie sing the chorus. The lyrics on this one are about as straightforward as we can get: we’re killing the Earth more every second of every day, and we only ourselves to blame for the extinction of thousands of species, the absolute shattering of the world, but at least the stock market went up."

Influences ranging from old school death metal, progressive metal, black metal, and sludge are evident and fans of Enslaved, Wolves in the Throne Room, and Death will be particularly interested.

The single "Forward Unto Death" is available via its premiere on Metal-Rules and can also be heard below.

"Storm Over a Black Sea" will be available on November 13, 2020. More...

Lyonen Posts New Music Video Online

Lyonen, the solo project from Venezuela's Luis Rivas, released a debut album “This Is Lyonen” during August of this year. It is a solid eleven-track effort packed with flouring power metal vocals, sweeping solos, and of course, a layer of thundering drums.

Rivas is a talented musician who seeks to push the envelope with his sound and bridge various elements from different genres to make a well-rounded, dynamic style. His music always contains a positive message, and the classic heavy metal track "Lyonen" is no exception. The song recalls a mix of Rivas’ teenage days in the ’80-’90s. It is an anthem for the band’s followers and encourages listeners to be free, do the right things, and stand for truth.

Rivas explains further:

"I want to motivate the listeners through the lyrics while giving them a shot of classic heavy metal with melodic guitar lines and heavy vocals. Lyonen is important to me because this is the first time I can put what I am thinking into a song and I definitely want to do more." More...

Varg Drummer Discusses New Album "Zeichen"

It's a funny contradiction that in the modern world, one of the most popular sub-genres of metal is one which focuses on the past, particularly the pre-Christian ways of Europe. Pagan metal, as it is often dubbed, blends metal music with melodies, themes and at times intruments to remind the world of where it came from and the fill in the missing parts of the soul.

One of pagan metal's most endearing bands of the last fifteen years hails from the Bavarian town of Coburg and despite the confusion and misguided connotations regarding their moniker, take their name from the Scandinavian word for "wolf." The band of course is Varg and this year, the band released what could well be their strongest album, "Zeichen," which saw not only a return to their pagan metal roots, but the introduction of new vocalist Fylgja. To find out more about the album, as well as the past and future plans for the band, I caught up with founding member and drummer Silvester "Fenrier" Grundmann. You can watch the interview in full below. More...

Septicflesh Records Children's Choir For New Album

Fantastic news from Greek's most promising symphonic death metal export: Septicflesh took another huge step in completing the recordings of their upcoming studio album. The children choir recordings for the new record are done - adding an unique vibe to the album as the band states:

"The children choir recordings for the new Septicflesh album have been completed with the very good collaboration of the Libro Coro. So you can expect some realy emotional parts on the songs, that thrive on the contrast of the angelic voices with the musical pandemonium surrounding them."

The as yet untitled new album has been in progress since August of this year and is set to be the band's first album in four years, marking the longest gap in between albums since reforming, as well as the band's first album since signing with Nuclear Blast.

The album is an incendiary compilation of songs that everyone in the band, both current and previous members, had some input choosing, and it shows true honesty in the recordings, making it a fresh take on some very listenable rock jams.

Kory Clarke: "We wanted to make a record that was not about all the crap we are all living in, as it seems like a well worn path for . So, I had to think out of the box."
