"some music was meant to stay underground..."

70000 Tons of Metal - The World's Biggest Heavy Metal Cruise

Interview With Aborted Guitarist Tace

Monday, November 7th, I had the opportunity to interview Aborted guitarist, Tace. He was very nice friendly to me. The interview was done at BB Kings in New York CIty. Here's how it went down:

Savagebutcher: What were your expectations from this tour?

Tace: I had high expectations because Suffocation is a classic death metal band. They were better than I expected and we were all thrilled to be on this tour.

Savagebutcher: What's your favorite place to tour in America?

Tace: It's hard to pick one because we've had good shows all over the country. I like to play everywhere. The tour was one big highlight.

Savagebutcher: What's the Belgian metal scene like?

Tace: It's a small country and there's not much going on. I think we're one of the first Belgian bands to tour the States.

Savagebutcher: How's the metal scene from when you were growing up?

Tace: Not that much because the band's I grew up with, such as Iron Maiden is still very popular. People are also getting more open minded. I like because the more narrow minded people are changing.

Savagebutcher: How did you get into metal?

Tace: Good question! Guns and Roses, Iron Maiden, and Metallica. Stuff from around 15-20 years ago.

Savagebutcher: Aborted released their album, “The Archaic Arbitrator”, through your new label Century Media, how do you feel about the change from Listenable records?

Tace: We're actually signed a worldwide deal with Century Media. Listenable is a cool label, but its more underground. Century Media is better with promotional material.

Savagebutcher: This being your second release, how did the recording recording process go and what were some difficulties?

Tace: There really weren't any difficulties. The last album we made in about 2 ½ - 3 months and it was very intense which I like. Whereas working for 3 year working 1 day a week is something I don't like doing. I'm more into it when there's a rush. I'm happy about the new release and have no complaints.

Savagebutcher: How do you feel the band has evolved musically and personally?

Tace: Musically, we've become more mature and found our own way of putting our influences in our music. Personally, you grow as a band and play better and better through the years.

Savagebutcher: Your website's biography has you labeled has death metal, but Century Media's biography has you labeled as gore-grind, which do you feel fits the band?

Tace: I don't like labels in the first place, but I think death metal suits the band. We don't make gore-grind music, though we do have a gore image. I do enjoy gore-grind music though!

Savagebutcher: Century Media calls Aborted as “one of the most influential bands”, what are your thoughts on this?

Tace: I think that's cool! It's nice to hear because we don't want to make cliché death metal. I think there are so many bands that's because you have so many guys that only listen to death metal. Whereas we listen to many different kinds of music and are influenced by different music.

Savagebutcher: Your website and music seems very grotesque, why is this?

Tace: It's an image our singer has come up with. Like Cradle of Filth has their gothic look. It fits the music, if it was butterflies and rainbows I don't think it would work.

Savagebutcher: Why do you think people are into your kind of music?

Tace: Not calling ourselves an original band, I think a lot of people are fed up with common death metal. I think we appeal to other people because of our influences.

Savagebutcher: What are some personal music favorites?

Tace: That's a tough question, I like so many different kinds of music. I like Asesino, Deftones, and Cannibal Corpse, Nevermore, Arch Enemy. I like a ton of bands!

Savagebutcher: What are the plans for the future?

Tace: We have a European tour in February with Cryptopsy and Grave. Then we start on the new album.

Savagebutcher: Any advice for aspiring musicians and people trying to get into the business?

Tace: Listen to a lot of bands and don't keep yourself limited to one genre.
