Waylander Gives A Lesson In Heritage And Metal

It is hard to believe that nearly twenty years has passed since brothers Ciaran "Ardchieftain" O'Hagan and his brother Dermot started the pagan band Waylander in Northern Ireland. Through many years of demos and line up changes, Waylander is back with it's fourth album, "Kindred Spirits." The album is in the vein of a heavier pagan metal direction, which the band had shown signs of gravitating towards on their last album.

Another thing that is immediately apparent is the rich storytelling that Waylander is known for. Every album of theirs is not only a bona fide metal experience but an anthropology lesson as well. Vignettes of the Gaelic/Irish history permeate "Kindred Spirits" in the same way they have graced every other release. Chieftain O'Hagan not only sings about the pagan way, but lives it as well. He is involved in many of the traditions that make him and the band distinctly Irish.

Being from Northern Ireland and having a band composed of members on both sides of the divide, it is no wonder that Waylander chooses to focus on the true Irish traditions rather than identifying with the socio-political vagaries and strife that cause dissension. Chieftain was amicable enough to visit with us today and discuss Waylander's direction on the new album "Kindred Spirits" and the relevant tales that have inspired the music of the band. More...

Devin Townsend On New Album "Epicloud"

After finishing up a four part interconnected series of albums (check out our reviews of "Ghost" and "Deconstruction"), Devin Townsend remains ever on the move and is already preparing for the release of his next project, titled "Epicloud." With the album set to drop later this month, I got the opportunity to speak with the eccentric metal mastermind himself to see what fans can expect from this latest sonic adventure. In his own words, "If what I do interests you, then this record is something you will probably think is good. If what I do bugs the shit out of you, then you’re not going to like it, so good luck and no hard feelings."

During our chat, Heavy Devy explained how "Epicloud" leaves the negative aspects of metal behind to put a positive focus on the good things in life, and how that necessitated using guest musicians such as Anneke from The Gathering and even a gospel choir. The surprisingly candid discussion also led to Devin discussing his connection on a personal level with metal icons such as Ihsahn over having children and a real life outside the extreme metal persona.

The full interview, available below, also explores his thought processes on the difficulty of choosing material for a live set list, an unexpected attempt at poop humor, and confirmation on an upcoming new Ziltoid album. More...

Pit Stories: The First True Metal Show Experience

Every Tuesday we chat up band members and metal fanatics to get their favorite mosh pit stories from live shows. This week guitarist Camden Cruz from Seven Kingdoms reminisces about his first true crazy pit experience at a metal show where he saw the legendary Jason Suecof:

I remember going to my first legit death metal show. It was Nechrophagist, Arsis, Nuraxis, and Cattle Decap at Will's Pub in Orlando. I was maybe 18 then just getting into the other genres of metal. I was at the front of the stage just eating up all the crazy blast beats and sweeps and it was the first time I ever saw Jason Suecof from Audiohammer. Being a huge Trivium nut back then, It was cool to finally see the guy that recorded them. The first time I saw him he was flying past the opening launching himself and his wheelchair into the sides of the pit. I just remember thinking 'Man, this guy is legit!' haha.

Seven Kingdoms is set to release new album "The Fire is Mine," which was produced by Jim Morris (Iced Earth, Obituary, JOP, Jag Panzer etc), on October 9th, 2012 through Nightmare Records. For more info on Seven Kingdoms, check out the band's Facebook profile here.

Be sure to check back in again next Tuesday as we continue to share more pit stories from metal shows. More...

Ken Sorceron Sings Abigail Williams' Swan Song

Inconsistent members, misrepresentation and the doldrums of answering interview questions with an assembly-line frame of mind have led to the dissembling of Candlelight Records’ most prolific band Abigail Williams. One question that founder and mastermind Ken Sorceron scorned was “tell me about your band name?” Abigail Williams was one of the accusing girls in the Salem Witchcraft trials. The group’s dark ambiance and orchestrations aptly describe a style of black metal that conjures images of superstition and witch burnings. Unfortunately, these ideas were not clearly expressed in their early marketing plan.

These mishaps are some of the reasons Sorceron is closing this chapter of his life. However, music is in his future plans. Metal Underground.com climbed into his van parked outside Beerland in Austin, Texas to find out more about Abigail Williams’ final hour and what the future may bring. More...

"So rejoice, friend and companion of Hell, thou who wonderest in the midst of shades among the graves, who longest for blood and bringest horror to mortals, you child of Satan, accept our sacrifice and be one with the master of slanders! Belial, Lucifer, Astaroth! Look favorably upon us! This glory is for you my lords!

"Formed in 2011 by Danazoglou and guitarist Stamos K, Satan's Wrath deal in a style of heavy metal music which harkens to the times when the death, black and thrash genres were all considered one in the same, and only leather, spikes and bullets were real!" More...

Orden Ogan Announces Track List For "To The End"

German power metal act Orden Ogen announced the track listing for the band's forthcoming LP "To the End." The album is scheduled for release on October 26, 2012 via AFM Records. Two of the featured songs, "Angels War" and "Mystic Symphony," will be familiar to fans, as the band decided to re-record the songs in the studio. Both tracks were part of the band's live set for years, but never were officially released on an album.

Vocalist/guitarist Seeb Levermann commented on the two tracks:

"It was an easy decision to have both tracks featured on an official Orden Ogan album finally. 'The Mystic Symphony' is from one of our very early demos, while 'Angels War' was part of our self-released "Testimonium A.D." recording from 2004. Since eight years now, both songs are part of our live set because the reactions have always been very good. And of course fans ever since kept asking where they could get these tracks. When we started working on 'To The End', we thought it was the perfect opportunity to 'legitimize' the two songs and make them a part of the new album."

The cover artwork for "To The End" was again created by legendary artist Andreas Marschall. Levermann added, "We’ve already worked with Andreas for our albums 'Vale' and 'Easton Hope' – and for sure we would like to continue working with him in the future. Andreas Marschall’s artworks very well fit with Orden Ogan, because we want everything to be handmade and real. Andreas gives the same attention to details as we do in the production. Therefore a digitally created cover artwork is not what we are looking for – even if it would save costs. Marschall is a passionate and exceptionally talented artist who was able to capture the mood and atmosphere we had in mind for 'To The End' – just like he did many time before in the past, with acts like Blind Guardian, In Flames or Running Wild.”

The track list for "To The End" is as follows: More...

The band is writing and recording the follow up to "Immortal Soul" and have over fifteen songs written for the release, but have recently come under fire from unnamed sources.

The statement on the band's official Facebook Page reads as follows:

"FOR THE RECORD! To all the people and other 'so called' pages that dont know what the real true story is and whats going on with Riot. First off, we are NOT cashing in on the name, Riot has never really made lots of money, not even Mark he lived with his parents til the day he passed AND we all have day jobs! We do it for the love of music and have to take time off to play. Mark was our brother and he lived with us and we took care of him up until his untimely passing and we are still deeply saddened by the death of a family member.

"Mike did ALL the guitar work on the Immortal Soul except 4 rhythm tracks that Mark layed because because of his illness he was too shakey to play correctly and It did frustate him. Don wrote most of the songs like he did on Thundersteel and Privilege of Power and has been with Mark since he co-wrote songs on Restless Breed and Born in America back in the early 80's. Mark was at the studio and was pleased with how it was coming out and was proud to call it a Riot record. This is NOT the Rock City line up, this is NOT the Fire Down Under line up, IT IS THE THUNDERSTEEL LINE UP, with the original member of that era, we were ALL fans of the early stuff with Guy and Rhett. Mark and his estates wishes were us to go on and most people want us to! We play songs WE wrote or co-wrote and play a few of Marks songs in tribute to him and the early years!

"There are bands out there playing songs and performing with ONE original guy in the band and some didnt write any of the music, Quiet Riot, Guns n Roses, Great White now Queensryche! and of course Thin Lizzy (well a couple guys, but NOT Phil) but people come out to hear songs they love. Get the REAL or REALE info hear. Mike Flyntz has been taking care of Mr. Reale since Marks death because he is like a son to him now. Have a little compassion and get the real story before you post anything you have NO clue about! Opinions are welcome, but vicious uneducated posts and comments will NOT be tolerated and will be removed and blocked. A press release will be issued soon to let you know whats coming! Shine On believers!"

Lord Graham Pyre Splits With Stuka Squadron

Bassist Lord Graham Pyre announced that he has left U.K. traditional metal act Stuka Squadron. In a post on his Facebook Page, Pyre stated:

"[I have] left the band I formed, Stuka Squadron. Not my decision and not what I wanted. Extremely sad about it, but very glad to have had the support of the fantastic press and fans. Thanks all! You have been absolutely amazing!"

No official word from the band has yet been made, nor has a replacement for Pyre been named. The exact reasons surrounding the departure are unknown. Back in July, Hauptman Beam Von Beamish was recruited to fill in for Pyre for the band's performances at Headbanger’s Open Air Festival in Germany on 25th July and Woodstock Open Air Festival.

*UPDATE: The band later issued the following statement about the departure:

"Lord Pyre has today departed the ranks of the Squadron. A co-founding member, Pyre has served the Squadron for five years, but in recent months the Squadron has been operating nearly entirely without him.

We wish Lord Pyre well in his future journeys."
