I should start by saying that I went to this showcase with high expectations; I liked their debut album (although I do not think it’s a master piece it is still a good debut album), and above all I love their attitude, their strength.

And so with this in mind I dragged my tired body (I had awakened at 5 a.m. to go to work and I was feeling like sh#t) to Lisbon’s Fnac mega store at Colombo shopping mall at around 8 p.m.

With time to spare I got me a nice fresh beer talked with a friend of mine and observed the usual crowd that follow this kind of band, the so called gothic fans!!!

On a side note I must admit I REALLY LOVE GOTH CHICS!!!!

With that out of my chest on to what really matters, the showcase.

At 9:25 p.m. Johnny Icon and his band mates entered the (very) small stage and without even addressing the crowd they immediately started to play opening the show with the song “The Sweetest Emptiness Of Love”… and my heart sunk to the ground, Johnny’s voice was almost drowned by the rest of the band.

It was not like the sound was terrible or anything, the problem was Johnny was really intimidated by the ambience of the all thing.

Sure I understand that it was not a real concert it was a showcase in a very small place where you stand only inches from the fans, but still…

And so I waited for the next song to see what would happen.

When the first cords of “Black Rose” sounded something in Johnny’s attitude changed, he let himself go and then I understood that only now the real show started.

By the time they started “Angel”, the first single taken form their self titled debut album, Johnny was totally at home and the songs were being delivered with great professionalism by all the guys.

Next came “Crucify You Love”, another very strong song with great lyrics and a possible single and finally the most powerful song on the album “Set Me On Fire” and this one brought the house down.

In conclusion The Black Roses are a great musicians but Icon needs to get more confident, more secure, more loose on stage and it wouldn’t kill him if he tried to get a more close relation with his fans.
