Solstafir Transports Bristol To The North

The incredible thing about metal music is how far it reaches. The equally incredible thing about metal musicians is just what they can do with it. In today's case, we're looking at the talent of Solstafir, a quartet from the far northern country of Iceland, whose passion filled, progressive take on metal music has garnered them a strong reputation over the years. At the end of last year, the four Nordic musicians came over to the United Kingdom and Ireland for a string of shows (surprisingly omitting London) and I popped along to the show in Bristol to experience the group for myself.

Quite honestly, I don't like giving bad reviews, since art is subjective and what doesn't work for me may be a revelation to someone else. I will say that the support from Talons and Telepathy did absolutely nothing for me. One instrumental act is an interesting addition to the lineup but two is frankly a bit much, especially when the headlining band does have a vocalist. If you're a skilled musician, you might enjoy taking in the music and seeing what these bands can do, but otherwise, it's like being a punk fan at a jazz concert; mind numbingly bored and agitated by the unfamiliar sound. Devin Townsend Announces European Tour Dates

Canadian heavy music artist, Devin Townsend, recently announced the release of his forthcoming new album, Empath, for March 29th, and today he reveals the dates for the Empath Europe - Volume 1 tour, starting in November.

Devin comments: "After a year of intensive recording, mixing, and reflection, I have decided where I want to take the next level of my career as a live performer. I have had success and great memories from both the Devin Townsend Project as well as Strapping Young Lad, but now I am fortunate enough to be able to follow the muse where it currently leads. I am proud to announce that for the first 'band' tour of the Empath cycle, I am going to stretch my wings in ways I have not had the opportunity to do before and tour with a 'backing band' that can shift and morph as the music dictates instead of adhering to a click track. 'Empath Europe Volume 1' will be the first example of this, and the first tour will be in Europe (other territories to follow). More...

The Band talk about the making of the song and video:
Sean. "We knew right when Casey Trask first wrote the main riff this was going to be one of those fist in the air, head banging songs that we absolutely needed to have on the album. It really makes the journey of this album for the listener complete as it covers all the bases and beyond!"

Tim. "This song has really become a fan favorite. From our live shows and the early reaction to the album from the fans, a lot of people talk about this one which is great."

Harry "We put together a video for this one from some fan footage and video we took ourselves on our first European tour. It shows how much fun the whole thing was. Even though no one had ever heard this song before, the fists in the air were there right when the song started every night!" More...

Polar states: "Midnight is a song about coming of age and sexual awakening. It is written about a personal experience I had at 15 which forced me to understand sex mentally and physically in a unnatural way. This song has been therapeutic to me and I hope it allows people who hear it to be honest with themselves and deal with their inner demons. Our new album 'Nova' musically and lyrically has been therapeutic for all us, we came to point where we all needed a release and this is the product of that. We hope listeners can relate to this record and make steps to finding inner peace as much as us." More...
