Former Angra Vocalist Passes Away

Brazilian power metal veterans Angra has confirmed reports that original vocalist André Matos has passed away at the age of 47. A statement from the band (loosely translated) reads as follows:

"Dear fans and friends: in respect of the passing of the co-founder of angra, Andre Matos, we decided to cancel today's It wouldn't make sense to go on stage to play while we cry for the loss of our journey companion, whom we owe much of our Andre's legacy is confused with angra's, and so we're going to go up to the stage of temple music today, but only to honor him and remember his importance in the history of each of us, who lives the heavy metal Daily. Matos formed Angra in 1991 while attending Santa Marcelina Music College with guitarists Rafael Bittencourt and André Linhares. Two years later, the band released their first album, "Angels Cry" and with Matos on vocals, the band then released "Holy Land" in 1996 and "Fireworks" in 1998, before Matos, along with bassist Luis Mariutti and drummer Ricardo Confessori, left in 2001.

The trio would form the band Shaman, who would change their name to Shaaman due to legal issues after their first album but received commercial success owing to the song, "Fairy Tale" featuring in the soap opera "Beijo do Vampiro" ("Vampire Kiss.") Matos then went on to launch a solo career, which at one time featured future Sepultura drummer Eloy Casagrande and released three studio album, "Time To Be Free" in 2007, "Mentalize" in 2009 and "The Turn Of The Lights" in 2012. Andre Matos To Play "Angels Cry" In Full On Tour

Former Angra vocalist Andre Matos will celebrate the 20th Anniversary of his former band's first LP "Angels Cry" this year by performing the entire release on a upcoming 2013 tour this year in support of his latest solo album "The Turn of the Lights." Matos was with Angra from its inception in 1991 to 2000 when he left to form Shaman.

The press release reads as follows:

"2013 is a special year for Andre Matos. The vocalist, along with his solo band, will launch the promotion tour for his new album 'The Turn of the Lights' with an extra bonus for the fans: the band will play the album 'Angels Cry' in full.

"Released in 1993, 'Angels Cry' was Andre Matos' first album with Angra, just recently formed at the time. The vocalist, despite his young age, had already recorded two successful albums with the band Viper and studied classical piano, composition and conducting. Besides recording vocals and keyboards for all tracks, Andre Matos was the writer and arranger of nine out of ten tracks on the album, including 'Carry On,' which became a worldwide heavy metal hit. With his cutting edge combination of power and progressive metal, classical music rhythm and elements, 'Angels Cry' became a huge international success and placed the Brazilian band among the main power metal bands of their time." The album is due for release on August 22, 2012 through Avalon Online and marks the first since the 2009 release "Mentalize."
