Hammers of Misfortune return again with its latest performance piece, Fields / Church of Broken Glass. Master auteur John Cobbett (also of the blackened Ludicra) delivers a work specifically written for the double-vinyl format. Two distinct and separate albums, each with its own theme and aesthetic, joined at the spine. And with the its progressive and overtly ’70s sound, it recalls a time when the double-vinyl format meant a unique dual thematic experience rather than a single album that was simply too long for two sides. On Fields / Church of Broken Glass, Hammers of Misfortune continue with the political allegories and metaphors that were featured prominently on their previous LP, The Locust Years. As with all aspects of the band, a great deal of care was taken with the lyrical presentation of the album, avoiding the usual progressive and metal cliches. The sound goes further into the vintage sound of 1970s space travelers like Hawkwind, and the organ/keyboard/piano elements and female vocals feature more prominently then ever. Additionally, new singer Patrick Goodwin ably fills previous lead vocalist Mike Scalzi’s large shoes with a voice perfectly suited to the warmer, analog vibe of the newer songs. A new Hammers of Misfortune record is always an event for the band’s vast worldwide following. Nadja / Black Boned Angel - Split CD The two 20+ minutes tracks contained on this self-titled collaboration have a less accessible vibe then the Jesu-like track on last year’s “Christ Send Light” EP. There are no vocals to be heard. They are comprised in equal parts of Nadja’s fuzzed-out, lurching and hazy dream-doom, and BBA’s razor-sharp metallic riff-shards. Extended passages of riff-static noise bleeds one track into the next while deep space eerieness looms ever present in the shadows. Finally the whole thing collapses under the weight of its own self-created black hole. This is the end.

Stormcrow / Laudanum - Sacred Death mini LP
Stormcrow and Laudanum, two bands from Oakland, California (the same city that birthed Neurosis and has been home to Dystopia, Brainoil and Asunder) that approach heavy music from different angles with equally devastating results. Laudanum has previously released their largely overlooked debut “The Apotheker” back in 2004 and a 7 inch in 2007. Their sound comes from a much more doomed spectrum, as though the Melvins and Swans had been left to rot in some dank Oakland industrial zone. Indeed a large part of Laudanum’s sound is outright industrial influenced noise interspersed with their gristled doom riffage. Includes a coupon for a free MP3 download of the album!
After condemning the Earth with 5 albums and a deluge of other releases on labels like Load Records and Blossoming Noise, WHITE MICE are now set to defile the world once more! Stormcrow / Coffins - Split Vinyl mLP Stormcrow's side of the split is a monolithic combination of heavy crust, classic death metal and a creeping, omnipresent doom vibe, "Path to Defeat" is a song the band was playing in a less developed form on last year's tour. It was recorded at Earhammer Studio by Greg Wilkinson of Laudanum / Brainoil and Salvador Raya of Asunder. The Coffins side starts with the new track "The Black Fog of Burning Flesh," a song that would fit perfectly with the abominations on their 2008 LP Buried Death. In customary Coffins fashion, it's a no-frills, crawling, drenched-in-the-mire death metal deconstruction. "Black Fog" is followed by a re-recording of "Slaughter of Gods" from their 2005 debut LP Mortuary in Darkness, a live staple that will make any primitive death metal fan lament the evolutionary tendencies of Celtic Frost.
Graves At Sea / Asunder - Split Vinyl LP Graves at Sea’s side features the two strongest and well produced tunes they unleashed in their short lifespan. “Pariah” is one of the best, heaviest doom tracks ever recorded, with its warm wall of down-tuned Orange amplification, lumbering pace, and black-bile vokillz; “Reclamation” is another ten-minute marathon of treacherous, monolithic riffs and banshee screams. Asunder’s track, “Whited Sepulcher,” came as the immediate follow-up to their stunning, landmark A Clarion Call album, widely recognized as their most essential work. This track follows on that album’s monumentally heavy, but always structured and memorable approach. Highlighting influences like early Peaceville Records doom and covering it in the filth that only Oakland can harness, “Whited Sepulcher” is approximately 20 minutes of funereal doom that churns the bowls and empties the tear ducts all at once. DOOOOMED.com Finally available...
Crushing Doom split from Massachusetts' Black Pyramid and Kentucky's Old One Limited edition splatter vinyl! A review... Finally after what seemed like a endless delay comes the much awaited 12" split album from Black Pyramid and Old One. Both these bands should need no introduction but if have been living under a rock the last year or two, here is a brief intro anyway. Black Pyramid from Massachusetts firmly placed themselves on top on the Stoner/Doom mountain of bands with their self-titled album, released last year. One of the albums of the year and one of the strongest debut releases of the last 10 years. The album is a monumental instant classic album packed to the rim with killer riff after killer riff, as one reviewer said, "nothing but an unsurpassed pleasure". Old One from Kentucky also released a classic debut album but didn't get the support it deserved, that will remain a mystery as to why it happened that way. This drum/bass combo packs more of a sonic punch that most full bands do. They are also rich in the riffing department, not to mention the churning, psychedelic edge they have embedded in their horror-filled, bombastic sound that is similar to run over by a bulldozer. So the scene is set, two monster bands on the same album, how can you go wrong ? The two Black Pyramid tracks go way beyond any expectations, its as if the band have even more fire in the cannon than ever before, they sound heavier, more precise like they have taken their strongest elements and amplified them by 100. The first track "Illumination" kills everything in its path, the first half of this epic tune is based around a pure classic riff. Riffs like these don't come along too often, heavy, repetitive but oozing with class. Andy's great vocal perfection's are in full flight throughout the track but its the steady, monumental riffing that makes "Illumination" such a killer piece. While the first of the track is mammoth in Stoner/Doom riffarama, the second half heads off into a more Psychedelic Rock sound while maintaining every ounce of heaviness along the way. The psych guitar influences are there along with the trippy, spacey organ sound that seems to float above everything else. Black Pyramid have really broaden their sound with this track without losing none of their doomy goodness. The second installment from Black Pyramid comes in the form of "Warswine", a lot more basic and typical of Black Pyramid's original style but no less classic. Beginning with a riff that can only be described as threatening, it soon turns into a extreme assault of bombarding, headbanging intensity. A old-school type of galloping beat and rhythms propels the band into over-driven, furious metal, like Sabbath on speed complete with ripping guitar solos. Old One's first track is "Over the Hill" which gets on its merry way with droning organ sounds that are positivly vintage before they unleash what they are so good at, a Electric Wizard styled pulverizing grooving riff. The overall sound sounds a little cleaner than what is on their CD but its just as heavy, their debut album was so heavy, you wouldn't want to repeat it unless you want to be sued for destroying speaker-systems worldwide, i mean the sound on that album is sick! The groove, Old One set up on "Over The Hill" is a bit more mid-tempo than what you might be used to but its a mid-paced doom burner that slices and crushes. Old One slows things down towards the end of the track for a total doomed-out finale but for the most part this one grooving, twisted track. The most interesting of the two installments from Old One is the second cut called "Hexed". The story goes the song dates back to when the guys were only 16 years old. If this is true, they already had their Doom grooves down and perfected, at least in terms of songwriting. "Hexed" has all the classic Old One trademarks, the creepy old horror-movie organ sound and the thicker than quicksand groove. The end result is one that will please all old-school doomers, especially the ones that grew up on Electric Wizard's Dopethrone album. This is a dirge that is for those people that called EW's Witchcult Today album commercial, those type of Doom freaks will play this till the needle melts on their turntables. Must also mention Mike Cooper's vocal lines which are pure unadulterated brilliance, he has a vocal sound that is not only only distinctive but automatically timeless in its delivery. OK, i admit this has been a really long review just for 4 songs but its simply too good to sum up in a few words. Not sure on the official release date of this but i know its real soon and with the tracks already floating around the internet, it shows these 4 songs have already created a lot of interest. Do whatever it takes to get this 12". It kills! 10/10 ---Doom Metal Alliance |

Ever since their inception in 1994 Evoken's (U.S.) genre defining Death/Doom has stood unmatched in terms of density, darkness, dolefulness. Their fifth full length 2007's album "A Caress of The Void" sent reviewers all over the world into fits of abysmal lethargy, something that is bound to be repeated with the four new doors to the void presented on this split CD. Bow to the masters of Doom Death! Sweden's Beneath The Frozen Soil started in 2004 inspired by the likes of Candlemass, Paramaecium, My Dying Bride, Khanate and Evoken. Not the ones to wear their influences on their respective sleeves though, they have instilled their Doom Death with a cinematic, chilling and clearly northern/Nordic vibe. Hate and frustration leading to release and cleansing - the paradoxically thawing wave of emotion encapsulated in the three cold BTFS tracks seeks to drown the listener in icy pool's of paralyzing regret...
Back in the mid/late 1980s Germany was considered world leaders in the field of raw Thrash metal. Tons of artist today considered as legends or "cult" sprung onto the scene. Among the more violent acts there was MINOTAUR! MINOTAUR formed in 1983 and managed to record 3 demo's before their debut album "Power of Darkness" finally arrived in 1988. "Power of Darkness" was/is an album to be worshiped by everyone into extreme 80s German Thrash metal; crushing riffs, total devotion and the ability to write both raw and catchy material - something seldom found in metal of today! Originally released on the now defunct "Crazy Records" and impossible to find this re-issue features a couple of brand new bonus tracks "Power of Darkness" is an important piece of German history that should be included in all serious Thrash collections!
Almost 3 years after the squadron first release on, "Thundering Evil", Morbid Insulter return for another desecration of the holy hypocrites! "Born Again is a female-fronted Heavy Metal band led by none other than Crystal Viper's Leather Wych herself, Marta Gabriel. Anyone who has heard Crystal Viper knows she's one of the most powerful singers, male or female, in metal today and she is in fine form on Neverending Fire. In fact, it is worth it just for her gritty bellowing. Fortunately the lyrics seem to be focused on social and personal topics so we aren't dealing with the second coming of Stryper. The first track, "Neverending Fire," is a mid-paced rocker very much in the Doro mold. Big guitars, big vocals and an almost epic, if more rock, chorus. "One Question", my favorite of the two songs, picks up the pace and heaviness significantly. It blasts out of the speakers and Marta screams her lungs out. This one is more in line with what we've heard from Crystal Viper. The rest of the band, bassist Martin Albrecht, formerly of Mystic Prophecy, Majesty guitarist Bjorn Daigger, and Crystal Viper drummer Tom "Golem" Danczak, have the musical chops to keep pace with Gabriel's vocals.

Trouble's recording history in the '90's began with two albums for Def Jam, namely "Trouble" followed by "Manic Frustration". After that, Rick Rubin, Def Jam's owner, got into some serious financial trouble. And Trouble found themselves with no deal. This was the time, 1994, when the legendary "One for the Road" demo was published. Guitarist Rick Wartell tries to reconstruct the whole story: "When we recorded 'One for the Road' in 1994, the deal for the 'Plastic green Head' album was already in place. So why did we record that? Pre-production?" His colleague Bruce Franklin knows better: "Yeah, I think we were just seeing what we had. Every tour we do, we see all these people with different kinds of bootlegs. We thought, what the hell, man, all these people are making money off us. We were not making money, so we decided to bootleg ourselves. We recorded a demo, printed 1,500 copies, sold it for cash right there on the road, and for once we made money ourselves. The record company did not make money, the bootleggers did not make money, we did." Was it all "Plastic green Head" material on "One for the Road"? Bruce: "Two songs ended up on 'Plastic green Head', I think. 'Requiem' and 'Going home'. No, 'Going home' was on 'Simple Mind Condition'. 'Another Day' was the other one." "The rest would be exclusive then", adds Rick. "The songs were recorded in a studio, it wasn't a great studio, so it wasn't album quality, but still good. A good demo - that's all."

"Sovereign Nocturnal" can be best described as very organic, and almost ritualistic down tempo masterpiece; channeled through the musical styles and mixtures of black, folk, and doom metal. Reminiscent slightly of works by bands like Wolves in the Throne Room, yet with a style all their own, the songs show a very immense musical maturity that their last release lacked slightly. Now grown up and all-powerful, Velnias drags us into their nocturnal world, whether by our will or theirs. In undertaking a more doomy aesthetic to this release, the band had much more room to incorporate different ideas within this new release. The songs are longer, allowing more compositions and small details within each bellowing track. This being said, each song does not sound rushed at all, but more carefully drawn out. From the beginning of the first track, one may note that there are very interesting stylistic approaches that the band began to take in order to enhance its already encasing atmosphere. With guitar distortion swelling to a point in which it almost sounds natural, and plenty of the drummer's utilization of the toms to craft an almost tribal sound, one could easily assume that if they had not made this a metal album, it could have passed as a very effective ritualistic ambient release. The first track is somewhat mellow and drawn out, perhaps done in order to ease the listener's passing into their world. Then, throughout the second track, the pace begins to pick up, little by little. By the end of the second track, the drums end up not sounding like metal drumming at all, but moreover a percussive composition with the toms. By the end of the third track, it eases once again. It is as if the album gets progressive, and then smoothly mellows out for the listener's safe departure back in the real world. As far as the sound and the atmosphere, an album cannot get much more encasing than this. Once drawn into this dark, melodic, and epic world, it is uneasy to find your way out until the end. This being said, the atmosphere is almost impenetrable. Seemingly, the goal of this release was to bring the listener outside of his or her current state and join theirs, in their netherworld of nature and somber nostalgia. One can almost taste their reverence for an untainted world, and their disregard for the fallible and insipid modern society that disappoints them."

Karma to Burn's "Wild Wonderful Purgatory" can perhaps be seen more accurately as a modern take on the power trio approach of such groups as the Jimi Hendrix Experience, Cream, and Rush. With the spacy, almost psychedelic and experimental nature present, perhaps the first two fit better. However, the hard-edged metallic fury calls to mind more closely Rush's debut. These guys have such a great skill at creating dynamic melodies that you never really seem to notice that they have opted to forego the vocals altogether on this second release. Few recording artists aspire to the stylistic purity of Karma to Burn, and nowhere is this fact better demonstrated than on "Almost Heathen". Even the title reinforces the near-decadence, and the strange but necessary elusiveness of artistic completeness. To say that Almost Heathen "rocks" would actually be a disservice to disc. It is more than a great record. It is form as function, the combination of craft and content, meditative, aloof, and sublime, if only for its singularity. Each of the ten non-sequentially numbered tracks do more than rock; they turn and roll, twist and slide, rattle and hum like large metal life forms, first rolling over desolate landscapes on four wheels, then standing upright, growing hair and pounding the rocky soil with the sun-bleached bones of Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, Sleep, and Kyuss. Picking highlights is impossible, as each "song" acts more like a minutely textured tile in an all-black mosaic, relying heavily on the listener's reflection, leaving the assignment of meaning to individual imagination. Not only does California's the Fucking Wrath have one of the best names going, but as Terra Fire proves yet again, they've got the cajones to own it outright. Dirty, borderline sloppy and knee-jerk, an air of Turbonegro's ominous bleakness smashes around with the same acerbic grunt Lords and Zeke can't medicate themselves off of, sludgy, howling doom-blues only Melvins would dare make contact with, touches of Death Breath's resounding, revolving rhythms and even aspects of Black Sabbath's loose jams. While that seems like enough to make one hell of a bitch's brew on these handful of tunes, the group then opt to toss in some rudimentary Slayer/Metallica riffs from their salad days, ensuring Terra Fire is just brilliant. While other acts struggle to wrap their feeble music around any one of those aspects, these guys throw 'em around like dirty water down a toilet bowl. Heavy, dark and fast, it's as if Blue Cheer dropped the free love hippie shit, grabbed a few High On Fire albums and learned the value of a tastily lumbering riff. ---By Keith Carman

"The Deluge" was a very important album in the history of the mighty Manilla Road. Mark "The Shark" Shelton travels back in time: "It was, at the time of its release, the most intricate and complex project that Manilla Road had ever done. The production was better than any of our previous releases and the musicianship was also. 'Open The Gates' had been very successful for us and we were riding high at the time. It was maybe one of the most fun albums to record back in that era. We were all brothers in arms and the world was there for our taking and that's exactly what we tried to do with 'The Deluge': take over the world. I think every aspect of the band was coming together for us very nicely at that time and with all the good feelings about ourselves it was not much of a surprise to us that the album turned out really good. As for the albums that we did after that, 'The Deluge' helped set a higher standard for production and musicianship as well as the composition. It also lead us lyrically into even more historical realms than we had ever traversed before. More literary topics and lyrics and it also helped set the pace for how much research we put into a project. After 'The Deluge' we continued to work more and more in the framework of literature, art and philosophy meets Heavy Metal. I think 'The Deluge' was our first really big step towards becoming a truly epic band."

After 30 years of playing the very best Heavy Metal around, you'd think Manilla Road would finally slow up and write a bad album by now, right? After all these years they have yet to write something bad! And on top of not writing anything bad, Manilla Road always tries to re-invent themselves with every album they create. This album is no different. Seriously, when you hear this, you'll think Mark "The Shark" has written his thick-est and fat-est riffs to date. I mean really, this stuff sounds like Candlemass trying to write a Manilla Road album, or for you know-it-all Manilla Road fans, this is more along the lines of "Hammer Of The Witches" type riff oriented songs throughout the whole album. I'm completely surprised with the direction of this album. I wouldn't call it a Doom Metal album, but it has some really Doom-y and off-the-wall moments. In the end, it sounds like Manilla Road.

Originally released on Battle Cry Records on July 25th 2005 and now out of print. Divided into three parts, Trilogy I: The Frost Giant's Daughter (consisting of three individual tracks), Trilogy II: Out Of The Ashes (consisting of another three numbers) and finally Trilogy III: Gates of Fire (making up the closing three compositions), the album is 72:16 minutes of sheer Epic Metal glory. "Gates of Fire" is a real masterpiece in the typical traditional Manilla Road style and in contrast to "Atlantis rising" and also "Spiral Castle" experimental passages are kept to an absolute minimum. Somehow, compositions like the outstanding up-tempo opener "Riddle of Steel" are going back to the very early albums ("Invasion" and "Metal") - an absolute must for every 80's Manilla Road maniac. Mark Shelton is sharing the vocals (with Bryan "Hellroadie" Patrick) on a couple of tracks, which works absolutely fine and adds another dimension to the sound of the band. Mark's guitar work is as unique as ever. It’s fantastic to see the UK doom scene flourishing that way it has been over the last few years with bands like the almighty Ramesses, Electric Wizard and Silent Winter all releasing material that has received much critical acclaim this year already. Following on this fine tradition is Dartmoor-based The Wounded Kings whose mysteriously-entitled debut full length “Embrace of the Narrow House” is one of the finest examples of traditional cryptic doom this writer has had the pleasure of reviewing for a good while.
Like the soundtrack to some lost Hammer Horror or Lucio Fulci flick these seven haunting tracks sound like the bastard witch-child of the first Sabbath album, Candlemass and Electric Wizard combined, which is certainly no bad thing. Swathes of organ-drenched eeriness plague the opening title track as the guitars, drums and sampled spoken word vocals slowly build into one of the most spooked doom epics put to tape. George Birch’s echo/delay-laden vocals add a whole new dimension to these already engaging tracks, with the very live-sounding recording saturating everything in that graveyard ritual atmosphere essential for making this music work so well. Not only that, the actual song writing is second to none as “Melanthos” and the suitably-titled “Master of Witches” show in superb style, letting the simple despair-ridden riffs and excellent use of abyssal like space seep and lock into mind and spirit.

HeavyPink is the new solo project of T. Dallas Reed, the multi-instrumentalist and driving force behind Port Orchard, Washington, rock revivalists Stone Axe and the guitarist and principle songwriter for Mos Generator, among other acts. Heavy Pink explores a broader, more lush and psychedelic soundscape than his other bands employ making a truly glorious sound. More info... HeavyPink, the latest project of T. The vinyl single is limited to 300 and features two brand new cuts, “Flower and Song” and “There is a Light,” exploring a rarely-heard psychedelic side of the Port Orchard, Washington, native’s songwriting.
Reed, who is notoriously DIY, played all the instruments on HeavyPink, sang himself, and recorded the material at his own HeavyHead studio. Fans of Stone Axe will be thrilled to discover that although he is working in a different style, the signature elements of Reed’s work remain intact, most pivotally that there’s zero bullshit involved.
He explains the project’s origins thusly: “Before Mos Generator took our hiatus in 2009 we were working on an album to be called HeavyPink. When the band shelved the project I decided to pick up the concept and use it as a tool to try different recording and writing techniques. I look at it as an experiment in heavy and beautiful music, like 'Master of Reality' meets 'Pet Sounds,' meets 'Into the Pandemonium' all in one and produced by Phil Spector.”

Those Spaniards may have had to change their moniker due to copyrights problems (how rock n'roll is that?!) but make no mistake, this is exactly the same band that crushed both our souls and balls with two already heavier-than-thou albums, 2007's 'Breed the Chosen One' and the following year's 'Dead Throne Monarch'. But somehow, 'Weight of Coronation' is a tad of a different beast though… This being said, their music still weights more than a pack of bricks thrown from the 10th floor and as soon as opening track "Speaking in Tongues" will kick you in right in the nuts, you'll be in awe of their amazingly grainy and juicy six-strings sound, like some weird Yeti crawling out step by step from a lake of black tar. And if the title alone of the track "Crushed and Drugged to the Swamp" doesn't sound like a nasty plan, nothing will. But the (dark) beauty of 'Weight' doesn't lie only in its sense of gravity. Having thrown the rules out of the window, this power-trio greatest strength is their uncanny ability to make utter darkness and light meets. For every brutal pummeling riff they throw at you, they also can showcase the next minute mesmerizing melodies and beautiful (yeah you heard us) 70's rock feeling. Fuck, how many bands can pull off smashing your head through a wall ("Mass Burial Punishement") and then when you're down bleeding enchant you with some ALICE IN CHAINS-goes-sludge ("Sovereign") where some great Hammond organ is being poured on you like sweet honey on a hot chocolate cake freshly out of the oven?! Wolfhead - Self Titled CD You’d think that a band born in 2008 after some drunk rehearsals in between black/death outfit BETWEEN THE FROST guitarist Iosue and guitar-wizard-cum-producer and leader of old-school death-metal warlords GRAVEYARD would only mean buzzsaw guitars, grinding drums and putrid production wouldn’t you? Except that WOLFHEAD won’t let be pigeonholed that easily and Javi himself step furiously on any possible categorization: “It lies somewhere rock n’roll, heavy-metal, stoner, doom, grunge, black-metal, whatever! A song sounds like BATHORY but then moves on to TROUBLE territories, then towards MOTÖRHEAD highway before taking a left-turn somewhere in between old ENSLAVED and DARKTHRONE… IN a way, it’s the exact opposite of GRAVEYARD that stands for a very specific sound. For WOLFHEAD, whatever sounds cool to our ears will make it, let it be keyboards, harmonized vocals, strange instrument or even harmonica!” Confused? You betcha. And don’t you forget some ALICE IN CHAINS, BLACK SABBATH or SOLITUDE AETERNUS thrown in the bin for good measure… Recorded in Barcelona in Javi’s own Moontower studios in between October 2008 and December 2009, such a mix bag could easily have been a recipe for disaster without the proper vocalist to pull it off. Enter Ivan, the already legendary front man of the sadly defunct GREAT COVEN, whose legacy is now being carried by WARCHETYPE: he might be the only guy in this galaxy capable to have one foot in Birmingham circa 1970 and the other one in Valhalla along Thor the god of thunder, as exampled on the eight minutes plus epic, “Sons Of Asgard”. Or pull off such a relaxed and yet fitting performance for the band’s surprising entirely acoustic rendition of PINK FLOYD’s ode to their fallen brother Syd Barrett, “Wish You Were Here”.
Taking the name Castle from his original concept of building a "Castle of the Mind", guitarist and songwriter Mat Davis has drawn on the heavy sound history of his native San Francisco to write an album that smashes the modern metal mold with thrash velocity, scorching psyched-out riffs, thunderous drumming and literate occultism on this 11-song, 44-minute debut.

Lost heavy stoner rock highlight from 2008 finally released on delicious vinyl! To be honest, I did not have `Get my ass kicked` on my schedule this morning. I figured I`d just sip some coffee and maybe take a nap. But then this bruiser dropped on my lap and the whole fuckin` room started spinning. Forty-something minutes later and I`m covered in sweat and bleeding from the forehead. The awesomely named White Witch Canyon is the spangly new project of singer/guitar wrangler/buzz king Eric Hagen, formerly of stoner rock champs Greenhouse Effect. As such, this is not a huge departure from that band: it`s acid-eating Sab-ra cadabra, full of thick, meaty riffs that sound like wooly mammoths plowing through walls of blood-stained snow, bare-chested, flared denim vox, and lava-lamping super jams that practically beg you to play `em on a Camaro`s blown-out cassette deck. Majestic shit, man. If Monster Magnet have let you down these past few years - and let`s face it, they have - then I encourage to sluice down White Witch Canyon. The world is a fast moving place, fraught with haste and impatience. Wouldn't it be nice, if at least occasionally the rotation of this earth would decelerate? Wight provide a soundtrack for this: With atmospheric slow-motion tunes they celebrate an authentic black sabbath which makes even the Beelzebub himself turn trippy-psychedelic. Just like a cathedral, their epic sound rises aloft. But do not fear: Just shortly before the world threats so finally perish, Kyuss and comrades come around on a train and re-quicken this desert. Wight are far, far afield and some smoking heads are guaranteed for friends of Saint Vitus or Goatsnake as well as for the followers of Earth or 35007.

What really fuels Green & Wood's ascent from the Iommi-worshipping throng is the group's technical prowess and tendency to indulge in erratic and turbulent spouts of proggy wizardry in between the colossal trances of the more familiar metallic territory. Recalling lost 70's classics as Socrates Drank the Conium, Randy Holden's Population II, and Jerusalem's eponymous heavy prog masterpiece, these exercises in prog-infused hard rock suggest a nuanced understanding of heavy metal's roots far exceeding the extent of their contemporaries. Green and Wood clearly doesn't drink from the same bongwater as the rest of the doom droves.
