Interview

Trapped Under Ice Gives the "Big Kiss Goodnight"

One might expect a band that names itself after a vintage early 80s Metallica song to be a high top-wearing, retro-thrash act. But Baltimore’s Trapped Under Ice has far more in common with Vision of Disorder, Madball and Hatebreed than Hetfield, Mustaine and company.

One of the most punishing forces on the current hardcore scene, Trapped Under Ice’s debut full-length, “The Big Kiss Goodnight,” is a violent blitz that pays homage to classic East Coast h/c, as well as West Coast brethren Terror. The disc is due out Oct. 11 on Good Fight Records.

Frontman Justice Tripp took a few minutes out from a break at his Baltimore home to talk with Metalunderground.com about the new album, what hardcore means to him and working with New Found Glory guitarist/producer Chad Gilbert (A Day to Remember, H2O, Shai Hulud). More...

We had been confirmed for quite a while for a direct support slot on a good 6-weeks U.S. tour in October and November, and yesterday it was decided that this tour is now being postponed to late November into December. We are not available at that time. Our flights to the U.S. have already been booked for weeks, and we’ve been left high and dry again… somehow we’re just not lucky over there it seems!"

Steven Wilson Posts Two New Music Videos

Steven Wilson, better known as the frontman for progressive rock act Porcupine Tree, has released two new music videos taken from his forthcoming solo album "Grace For Drowning." The album, which is the follow up to his 2008 solo debut "Insurgentes," which will see its North American release on September 27th through K-Scope Music. The record will contain two separate albums from Wilson packaged together. One album has been titled "Deform To Form A Star" while the second will carry the title of "Like Dust I Have Cleared From My Eye." Steven Wilson commented on "Grace For Drowning" by saying;

"Insurgentes was an important step for me into something new. This record takes that as a starting point, but it’s more experimental and more eclectic. For me the golden period for music was the late sixties and early seventies, when the album became the primary means of artistic expression, when musicians liberated themselves from the 3 minute pop song format, and started to draw on jazz and classical music especially, combining it with the spirit of psychedelia to create 'journeys in sound' I guess you could call them. So without being retro, my album is a kind of homage to that spirit. There’s everything from [Ennio] Morricone-esque film themes to choral music to piano ballads to a 23 minute progressive jazz–inspired piece. I’ve actually used a few jazz musicians this time, which is something I picked up from my work remixing the King Crimson records."

Neurasthenia Splits With Guitarist

Neurasthenia has checked in with the following announcement about parting ways with the band's guitarist:

"After many years the solo guitar player Phil decide to leave the band due to personal problems with the other members. Phil joined in the band when he was 17 and grew up with the thrash teachings that Neil and Lehmann had already worked up some years before.

"Through the huge experience that the band had growing up since the founder played in others band, Phil become a really good musician and an amazing solo player. But the Neurasthenia's way is to hard, full of compromise and full of sacrifice.....so at the end of July 2011, unluckily this guy decide to leave all of his pains and to drift away from his only reason to leave the band. Neil, Lehmann and Rudy, without words can only say that this is the worst decision that he could choose....but this is it.

"So, all the best for this person that some months ago we called 'Brother,' and now is the time to continue to destroy everything with or without the fourth element!!"
