Anthropologist Sam Dunn and Banger Films have documented the history and evolution of rock’s ugly cousin, heavy metal. “Metal: A Headbanger’s Journey” (2005) broke down metal’s various styles in a heavy metal family tree, and explained through exhaustive research and interviews, the construction and progression of each style. Although the film played on network television outlets such as VH1 Classic, an hour-and-a-half film is a mere scratch on the shield of heavy metal history.
After releasing a stint of award-winning films such as “Iron Maiden: Flight 666,” and “Rush: Behind the Stage,” Banger Films returned to metal lineage, this time securing a contract with VH1 Classic to release a season of “Metal Evolution: The Series.” Each week Sam and his crew presented an hour-long segment focusing on a single sub-genre. Dunn documented everything from the prototype bands that influenced metal’s loud and raucous nature to Black Sabbath’s rise, eventually landing on newer styles such as Nu Metal and Power Metal (‘80s German to modern Finnish symphonic).
Even though Banger Films released eleven episodes, there were still major holes in the series. Viewers reached out to the film company and asked why the network didn’t release episodes on extreme metal branches such as black metal, death metal and grindcore. The simple answer is none of the networks felt those topics were suitable for television.
Now Dunn and Banger Films have set out to create “The Lost Episode,” a segment devoted to extreme metal. Metal Underground.com called Sam Dunn to discuss how he and his crew plans to write, film, finance and release “Metal Evolution Episode 12: The Lost Episode, Extreme Metal.” More...

The relentless road demons in Exhumed will add to their expanding agenda of live takeovers with a string of Japanese tour dates alongside death metal pioneers Cannibal Corpse. The shows kick off on October 15th in Tokyo and will serve as a warm up to the band’s recently announced five-week North American Tour with Napalm Death and Municipal Waste, with additional support from Vektor, Dayglo Abortions, Attitude Adjustment, Speedwolf, Martha Splatterhead’s Revenge, Repulsion and Dwarves on select dates.
Notes frontman Matt Harvey: "We are totally psyched to head back to the land of the rising sun! Japan has always been one of our favorite places to play -- the kids are amazing, the food is great, and the giant robots are just a delight! To go there with our friends in Cannibal is even cooler, and we are pumped to make sure this will be a death metal spectacle of epic proportions. It's been quite a while since we've been there so it will rule to trot out some new tunes in between sake bombs and bar hopping in Roppongi."

Austin, TX band Eagle Claw will release its sophomore album "Timing of the Void" on October 30th via ECH Records. The follow up to the group's 2010 debut "Poacher," "Timing of the Void" was recorded at Folkvang Studios and produced by Bryan Richie of fellow ATX metalheads The Sword.
Featuring eight monolithic tracks of the quartet's fist-raising "InstruMetal," the record's title and overarching theme is based on The Book of Five Rings, a text on kenjutsu and the martial arts written by Japanese swordsman Miyamoto Musashi circa 1645.
Immediately following the release of "Timing of the Void," Eagle Claw will hit the road for a U.S. tour as special guests of The Sword. The tour will launch on October 29th in Corpus Christi, TX and run through November 24th in Baton Rouge, LA. Dates are available below. More...
Slovenian thrashers Eruption have inked a deal with Xtreem Music and the band is currently working on sophomore album "Tenses Collide." This album is being recorded, mixed, and produced at Negligence Studios under the watchful eye of Jan Švigelj and Žiga Zmazek. The album will offer 8 completely new tracks as well as the song "Selfcaged," previously released as a web single but re-recorded for the purposes of the album. The following press release was also issued:
"Picking up where they left off with their debut 'Lifeless Paradise,' the first order of the day on the band's second release 'Tenses Collide' is still lethal, unadulterated Thrash as executed by well- known stalwarts of the genre such as Testament, Forbidden, Vio-lence… Instead of compromising their sound, Eruption builds on it. The edge of deadly old school Thrash got sharpened by an even deadlier coating of various influences, adding aggression to their music without sacrificing any of the melodies.
"Release date for 'Tenses Collide' is still not set, although it's expected sometime before the end of 2012 and will be defined as soon as recording and mixing work is finished. In the meantime, you can listen to the demo version of the aforementioned track 'Selfcaged' below." More...
On Day Two of ProgPower USA XIII, progressive metal newcomers Beyond The Bridge opened the show and conquered the ProgPower hangover. Moreover, they won the sincere respect of the audience as they made their USA debut performance, becoming a real fan favorite of the weekend. Between the many facial expressions of bassist Dominik Stotzem and the display of musical prowess by the band, it was hard not to enjoy the performance.
With “The Old Man and the Spirit,” their impressive debut album (reviewed here), and live show, Beyond The Bridge set the bar high for the other bands of the day to hit. Later on at night, after the band had savored the sound of an uproarious auditorium clapping for them, the main songwriters of the band sat down with me in the courtyard of the Artmore hotel for an interview. Guitarist Peter Degenfeld-Schonburg and keyboardist Christopher Tarnow opened up about the concept of their album, how the band formed, working in the studio, getting close to an idea for the second album, and even about possible adaptations for the first. Melencolia Estatica has signed on with Temple of Torturous for the release of third album "Hel" this coming November. You can check out a track from the album below, and the following press release was issued about the band:
"Melencolia Estatica is the sole vision of one Climaxia, arguably the most ambitious woman in black metal. Handling guitar, bass, vocal orchestrations, and overall concept, Climaxia has made Melencolia Estatica one of Italy's premiere black metal bands this past decade, and now her third and latest Hel sees her vision growing bolder and more daring.
"Inspired by Fritz Lang's masterpiece Metropolis, Melencolia Estatica’s Hel is a cruel vision of reality where hope is nothing but a shivering dream, a short moment suffocated by the greyness of factories’ background. The repetitive ticking of the clock of modernity that consumes mankind, a golden age of slavery where spirit is just a number to be forgotten: Hel marks a further step on the path of Melencolia Estatica, a new dawn of musical decadence." Italy's Disarmonia Mundi has announced work has begun on a new album and follow-up to 2009's "The Isolation Game." The band comments:
"Right now we're demoing some tracks for what will be our 5th full-length album, but don't hold your breath, 'coz it will take a while to be released...
"This is the phase I probably like most, being creative and assembling something worth listening to out of nothing, it just takes a little mindset adjustment at the very beginning, but then the whole thing comes really smooth.
"As usual Ettore is providing tons of great material and some really cool vocal ideas as well, so I'm pretty confident on the new stuff, the only thing to worry right now is to find the best solutions for each new song and to have each track sound the best way possible, with the best verses, best choruses, melodies and so on... Needless to say we'll try our best and if we fail... hey, at least we tried, ahah!
"Obviously it's a lot of fun too, enjoying what you do is mandatory to keep the music fresh and inspired, if you don't like your own stuff nobody else will, right? Well well, it's all for now, we'll talk about the new stuff later, have a good weekend and take care of yourselves!"
German death metal act Burial Vault has issued the following announcement about splitting with bassist Amko Groeneveld:
"We have to make an important announcement: Amko is going to leave the band! Yesterday we played the last show with him because he is going to leave his hometown to move to Southern Germany. Due to this, he will no longer be able to take part in rehersals.
"We really want to thank him for an 'adventurous' time in which we met a lot of people and got to know each other better and better. He will forever be a part of Burial Vault and we are looking forward to have some icecold beers with him in the future!
"Upcoming shows are not affected by Amko's exit. We are going to play them with a session-bassist." More...
