We've been talking to bands and fans everywhere to get their favorite mosh pit stories. This week Dave Khan of Vancouver, BC-based folk metal band Scythia shares a pit story from a Canadian pirate bar:
2009, year of our lord... We took a ferry across the Straight and played a little show.
The place was called the Cambie and it was an open concept pirate bar, constructed perhaps in one of the last few centuries. It had a particular rustic charm that felt very inviting for Scythia.
We opened our set by explaining who we were and then wasted no time in kicking off into Sailor's Accolade, which was an obvious pick. The seawater in the blood of the inn's patrons began dancing as a pit immediately formed.
The pit was unrelenting for the entire course of our set. Bodies were tossed about the front of the stage. Beer was spilled all over our guitar pedals and best of yet... Our merch booth (which in hind sight was poorly positioned near the stage) was lying completely horizontal with beer, cider and other miscellaneous bar fluids forming a thick coat over every t-shirt and CD.
We finished the set and realized that this crowd threw down. They were indeed pirates and knew the spirit of a primal pit. I shook hands with some of the more dominating pit characters only to be gifted with a combination of blood, sweat and ale.
T'was a fantastic eve of destruction!
Scythia is currently touring Canada on the "Exiled Across Canada" tour. The band also released a new song "Fierce Riders of Scythia" for free on the band's bandcamp page. Check out more of their music there or their MySpace page.
Check back every Tuesday for more pit stories.

U.K. doom act Witchsorrow will re-issue the band's self titled album on October 26th, 2010. Witchsorrow main man Nick commented on the band's place in the music industry:
"I think we sit on the outside. I've always had a bit of a distaste for the more jock end of the metal spectrum, where it's all Jagermeister, tits and clowning around. We're not like that. I don't think we could be considered 'cool' or anything, I just want the music to be a cauldron of bad vibes to tip over the audience, really.
"I wanted the band to be everything I loved about doom. I'd see a lot of bands in Vitus shirts around, but it was all feedback and sludge and screaming. I like that stuff, but there weren't hardly any bands doing doom the way I loved it, doom METAL. Some bands try not to be associated with metal, whereas we're nothing else! We're just very slow, miserable metal."
"Witchsorrow" was recorded at Foel Studios (Amon Duul II, Blue Cheer, Van Der Graaf Generator, Groundhogs, Hawkwind, Napalm Death, etc.) and produced by Chris Fielding. You can also check out the band's music via the Witchsorrow MySpace page.

Norway's Dødheimsgard has checked in with the following update about the band's activity:
"It is that time again when you throw away your leather jacket and get your straight-jacket on! A master-plan of dirty deeds is currently under construction at supervillain HQ. The first menacing news rumored is that DHG has a confirmed court order at a major open-air festival next year. A more extensive international spree is, at this very moment, under consultation with our partners in crime.
"DHG's arsenal of despicable actions on display next year are as follows: Traces of Reality, Ion Storm, Å Slakte Gud, Vendetta Assassin, Monumental Possession and more. After three years in a shared cell at the institute for the musically insane, Vicotnik and Kvohst have turned a thousand burdens into 30 new tunes and texts. Once they are given an unclean bill of health, a new album will be discharged and released...
"Two new inmates have joined the Asylum. Vooren (drums) and Blargh from Nidingr (guitars). Both Vooren and Blargh have perfected their individual crafts for years and have had extensive band-experience before joining the DHG asylum. Both are looking forward to their new existence as unproductive members of society.
"Today's line up is: Vicotnik, Kvosht, Clandestine, Jormundgand, Vooren and Blargh. Stay tuned for updates, photos, music and other sorts of twists and turns."

Singapore based metallers Wormrot have posted another tour blog online via InvisibleOranges.com. An excerpt from the blog follows.
Things have been a bit rough lately. The drive from Denver to Albuquerque, New Mexico was around 8 – 9 hours. Upon reaching there, we had some burritos for a late lunch. It was a nice change of appetite coz we’ve been having pizzas almost everyday. Don’t get me wrong, pizzas are good, but everyday you kind of feel quite sick of it. Hehe… Anyway, the gig wasn’t as massive as the one in Denver. Turnout wasn’t as big as the place, but it was OK, I guess. The good thing is, some of the band members from Noisear came down for the gig. Was great to meet them. One of them played in a side band called The Laughing Dog. Man, they really kill!! Brutal band!!! It was an honor to meet some of the boys from Noisear and share the stage with The Laughing Dog. And guess what we had for dinner… Pizzas.
The next morning, we left the place at around 8:30am. Had our usual snappy Starbucks coffee with breakfast from Arby’s and head off to Oklahoma City for a gig at The Conservatory. Another long ass drive! What was supposed to be a 10 hours drive became 12 hours due to some complications on the highway in Amarillo, Texas. For the 1st time in our lives, we experienced real flood!!! The flood was so bad that some cars were covered in water. That totally sucks big time, man! We were damn lucky not to get stuck in the flood coz all the Wormrot boys can’t swim, for goodness sake!! Traffic was slow coz they had to block some parts of the road. And so we arrived late while the 1st band was playing. No bullshit, just load in and fucking play! Another small turnout for us considering the size of the place. LOL… But it was a fun gig. Sound system was good and the crowd was crazy, too. There was no place for us to sleep that night. so Mike had to drive to a hotel so that we can all have our beauty sleep. Oh yeah, the promoter did get us some food though. Pizzas.
This morning, we had another early start at 8:30am, coz it is another 8 hours drive. Breakfasts at Denny’s were big portions. We had 1 free meal coz of birthday special. Saved $6, y’all!! And now, we’re on the way to San Antonio, Texas to share the stage with Phobia and PLF!! Stoked as fuck, let’s fucking go!More...

After running into some setbacks and having to recover and re-record a number of parts, Virgin Steele has finally completed their new album, "The Black Light Bacchanalia." Here's the final update for Metalunderground.com from frontman David DeFeis on the recording of the new album:
Well, believe it or not we have actually finished the album and sent it off to our label, Steamhammer SPV for publication/replication. It was a mad, wild time these past few weeks & days recording and mixing like banshees! But we made it. A week ago seems like an entire lifetime ago. It seems like every possible situation and change of season has occurred in a matter of hours and days. I personally went through the full dynamic range of emotional upheavals possible. One minute I was on top of the World, the next completely beneath it...and everything in between. Through it all as we say here in the Land Of Steele....we remained...Invictus!
As always, when it comes time to actually part with an album and send it off into the World, I get very crazy. I always want to completely re-do it, to go back to the beginning and live with everything longer, but this of course is impossible. I am always frantic and rushed with every album, but this one was exceptionally challenging. Its birth was very much like how they did it in the long, long past, when people like Chuck Berry or Elvis would record a song, and then it would be immediately pressed and released only a few short hours later. After finishing these final mixes, I straight away began the process to send the album over to our label, so I really did not have the opportunity to live with these final mixes, listen back and adjust anything along the way. I trust that all turned out well and can only judge things from my initial gut reaction, which was that everything seems fine and nice and raw! In the end Life goes on and all projects must have their completion, and this one is now well on its way to landing in your hands soon. I hope you enjoy it. All of us here in the House Of Steele stand behind it, and think that it makes a very appropriate soundtrack to the coming Autumnal Season. We poured all our blood, sweat, & energy into these tracks and everything from $200 dollar scotch (a very nice gift from a Fan) to 7-11 coffee went into the making of it. May it empower you and take you on journeys both strange & beautiful....

Mongrel has released their new EP "The New Breed of Old School" featuring 6 songs from their debut full length album "Fear, Lies, & Propaganda" (Screaming Ferret Wreckords / Locomotive Records), re-recorded with the band's new line-up consisting of Jessica Sierra (vocals), Adam Savage (guitar), Rev (bass), and Dave Kazukiewicz (drums).
Band founder Savage stated, "After 6 years of male singers, it was quickly decided that with the addition of our new (female) singer Jessica, it was going to be important to re-introduce the band and the songs to the fans in order to let them hear for themselves what made her the clear choice to take singer job for Mongrel. By picking songs that have essentially been fan favorites from the old album, it really allows both the long term fans as well as new people to appreciate just what Jessica and our new drummer Dave bring to the table and why we feel this is the strongest line-up the band has had to date."
"The New Breed of Old School" EP was recorded at White Sight & Sound and engineered and mixed by Jim Foster (Nullset, Graveyard BBQ, Damone, POD) September 6-7th, 2010 and was released under the band's Immolation Records banner as the band has chosen to remain independent thus far since their mutually agreed upon split with former label Screaming Ferret Wreckords last Fall with the release of the "Revenge" EP which garnered airplay on Sirius/XM, Music Choice, as well as multiple radio and online outlets both in the US and overseas.
Mongrel will be re-entering the studio with Jim Foster in October to begin recording their next full length album, slated for an early Spring 2011 release.
Physical copies of the EP will also be available at the band's upcoming shows:
October 1st - London Billiards/Club Oasis, Worcester, MA

Guitarist Scott Fraser of California thrash metal band Militia has issued the following updates on the progress of their new album:
"In DiscoBay this week doing preproduction/initial track-recording for the upcoming album of ALL NEW Militia tunes. Johnny Fain (*GobStopper Sound/Productions*) is @ the helm working some ProTools goodness & magic. So far, the music is lightyears beyond what we did in the day. And the sound we are getting is nothing short of 'hammer-of-Thor CRUSHING.' I can honestly say that the sheer power of the opening track is overwhelming."
"Pre-production wrapped up this last weekend. Matt, Tony, and I completed the first song 'SEEING RED' @ GobStopper Sound Studios in Discovery Bay, CA. The sound is pretty devastating and is WAY beyond anything from our back catalog. Unfortunately, Thayik won't be a part of the newly awakened 'beast,' and it is still unclear whether or not Dave Confer will be involved on any level. However, the the steel is being forged as I speak & the 'goods' WILL be delivered either way. "SEEING RED" is proof positive that dicks WILL be knocked into the dirt (*wink*wink*)"
