Is Metal Dangerous?

Photo of Cradle Of Filth

Band Photo: Cradle Of Filth (?)

In an article on Valley Advocate, writer Katie Vrabel asks whether or not metal is dangerous. Did the murdering of Dimebag Darrell blacken the music industry? Several excerpts from the article:

Overall, the media treatment was respectful, but it also soon became clear that metal remains a black sheep. And maybe we like it that way, but sometimes the insults go too far. I'm a metalhead, so I take it personally. But in light of recent events (Abbott murdered; Satyricon's touring guitarists accused of rape; two stabbed at a Cradle of Filth concert) I've had to ask: Is metal really dangerous?

The science is on our side when it comes to the effects of "violent" music on daily life as well. Douglas Gentile, in his 2003 book, Media Violence and Children, concludes that listening to music has less of an effect on aggression than watching television and playing video games. He points out what should be obvious: that in cases where a metalhead commits an act of violence or suicide, real factors (depression, substance abuse, etc.), rather than musical taste, are to "blame." He notes that the majority of fans are not troublesome or troubled.

Today's metal is still dark, but is getting more sensitive, political, literary, mythology-inspired and nerdy all the time. Interest in Satan has waned. Bands that are basically white guys singing about graphic violence and violent sexuality exist, but are hardly a blip on the radar relative to what is popular and commercially viable.

As to the stereotypical portrayal of metal as the mouthpiece for the young, angry white male, critics should do themselves a favor and catch up with a genre that's moved beyond that.

Finally, a well-written article taking on the stereotypes and misinformation about metal and metalheads and violence!

On the topic of violence, I was talking with a coworker about concert/venue security shortly after Dimebag's murder and he was amazed that I described the security upon entry as lax or nonexistent at many metal shows, as opposed to the tight security and major frisking he gets going to rap or Hip-hop shows.

People always want to talk about cause and effect of certain things like music and movies and most people dismiss catharsis as an unproven theory, but I can tell you that if I didn't have metal music to vent my anger or frustrations, I'd have died from stress and/or shot a few people by now! Some people use hobbies as an outlet, some use them as an obsession, regardless of what kind it may be.

This lady has written a pretty decent article. It's a welcome sight after all the stupid sh** and other accusations being thrown at metal. And why isn't rap ragged on more than metal? There's a lot more violence. Just look at how many rappers have been killed or shot by those other gangstas and thugs.I really have no idea how anyone could overlook the violence and death in rap and jump straight to metal. I won't blame any particular form of music for the world's problems. But those people doing the criticizing need to look at all kinds of music, not just metal. But those critics will probably never understand, like deathbringer said, that music is just a hobby or a catharsis.

For some people, music isn't simply just a hobby. It's therapy. I've heard many people tell me how bands have helped them get through tough and painful moments of their lives. And it really bugs me whenever someone tries to somehow link metal and violence together, mainly because the idiots who do so don't even know what they're talking about. Sure, some metal fans may be violent, but so are fans of other music genres. And even if (and that's a big IF) metal fans and violence were more related than all other types of music, you still can't infer causality from correlation. I mean, maybe metal doesn't cause someone to be more aggressive, but perhaps people who are predisposed to violence tend to listen to this type of music.

Throughout the entire course of history, art has been a reflection of society and the world around us.
You can tell alot about where a culture was by looking at there paintings, music and literature.
That won't change. Hundreds of years from now when people look back at this point in history,
they probably won't see it as violent type of music, but a reflection of the world we have to deal with
every day. Music doesn't cause violence, but it can reflect the anger people feel about
life and manifest itself through violence. I love metal because it is the only music that
captures my frustrations about how much this world can suck!
Thing is, I listen to it so I won't go crazy.

21. Forrest Gabitsch writes:

Metal isn't dangerous. Carrying firearms or knives into a club is dangerous. And expecting American life to become safe and secure, with this retarded war going on, is both dangerous and stupid.

I wouldn't say rap is dangerous, either, although mainstream rap is one of the most hideous examples of wealth-worship in this country. Gone are Public Enemy, Ice-T, and others who actually had something interesting to say. In their place: a Xerox machine spitting out clone after clone, each one wearing the latest trendy fashions, sporting jewelry and cars that no one else can afford. Rap used to be total street music, ignored by the mainstream until it eventually became the most popular music in the country. So, the record companies now use rap to promote a status symbol lifestyle. If you have the hundred-dollar Nikes, it doesn't matter that you can't afford socks. If you have the spinning rims, it doesn't matter that your car's a white, 1995 Geo.

There's nothing dangerous about this. In fact, it keeps poor people from asking too many questions. That's why it's geared towards poor people. (Wal-Mart operates in much the same way. They open stores in as many poor areas as they can, then give sh**loads of money to the Republican party.)

People are too easily influenced. If it's on tv, it must be true. If this celebrity wears their

we should buy it. If Rush Limbaugh or whoever says metal is dangerous, then it must be
dangerous. Why do people want to destroy what they don't understand? Why are people so
threatened by anything different? When did so many people stop thinking independently?
CAN'T WE ALL JUST GET ALONG?

Man, I need a f***ing drink!

Metal is only dangerous to people that don't understand it.
Metalheads are people who generally don't conform, and think more independently.
Maybe it's the attitude that's threatening, or maybe it's that we don't waste all of our
money on Brittney Spears albums and Guess jeans.

Is metal dangerous?

So i was listening to deicide, slayer, dillinger escape plan, opeth and strapping young lad for what probably amounts to 51 hours non stop. I wasnt eating at all and i was drinking heavily.

i removed the faucet and handles (made entirely of really old iron) from my bathroom sink, snorted some pcp and leapt through my closed front window to seize the day. sink faucte in tow.

I ran into (literally) one of the guys in my apt complex..he asks "whats the hurry?"

fat bastard didnt mind his busisness, i beat him there and then with the faucet

that faucet combined with skull and facial bones probably made the best sound i have heard EVER!

I ran to the park to go catch some ducks in the creek

ducks are so trusting too..

for some odd reason they didnt even fly away...you see, people feed these ducks daily so it stands to reason that i was going to feed them not destroy them...that was dumb

whats even more incredible is that they kept swimming while dismembered the first duck, it's like they didnt care or thought i would stop at just one duck

THE FOOLS!

The creek ran red within an hour of my arrival, but i had attracted a crowd of onloookers,

they wouldnt come close...they knew better...but they were WATCHING!

and this was a very private affair........between me and the ducks...

sirens...dammit, they come

the wearers of blue and the men in white...again..they are faster today..

running, running so that everything blurs and sounds plods at slow motion

my feet ARE humming birds and the sirens grow distant

metal is harmless

I am not

Why does the paper and media have large articles with worrying concern over college boys listening to metal and potentialy killing someone, when they could be showing concern over 50 cent rapping about a girl sucking his c*ck and making a near dirty musi c video around it and the kids listening to it and have their minds corrupted with sex and drug thoughts. I rather promote violence than sex and drugs cuz 9 out of 10 no 1 follows violent lyrics. Rap has a more negative impact on soceity then metal so all you media-whores shut the f*ck up!

i still think you're confusing pop and other forms of music with metal, dude. if metal is producing music more targeted for the demagrphics you are claiming, then why are all the older metal groups reforming and touring? it's not the younger fans who are creating a demand for thier music, it's the older metalheads. metal bands are quite aware that they are probably the most diversley listened music gender of them all, and they are'nt gonna alienate anybody by trying to target one particular group of individuals, unlike rap or hip hop or top forty type musicians who know their only bread and butter comes from the 14-24 age group. as i said dude, catch up on your facts. I dont think that metal is dangerous. I think that ppl say that it is to blame it on something else rather than themsleves.
