Four years since the band's debut album, Calgary based Sentient is now back. The band is pleased to announce the addition of drummer Scott Tanner to the fold, who has been a member of Thorazine and Operation Wintermist.
The boys hope to hit Calgary stages in the upcoming months and hope to see you out there to slam a few brews and get heavy. A full album of new material is set for recording as well, with details forthcoming. The following press release was issued about the band:
"Sentient was spawned in Calgary Alberta in 2004, and has been carving a bloody path to the top of the local scene ever since. Founded by Edmund Saulnier (guitar, lead vocals), Ranjit Ranawaya (bass, backing vocals) and Tod Quinlan (drums), the band quickly began melding their wide variety of influences into their own sound. Having played together in a thrash band before, Edmund and Ranjit already had a vast majority of the Sentient puzzle in place. After recruiting Tod through a local metal forum, all that was left was to find a second guitarist. After a lengthy search, it was clear that the only guitarist that fit with the rest of the band was Edmund, leaving Sentient as a three piece.
"After honing their sound at numerous live shows, 2006 saw the release of This Flesh Is Only A Cage, a self-recorded demo. Strong sales, positive reviews and even some radio play on from local university station CJSW helped to push the band further. With increasing demand from the band, as well as their growing fan base, writing began in 2008 on a new album. Recording was set for mid 2008 when tragedy struck, and Edmund was involved in a car wreck in Saskatchewan, leaving him unable to work or play guitar for six months.
"Recording for Brink Of Extinction, their 10-track debut album began in earnest in early 2009. As the band started to rev up in anticipation of the release, tensions began to increase, leading to the late 2009 departure of Tod Quinlan. The loss of Quinlan, along with increased costs almost resulted in Brink Of Extinction not seeing the light of day. When the album was finally unleashed on the metal hungry masses, it was again greeted with positive reviews and extensive airplay on CJSW’s Megawatt Mayhem."
One of the year's most unexpected doom metal albums, the debut LP from Pacific Northwestern trio Lumbar is being prepared for arrival.
Southern Lord will release "The First And Last Days Of Unwelcome" on LP and digital formats this coming November 26th, followed by a CD version direct from the band and a cassette version via Holy Mountain, with all of the band's proceeds going to aid Aaron Edge's medical expenses and treatments. The following press release was issued about the band:
"While this brutalizing slow-motion trio boasts what some are referring to as 'supergroup' status -- containing members Aaron Edge (Himsa, Iamthethorn, Roareth, Brothers Of The Sonic Cloth), Mike Scheidt (YOB) and Tad Doyle (Tad, Brothers Of The Sonic Cloth) -- Lumbar was formed by these longtime friends for much more than simply creating riffs.
"The brainchild of Aaron Edge, LUMBAR came together earlier this year when the well-known guitarist/drummer/graphic designer was unexpectedly diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. What would be his final musical endeavor before waves of rapidly-spreading pain engulfed him and extended hospital stays became more than frequent, is now his most imperative. More...

Hamburg, Germany based avant-garde metal act Todtgelichter (which was covered in our look at non-traditional black metal) is currently looking for a new guitar player due to the imminent departure of longtime member Claudio. The band comments:
"With a dedicated new guitar player we aim to strengthen our live presence in 2014 and to start the composing process for album number 5.
"We are searching for YOU: you are no rookie, you have a sense for melodies and songwriting, you play tight, groovy and in time and (ideally) are familiar with the songs of our last two albums 'Angst' and 'Apnoe.' Furthermore, you are able to rehearse twice a week in Hamburg/Hamm; you like rehearsing as much as playing live and you are always looking to improve your playing and to broaden your musical horizon.
"If all that is the case, send us a short notice to firstname.lastname@example.org and we will provide you with tabs and song examples so you can prepare for tryouts with us. Write us now – we’re waiting for your application!"
Todtgelichter released latest full-length album "Apnoe" earlier this year (reviewed here).
Eisregen will release the band's 10th studio album next month on October 25th, 2013 via Massacre Records.
"Todestage" was recorded at Klangschmiede Studio E with Markus Stock, and the cover was drawn by drummer Yantit himself. Vocalist M. Roth also recently took some time to talk about each song on "Todestage." Check out his track-by-track breakdown below:
01. Waldgott: "The album opener is a powerful composition. It sounds like a film score in the beginning, but steadily builds a certain atmosphere and ends in an anti-climax after about 6 minutes running time. This was actually the main reason why the song was composed this way. Lyrically it's a dark story about a god-like creature living in the woods, that has eradicated whole villages."
02. Todestag: "A couple of monogamous relationships can only be 'saved' with hammer strokes so that everything's worth living for again (well, for one half of the couple at least, the other one probably wouldn't like to talk about it anymore...)."
03. DSDSL (Deutschland Sucht Die Superleiche): A musical homage to Pungent Stench (Mister Schirenc himself also contributed a few leads here), lyrically my personal statement about all the reality TV bullshit you're confronted with each day. Back in the days, the sadistic voyeur had to watch "Faces Of Death" to be satisfied, nowadays you just have to turn on the evening program on TV." More...
