Live Concert Report: 2021 Josefstadt (Day Two)

Day two of Josefstadt has ended. Before we get into some photos from the day, I wanted to touch on a couple of issues from my day one report.

By late afternoon on day two, there were no signs that fire had ravaged part of the food area on day one. New tents were in place, new signage, new cooking equipment, and everything was back to normal. I’m not sure how such a quick renewal can take place, but someone made it happen.

The sound/lighting booth that I mentioned as being a viewing obstruction on day one was moved back quite a bit for day two. There were still hundreds of people with little or no view behind it during the Marduk and Hypocrisy sets though.

Now for some day two photos.

Mean Messiah

Laura Guldemond of Burning Witches

Truchło Strzygi

I felt like Truchło Strzygi had the best performance of the day—very lively and entertaining. Smiles from ear to ear all across the audience.

Kids get in free!

Dordeduh panorama on the Octagon stage

The above photo was taken from the previously mentioned bar area that serves as a balcony of sorts for the Octagon stage. Best view in the house, but, unfortunately, only 15 or so people can fit.

Ad Nauseam

The day three update won’t happen for a few days, as I will be too busy traveling, but it will happen. I promise. I’m really looking forward to Azarath and Mgla today.

More photos (and I mean dozens more) will eventually be posted here.

Burning Witches Shares New Music Video

Heavy metal coven Burning Witches has just released their fourth full-length record "The Witch Of The North," which the band celebrated with a streamed release show for fans around the world. Today, they're following up with the release of yet another music video for their newest single and one of the album's strongest anthems "We Stand As One!" You can check it out below.

Few bands in recent memory have established themselves as quickly as Burning Witches, and few are able to write such timeless, grand tunes with somnambulistic ease; carrying Judas Priest in their hearts without becoming overly nostalgic, whilst rapidly developing their own unique voice.

Now, the Witches have opened a particularly gripping page in their grimoire: an album forged in the fires of a pandemic, created with patience, finesse and pitch-black lifeblood during a time in which even the Swiss coven had to retreat into the isolation and quietness of the dark woods. Right there they hatched new spells and new ways of weaving their potent magic into the world. For Freya, for the druidesses, for the witches as past, present and future.

Several recording sessions with Swiss metal legend V.O. Pulver and their producer, thrash titan Schmier (Destruction), at the end of 2020, enabled this foremost incarnation of the band to take their explosive heavy metal to new heights. This coven can’t be stopped by prejudice, nor by stakes, nor diatribes. The era of the Witches has begun. And anyone who won’t join this black magic circle will bitterly regret it for all eternity. Burning Witches Releases New Music Video

Today, heavy metal coven Burning Witches are proud to release not only the title track of their upcoming new studio album, "The Witch Of The North," but also their first ever high-quality music video to go along with it. And they couldn't have chosen a better date for the release of this new single; it coincides with Walpurgis Night, the traditional night of the witches, deeply rooted in Central and Northern European folklore.

While the song "The Witch Of The North" showcases Burning Witches at their heaviest and features their most anthemic chorus to date, its music video brings the stunning album artwork by Claudio Bergamín to life. Witness the forest witch conjure a demon warrior out of the flames and lead it into battle. Sorcery, swordplay, fire and blood - it doesn't get more METAL than this!

Burning Witches comment on the video:
"It was a big dream for us, to finally produce a video clip with an acclaimed company like Grupa 13 and a bit of a bigger budget. The title track of the new album was the perfect song to transpose visually, it is not a typical single, it is more of an epic grower. This way we have visually reflected the song for eternity! We hope you will love it as much as we do!"

Happy Walpurgis Night! More...

Burning Witches To Release New Album In May

Swiss heavy metal coven Burning Witches and Nuclear Blast Records are delighted to reveal the magnificent cover artwork and the tracklist for the band's fourth full-length, "The Witch Of The North," which will be released on May 28th 2021.

From the epic title-track to the album’s catchiest anthem "We Stand As One" over to the ballad ‘Lady Of The Woods’ and speedy riff attacks like "Thrall," "Flight Of The Valkyries," and "Nine Worlds," "The Witch Of The North" marks a new highlight in the band’s career, with vocalist Laura brilliantly shifting from aggressive to seductive with ease. It doesn't matter if you have followed the band since its humble beginnings in 2015 or just recently fell for their charms, Burning Witches are doubtlessly one of the most sensational bands in heavy metal right now.

Burning Witches comment:
"We are happy and proud to already announce the new album and show you the terrific cover art! We have grown together as a team and have evolved our sound to the next level, the Witches 2021 are heavier and more epic than ever! So is the cover: Claudio Bergamín's amazing art is the perfect reflection of the record: icy, mystical, timeless and powerful! Please meet the The Witch Of The North and fall in love with our evolution!“

The cover artwork was created by Chilean artist Claudio Bergamín (Judas Priest's Firepower) and it sets the mood for the enthralling journey through enchanted forests and across snow-capped mountain tops that is: "The Witch Of The North."

Cover artist Claudio Bergamín states:
"The one and only Schmier from Destruction, reached out to me to ask if I'd be interested in doing the new Burning Witches album cover. Needless to say I was delighted to jump on board. The band had a very unique concept so it took me a couple of weeks to come up with an idea I was happy with. They wanted a classic looking illustration; pretty much in the vibe of Ken Kelly and Frank Frazetta. The Forest Witch was inspired by The Ents from 'Lord of The Rings' and Botticelli's 'Birth of Venus'. The girls' depictions were done in pure comic book style, and working on their faces to make them look as close as possible to the real people was a lot of fun. I wish more bands would ask me for that!" More...

Ross The Boss Cancels European Tour Dates

Former Manowar guitarist Ross The Boss has confirmed that his headlining tour across Europe, which was set to feature support from Burning Witches and Trauma, has now been cancelled. The dates will be rescheduled to take place next year. A statement from the band's official Facebook page reads as follows:

"Effective immediately the Ross The Boss Tour November / December 2020 across Europe is being rescheduled into 2021. Unfortunately due to the continuing Pandemic worldwide it is not possible to perform as scheduled for these November and December 2020 shows.

"The Band is fully committed to replacing these dates in the Fall of 2021 in
the same markets. We will shortly, once all the shows have been secured, announce all the new
details. The band is looking forward to returning and performing for all the fans."

In related news, Burning Witches has announced that it's unlikely they will appear on the rescheduled tour, due to conflicting schedules which includes work on their fourth album.

"The sad news about the @Rossthebossband tour cancellation was expected and it still it brings us sorrow. It would have been a killer package, now obvious circumstances force us to go new ways! Moving the tour again to a new yet unknown date in 2021 will most likely not work with our schedule for next year.

"We are currently working on the new album, that is planned to be released in April/May 2021 via Nuclear Blast records. We wanna wish Ross all the best and say cheers for the invitation, hopefully we can play together another time when the world is back on track! Stay safe everybody!"

Swiss heavy metal outfit Burning Witches has announced that, following the formation of her new band Crypta with former Nervosa members Fernanda Lira and Luana Dametto, guitarist Sonia Anubis has parted company with the band. A statement from the group reads as follows:

"Many saw it coming: Sonia has left the Burning Witches!

"But first of all, this Friday, we will have a LIVE JAM with some amazing girls and friends. More news on Wednesday! Please stay tuned!

"We will take our time to search and announce the new lead player, please understand we are as shocked as you are. We will use the Corona-times useful, to choose the right person for our lead guitarist position.

"We want to thank all the fans for the amazing support and will keep you posted about our future moves! Stay positive! It sounds like a cliché but it was never more meaningful than now: WE ARE READY TO FIGHT!!!" More...

Burning Witches introduced their new frontwoman Laura this summer alongside the release of a brand new single titled 'Wings Of Steel'. The song, which showcases Laura's vocals for the first time, is already available digitally but as a gift to fans, the band have decided to release it on 12" vinyl. The Wings Of Steel EP will be out on December 6, 2019 via Nuclear Blast and includes the aforementioned track, alongside three live recordings from Wacken Open Air 2019. Today the band has launched an official playthrough video for the song, which features the band's axe slingers, Romana and Sonia. You can check it out below.

Romana comments, "'Wings Of Steel' has a classic thrash/speed metal riff, that has its inspiration in the old school sound. It is one of my fave songs of the new record and that is one of the reasons why we have had the tune in our setlist for a while already. It has had amazing reactions live and will be a mainstay in our live set for a long time! I'm overjoyed to present you our first official guitar playthrough with my burning sister Sonia - I hope you enjoy it as much as we did recording it!"

Sonia adds, "'Wings Of Steel' is a powerful and speedy heavy metal song. The combination of the thrashy verse riffs and its melodic chorus makes this song absolutely epic. I love playing this song live because it's the moshpit track, and when people mosh; it’s like a mutual exchange of adrenaline between the musician and the audience! Hell yes!" More...

Hear Her Roar: Women In Metal

Today marks International Women's Day, in which we remember the contributions of many great women throughout history as well as in the world today. The day was first celebrated by the Socialist Party Of America on February 28th 1909. The tradition of celebrating women on March 8th was first done in the then newly formed Soviet Union, who declared the day a national holiday. It was adopted by other Communist and Socialist countries as a holiday before the United Nations recognised the event in 1975. Today the significance of the day varies, still being a public holiday in some countries, a day of protest in others and officially ignored in a number of other nations. So, what does all this have to do with heavy metal? Marie Curie, Rosa Luxemburg, Angela Davis and Joan Of Arc may not be common names in the metal world, but we have plenty of our own heroines and ladies to rival the lords.

For a long time, the role of women in heavy metal was seen by outsiders as miniscule or worse, nothing more than objects. Perhaps women have more of a role in metal music than previously thought however. Let's take for example what's considered the first heavy metal album, "Black Sabbath" by Black Sabbath. The cover art depicts a mysterious woman, cloaked in black, stood right in the middle of an illustration of Mapledurham Watermill in Oxfordshire. This is only a tiny example of course, but as heavy metal grew, so did the presence of women. Bands would often sing about women, be it in the context of relationships ("Victim Of Changes" by Judas Priest for example, was comprised of two earlier songs "Whisky Woman" and "Red Light Lady,") sex "Charlotte The Harlot" by Iron Maiden or as inspirations ("Jet City Woman" by Queensryche.)
