Angra And Operation: Mindcrime In London

Whenever bands announce a tour of the United Kingdom, or even just one show, one of the most likely venues to show up will be the The Underworld in Camden. It's a very famous venue, located under The World's End pub, which is a great place to listen to metal over a beer. Inside the venue itself on this occasion, Brazilian metal veterans Angra would be headlining a show which also featured special guest Geoff Tate (former Queensryche vocalist) and his collective, Operation: Mindcrime, as well as American outfit, Halcyon Way.

Though the show was scheduled for six, problems meant that doors didn't open until seven and subsequently scheduled opening act Ravenscry were not able to perform. Halcyon Way were also dealt a blow as they were only able to play for around twenty minutes, in a set which appeared to contain no more than five songs. There was little time, as a result, for the band and audience to connect and their set seemed to be over before it really began. For this reason, it's unfair to really judge Halcyon Way on this performance. More...

The Best And Worst Of Metal In 2015

We've almost got another year in the bag, so it's time to take a look back at all that went down throughout 2015 in the world of heavy metal.

This was an uneven year featuring both highs and lows, and metal didn't escape the drama frequent in other styles of music at all in the last 12 months. Echoing previous schisms in famous black metal bands, Immortal finally took its turn imploding and split into two, and this was probably the worst year in recent memory for U.S. metal tours.

On the flip side of that, a solid number of amazing albums saw release, and metal also catapulted to the top of the charts with some major releases that made people outside the underground take notice.

After two solid years dominated by reunions and reboots, it looks like that craze is finally winding down. This year most notably we saw the return of Faith No More with “Sol Invictus,” but on the more underground end industrial black metal outfit Diabolicum also came back with a first album in 14 years. Although not quite on the same scale of time, Arcturus finally returned with a new full-length after a decade's waiting.

While there are less surprise reunions announced for the coming year, there is one classic outfit hitting the road to take note of, as Black Sabbath's “final” tour - dubbed The End - runs through most of 2016 across the globe. While we wait to see what's in store in the coming year, first we'll look back at everything that went down throughout 2015.

The Good: The Best Of Metal In 2015

Both Slayer and Lamb Of God ended up topping the charts with their latest albums (with Lamb Of God even getting nominated for a Grammy). It's not often a metal album hits #2 in the world, but Slayer managed to do it. While not everyone loved the album, the exposure alone is good for the genre overall.

But how was the more underground metal? Simply put: pretty killer, if you knew were to look. There was a solid mix of great albums from long time bands like Amorphis, Cattle Decapitation, Enslaved, and Soilwork, as well as excellent material from newer and less prolific groups like Alkaloid, Tribulation, and Lychgate.

The tried and true classic outfits from Cradle Of Filth to Iron Maiden to My Dying Bride made appearances, and there were some seriously ambitious undertakings (Swallow The Sun released a TRIPLE album). A handful of bands that were already solid managed to really outdo themselves with stellar material this year though, including Subterannean Masquerade, Code, Shining, and Melechesh. More...

Geoff Tate To Appear On Avantasia Album

Avantasia's 7th studio album "Ghostlights" will be released via Nuclear Blast in early 2016. After revealing the return of Jorn Lande, another guest star can be announced - Operation: Mindcrime (former Queensryche) vocalist Geoff Tate.

This news may be met with a somewhat less enthusiastic response considering how Operation: Mindcrime's new album "The Key" is being received overall (reviewed here).

Avantasia's Tobias comments: "I am proud to announce a very special guest today: Mr. Geoff Tate! I have been fortunate enough to meet many amazing classic metal vocalists. Whenever we've talked about our influence as vocalists the name Geoff Tate was brought up.

"Throughout his incredible career of more than 30 years Geoff has constantly explored new territory as an artist and vocalist, while he has always managed to maintain this distinctive signature vocal sound that makes him stand out.

"His contribution sounds nothing but amazing, and you will immediately know why the man had such a huge impact on vocalists and fans around the globe! Enchanting, unique, amazing, progressive in the purest sense of the word! Thank you for joing the Avamtasoa family, Geoff Tate!"

Operation: Mindcrime Is "Re-Inventing The Future"

Operation: Mindcrime - the new band featuring former Queensyrche frontman Geoff Tate - released a new music video for the track "Re-Inventing The Future." The song appears on the album "The Key," which is set for release on September 18th via Frontiers Records.

"Musically, this album is quite adventurous," says Tate of "The Key". "Of course there are key elements in the music, melody and phrasings that are really identifiable, but throughout my career I've opened my eyes and ears to new standards and arrangements, and that's what keeps things fresh and exciting as an artist — we've thrown out the rules for this record, and it's been really liberating. I'm a fan of old prog, and that music didn't stick to rules. It's inspiring and enjoyable to be able to explore, and it's great being in a position to write without constraints."

The track listing for "The Key" is:

1. Choices
2. Burn
3. Re-Inventing The Future
4. Ready To Fly
5. Discussions In A Smoke Filled Room
