The first date for the Pain of Salvation/Vangough North American tour (sponsored by MetalUnderground.com) doubled as ProgPower USA’s unofficial “Midweek Mayhem” show on September 10th in Atlanta, Georgia at The Loft music venue. Power metal band Theocracy joined for a set in-between the two bands to balance out the power- and progressive-metal for the evening with a powerful galloping energy. In the style of the three bands combined, here is a lyrical retelling of the experience of that show by writer Frank Serafine.

----------------
Help me now, it’s not quite Friday yet
I need something to get me through
Something full of rage and pain,
SOME! GOOD! SET!
Some good set that’s tried and true
...And also something new

VANGOUGH! This one’s full of anger!
THEOCRACY! Righteousness for all!
PAIN OF SALVATION - A PROGGY FREE-FOR-ALL!
Let the metal flow, emotion riding high
For the midweek metal mayhem ride!

Vangough brought the spite and grit
“Choke Faint Drown” is some heavy shit
Filmed for a live CD free of “Corporatocracy”
“Madness In Atlanta” is the title
“Mannikin Parade” was truly vital
This place is getting packed beyond belief
It’s like an “Infestation”!!!

This first set is just truly great, but lacking in falsetto
I need some songs with gallop to ‘em, from power metal fellows

Theocracy aimed for the bleachers and hit it to the sky
Through the air and to the heavenly domain on high
“Laying the Demon To Rest”, they really “Nailed” “The Gift of Music”
It was my “Absolution Day”, but “I Am” also wanting some acoustic

VANGOUGH! This one’s full of anger!
THEOCRACY! Righteousness for all!
PAIN OF SALVATION - A PROGGY FREE-FOR-ALL!
Let the metal flow, emotion riding high
For the midweek metal mayhem ride!

After all the galloping drums and the sing-alongs, it’s time
For the intimate and subtext-ridden Gildenlow-penned rhyme

(In 7 / 8 time signature)
PAIN! OF! SAL-VA-TION!
How was I to know the Perfect Element Part I was to be done
In part and oh-so-sweetly sung,
With all the “People Passing By” “In The Flesh”
“! (Foreword)” took me by surprise and FELT SOOOO FRESH
[high vocal “ahhh, ah ahhh” here]
“Ashes” and “Morning On Earth” made me die
“Love Gun” and the “Nightmist” got me high
Seeing Daniel and crew play as if they could go all night
Reassured me that the choice I made to attend was right

The Loft may be small, but my metal family’s here
Did we sell out the place? I think we got pretty near
Damn, this venue’s hot, but if that’s what it takes
I’d do it again in a heartbeat, I need it to be NEXT! YEAR!
Now…….

VANGOUGH! This one’s full of anger!
THEOCRACY! Righteousness for all!
PAIN OF SALVATION - A PROGGY FREE-FOR-ALL!
Letting metal flow, emotion riding high
For the midweek metal mayhem ride!

VANGOUGH! What a surprise!
THEOCRACY! Calling us to rise!
PAIN OF SALVATION - Self-discovery and highs!
Metalheads coming from far and wide
For the midweek metal mayhem ride!
--------------------------(end)

Thursday's show, booked by Swordlord Productions, was headlined by the Norwegians of Pagan's Mind and recorded for their crowd-funded live DVD "Full Circle", as well as backed by Italy's DGM and the USA's own Draekon.
